NFL Draft prospect announces he's gay: Michael Sam, OLB/DE Missouri

I mean, I get it. Sam changes the whole dynamic of the locker-room. I wouldn't want one of my teammates meat-gazing me when I'm busy jerking off the long-snapper either.

It's like when my company hired an oriental and we all had to make a conscious effort not to make jokes about chinamen.

In all seriousness, ignorance is bliss. Here's my thing- we all know gay jokes go on in the locker room...we make a ton of them here. The way Sam goes about telling someone hey that isnt cool will be a big part of how he becomes just one of the guys. When you tell someone to stop, they generally will stop.

True. The guy's been in a football locker room in the south for as long as he's been alive, I doubt this will be the first time he's heard a gay joke or had to deal with it.  Just like any other issues in a locker-room, it'll only happen if another player is directing the disrespect directly at him.

So long as he comes to work every day and performs on the field, this will be a non-issue for 90% of the team by the middle of training camp.  There's always gonna be some people who have a problem with it, but that's life.

We all have our crosses to bear. It just sounds comical when you articulate what Vilma and Thomas are trying to say out loud: "The biggest problem currently in my life is that I'll have to think twice about the racially or sexually insensitive jokes that I make and who I can parade my c*ck around too."

Dude, you laugh but I had a guy in my office spin that into an attack on our personal freedoms yesterday. Now the bigots are the victims.

I imagine if you found the one subject he was sensitive to, be it religion, country or nationality and started teeing off on him for it, he'd probably be the first to fight you for it, while not at all grasping the hypocrisy.

just to review:

He doesn't look like he can stand up and cover (no 3-4's)

He's undersized for a 4-3 DE (6'2" 260) . Is he a 3rd down specialist? What is his role?

He's real old for a prospect (24)

all this off the field stuff aside, Michael Sam is overrated as a prospect.  If he comes out and runs a 4.5 at Indy we can revisit this but I don't think this guy was ever really on track to be a third rounder.

Why not? He'll be remembered as doing something progressive and helping usher change in.

Yes, but the first person who "blazes the trail" always has it the roughest.  He's not going to have to deal with stuff even a small fraction of what, say, Jackie Robinson faced, but he's still going to have tough moments for the entire length of his career.  He'll have a few bigoted teammates who won't be cool with it.  He'll have some unruly fans calling him a fag.  And already he's reportedly hurting his draft stock.

If he wasn't confident that this would get leaked out eventually, he wouldn't be doing it.  The only reason he is is because he wants to be the first to break the story.

He'll get Villian the Foe questioning his desires.

And like Jackie Robinson, but too a lesser extent, he'll be remembered for more then what he accomplished on the field.

Most people tend to care more about day in and out quality of life vs. their place in history u effin cynic. This doesn't help his draft stock or make him more money.

Listen to Hess on this.  Do you really expect a 24-year old to care about his place in the context of history?  Even Jackie Robinson just wanted to play ball, and do so at the highest level.  He didn't care much about breaking the color barrier at the time.

Most people never train ghard enough or practice enough to even make it to the pros. What most people do is irrelevant. I also think he's likely to make MORE money

And what is cynical about thinking about this? You'd have to be a fool to think he didn't consider all these things and likely decided to do it based on a # of factors. There usually isn't 1 reason people do anything

Who knows... People may even rally around him... Defend him... Life lessons could be learned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure his factors were more along the lines of, my teammates already know, most teams already know, this will eventually come out, rather it on my own terms, before the draft heats up, get it out of the way now, I'm proud of what I am, I have no reason to hide what I am.

Conspiracy? You twit. Who cares why he did it. I'm saying ti was a multi-factorial decision that likely included pros/cons that extended beyond what team drafts him

Third, probably not. But a week ago I'd have bet even money on his being in line for no worse than a fifth-round contract in the neighborhood of 2.5M/4, 200K signing bonus, and I wouldn't touch it at 5:2 against now.

That's bullsh*t. And yes, to answer your question supra, it is indeed necessarily cynical to suggest that this was a decision borne out of utility. Not to mention just plain painfully naive.

I suggested it was a consideration, as I said earlier, it's naive to assume anything less

One intriguing subplot in the story of Michael Sam, the former Missouri standout who may become the first openly gay NFL player, is how and if marketers and endorsers will pursue the 24-year-old.

Darren Rovell of ESPN spoke to several marketing experts as well as Sam's agents. The interest in Sam is likely to be intense, as the LGBT community is a valuable and untapped demographic for advertisers and companies over the last few years have become more comfortable with openly gay spokespeople.

"We told him that there is going to be a storm of people and companies that are going to want to get a piece," Joe Barkett, whose firm Empire Athletes represents Sam, told Rovell. "He has a willingness to do deals, but that's obviously not what drove this."

Barkett told Rovell that Sam will likely sign a shoe and apparel deal and perhaps a second deal in the coming weeks. After that he'll focus on preparing for the NFL Combine and his pro day.

As Rovell suggests, it appears Nike could have the inside track on signing Sam. Not only does Nike outfit two of the more high profile athletes to come out over the past year -- Jason Collins and Brittney Griner -- it has a strong partnership with the LGBT Sports Coalition, which works to end discrimination of sexual orientation in sports.

Ultimately, experts agreed, Sam's on-field performance will determine how many and what types of endorsement offers he'll receive.

"It's amazing and courageous what he's done, but I don't think it's necessarily going to shoot him to marketing stardom," Ryan Williams, director of marketing for Athletes First, told Rovell. "He'll get more speaking opportunities and maybe an eventual book deal, but the real money will most likely come only if he plays well on the field."

Why are we forced to act like this kid did not consider the possibilities?  He should, but I'm pretty sure that he did.  He has a publicist, yet I am painfully naive.

On Saturday night, over Chinese food at the home of his publicist, Howard Bragman, Sam was joined by an exclusive group
