The Jets need Brandon Marshall to find the end zone on Sunday.

By Glenn Naughthon

The New York Jets released their most extensive injury report of the season after practice today with wide receiver Brandon Marshall being the most noteworthy addition.  A foot injury that Marshall says he has been battling all year kept him out of today’s session.

Marshall headed the list of non-participants which included 11 others, ten of which were due to injury and the 11th being an excused Sheldon Richardson:

LB Bruce Carter (quadricep), T Ryan Clady (shoulder), TE Kellen Davis (hip), LB Darron Lee (ankle), C Nick Mangold (ankle), WR Brandon Marshall (foot), RB Bilal Powell (toe), T Brent Qvale (neck), DT Sheldon Richardson (not injury related), TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins (ankle), CB Buster Skrine (knee), DE Muhammad Wilkerson (ankle)

Those limited in practice were: S Antonio Allen (achilles), RB Matt Forte (knee), CB Darrelle Revis (ankle).

Right guard Brian Winters was the only player listed who was a full participant with a knee injury.

Jets got lucky last year. Battling a lot of injuries this year with many players playing hurt. Really hurts the young guys development like Lee & Jenkins. Young LBs need all the reps they can get. If you look at the Pats, it took 3 years before you started hearing about Collins & Hightower.

Teams are killing us attacking those short areas because these guys are still reacting & have no instincts yet. Of course we're getting killed over the top too. Here's something else to think about though regarding these 1st 7 games, we played a lot of sh*tty teams with sh*tty QBs last year. A lot of TDs on bombs this year were PERFECTLY placed balls, RIGHT ON THE WRs hands!

Last year, those same throws were just a little long, a little short, ect. Dalton + Green (Green was phenomenal in that game! Made numerous GREAT catches). TRod long TD over Revis was beautiful. Russell Wilson (enough said), @ KC? Smith is deadly throwing short & we can't stop a TE & Fitz gave field position all day (Defense played good enough to win) Big Ben? Murdered us underneath. @ Arizona (defense played good enough to win- bad D on the David Johnson run) no show for the offense.

Last years defensive stats were padded against inferior teams & inferior QBs. Dalton- TRod is playing pretty well- Wilson- Smith- Big Ben - Palmer- Flacco. Your defense is gonna get tested playing mature QBs who have had success in this league. Especially when you send rookies out there.

Cincy was the game we let get away. 3-4 running that gauntlet we all would be feeling better. Say what you will about Fitz or the D in that game, but Folk f*cked us in that game. 4 gimme points @ home. It is what it is.

Nick Mangold - C -  Jets

Jets C Nick Mangold was spotted wearing a walking boot Thursday.

Mangold is not going to practice Thursday, and it is highly unlikely he plays this week. Wesley Johnson took over at center after Mangold left against the Ravens.

Bilal Powell - RB -  Jets

The New York Post's Brian Costello reports Bilal Powell (toe) is "moving well" in Thursday's practice.

Powell is thought to be dealing with turf toe, so it is somewhat surprising he is back on the practice field Thursday. Either way, this practice gives him a good shot to play against the Browns. He is still not worth using with Matt Forte taking back over the lead role last week.

I've said it in other threads, mounting injuries and high salary indicate this will be Mangold's last year in a Jets uniform.

They re-signed C Kyle Friend to the PS (UDFA C from Temple, final TC cut) and Wesley Johnson has had to sub in and play in 2 games now where Mangold goes down for a fair amount of snaps.

O-line, along with the secondary AGAIN, will be TOP priorities heading into Spring '17

Austin Seferian-Jenkins (ankle) returned to practice Thursday.

Seferian-Jenkins has missed the last two games with an ankle injury. He will likely be limited, but this practice at least gives him a shot to play. He will not be worth streaming even in a great matchup with the Browns.

Here is the injury list so far.

Mangold is probably the best player on our O-line, but I must say W.Johnson has filled in rather admirably.

Carter is pretty much a backup, Lee is a rookie and the Jets have enough depth at LB with Jenkins, Harris, Henderson, Mauldin, Catapano, J.Stanford and the newly added
T.Jones.

 K.Davis is, well, K.Davis.

B.Skrine has had a rough go (even with is INT in the last game) this season. Giving one of the backups (Burris?) some reps and not having Skrine play on the outside may actually be beneficial for the pass defense.

But there ARE some injuries that concern me. The Jets really need B.Powell, R.Clady, and B.Marshall to play. Those are the critical players that, if unable to go, may really hurt the Jets chances of winning this game.

Note: Richardson is not injured- excused absence. And if Richardson, Williams, McLendon and Jenkins are all good to go, it doesn't hurt the Jets as much if Wilk misses another game.

P.S. The return of WR- Smith does not really fill the void if Marshall can't play. The return of Breno does not really fill the void if Clady can't play.

This is an issue that the Jets may be facing in the near future, they are not missing a dlineman they paid a massive contract too.

I think the run game was fine (maybe even a little better), but I think protection in the passing game got worse.

I agree. But it seemed like the pressure was coming from the edge. Splitting hairs I guess.

There is a communication issue and the Center normally calls the protection scheme. Also, the guards may have had to slide towards the center to help out, thus exposing the tackles more. Not sure, but it seemed to get worse when Mangold went out. Hopefully with a week of practice they will get better.

Jets center Nick Mangold (ankle) unlikely to play vs. Browns

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets center Nick Mangold, one of the NFL's most durable players, is battling a significant right-ankle sprain and is expected to sit out Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

Mangold, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, has missed only four games in 11 seasons.

"He's not running yet, he's walking," coach Todd Bowles said on Thursday. "As the days go by and he's not running yet, it doesn't look good. We'll hold out another day or two."

In a brief appearance in the locker room, Mangold, 32, was seen walking with a pronounced limp. He has been staying off his feet as much as possible, so much so that he hasn't even participated in the stretching period at practice.

The Jets are preparing Wes Johnson to make his second career start on Sunday.

"We've got a lot of confidence in Wes, but at the same time, some of the other players have to take ownership and leadership in this thing as well, so we can get everything communicated correctly," offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said.

The Jets (2-5) rely on Mangold on make their line calls and direct traffic. They're 1-3 when he's out of the lineup.

Mangold was injured in the first quarter last Sunday. He went down awkwardly when left tackle Ryan Clady rolled up the back of his leg. Mangold was taken immediately to the locker room and never returned to the game.

In other injury news, Bowles ruled out linebackers Darron Lee (ankle) and Bruce Carter (quadriceps) and right tackle Brent Qvale (neck). Lee, their first-round pick, will miss his second game in a row.

Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, dealing with residual soreness from offseason surgery to repair a fractured fibula, could miss his second straight game. Wilkerson, who returned to practice on a limited basis, said a tendon near the ankle is bothering him.

Jets DE Mo Wilkerson admitted his ankle injury, which sidelined him last week, is related to the surgery he needed last January to repair a fractured fibula. "It's a tendon by the ankle that's bothering me," he said. He returned to practice today, but his status is up in the air. He has only 1.5 sacks in six games. "It's not a one-man show, it's a team sport and we have a lot of games left to improve," he said.
