THE ILK
NEW YORK (WFAN) – Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz came out of nowhere last season to become a household name. Now he wants to be paid like one. But that doesn’t mean he’d consider stiff-arming his team with a training camp holdout. “Not at all,” Cruz said from Nike’s NFL uniform gala in Brooklyn. “That’s not even in my vocabulary. I don’t even know what it means.” Cruz, who earned a modest $405,000 in 2011, set a Giants franchise record with 1,536 receiving yards. He’s slated to make $540,000 in base salary next season. The 25-year-old Super Bowl champion told ProFootballTalk.com in February that he deserves “to be paid more money at this point.” On Tuesday, Cruz insisted that he’s “not frustrated at all.” “When I was young, it wasn’t about the money,” he said. “It wasn’t about the fame and fortune. It was just going out there and playing football. Regardless of how short-term this career can be, I just want to go out there and play. “All of that stuff will take care of itself.” Cruz said that if he remains positive, “good things will come.” They certainly have already for the undrafted fan favorite. “You just gotta remain humble and remain yourself and understand that all the good things are going to come to you in time,” he said. “So you just have to keep doing what you’re doing” Should Big Blue show Cruz the money? Il Mostro
He's smart -- he has absolutely zero leverage so playing nice probably increases the chances of the team doing the right thing.
