NFL Draft prospect announces he's gay: Michael Sam, OLB/DE Missouri

Watching NFL Network, some dork was interviewing Casserly.

Casserly was all business, and basically said it's a non-issue and that he's had gay players before. No big deal.

The dork interviewing, and the way he was pushing the agenda that there just HAS to be controversy, was appalling. The only issue teams have to consider in drafting Sam is how to deal with the media horde that will come with him. The issues won't be in teh locker room. They will be in the press, where they may not BE anti-gay, but they sure as sh*t are going to push that agenda.

It'll be like Tebow.

Lets keep asking until we get the answer we're looking for is what will happen.

I haven't been to church in twenty years. Does anyone know if they're still going hard with the "God thinks gays are icky" message?

I think the Bible thumpers down south are, and the Catholics, and... well, in short: yes.

I go to a church in the south.  We welcome gay people at mine.  I know I suck and have issues that faith can help me with.  Why would I waste a single moment hating on a gay person?  It doesn't matter who's "right" on all this; if I'm not loving my neighbor I'm in the wrong.  Period.

Way different because Sam does not suck at football. This is a "circus" situation that would be welcomed.

Maybe so. I've come to know many devout Catholics through my in-laws, including some nuns and deacons. They're more liberal-minded than you think.

The priests are the ones that are tight-assed (pun intended).

That's great to hear... it's just not a reflection of the majority. Baby steps though... maybe in good time. Who knows. Bigots are like cockroaches, they outlast everything else. Amazingly... there always seems to be a never-ending supply of them.

Cool.

We all suck, and those of us that are worth a spit find ways to be better - whether it's through church or wearing peoples skin as costume, like me.

Church doctrine is also in the midst of a really big swing in this particular area.

I'm not sure we know truly what the majority thinks... We certainly know what the news allows us to. Hopefully the news, like it does in most cases, is glorifying a vocal minority.

Been to church in many areas of the country including the south and many denominations from pentecostal to very liberal north eastern churches and never not once have i ever heard a single thing said about homosexuality.

Depends where. There has been a distinct spike since the late 2000s and it's unlikely that trends back downward in the States. In a lot of the rest of the world, that's a different story. Russia is certainly at the forefront right now in that regard, but what's happening in parts of Africa and the Middle East is nothing short of horrific. 'Cause hey, choices are punishable.

Does anyone else find this ironic...the priests are the ones against being gay, yet they're they ones who molest their choir boys.  It's one of the reasons why I don't follow any religion.

I'm from NY. I've lived in the South, and in the Midwest, and now in Boston. I work with a lot of west coast companies. The majority lives in between the coasts, and I have a pretty good idea of how they thing. It may be a generalization, but I'd wager it's true at least 51% of the time.

they were talking about this on msnbc last night and kept saying over and over that sam is a "top prospect" and projected to be a "top draft pick." they are setting up the narrative that it is all bigotry if he doesn't go in first two rounds. facts are that he has always been projected rd 4/5 because he is a tweener who is too small to be a three down lineman and not mobile enough to drop into coverage on pass downs. he is a pass rush specialist. but most people will hear "expected to be a top draft pick" for the next three months to set up the faux outrage when he gets selected where his skill dictates. what should be a positive story about one man's struggle against adversity will be coopted and used to beat the victim drum. shouldn't be surprised.

I deleted my twitter a few weeks back because of this type of stuff. The negativity it breeds is astounding. These folks thrive off of controversy/witch-hunts.

everything is political nowadays--science, sports, everything. i am glad politics is not allowed here--go on any news site that allows reader comments and without fail within 5 posts it turns into a flame war about how it is obama/bush/hillary/whomever's fault. it's exhausting!

television is showbiz and they are competing for eyeballs. if people just wanted the facts C-Span would be the top rated network. people like to be entertained, not informed for the most part.

ESPN has been reporting Sam being projected as a 3-4 rounder. That's probably accurate based on the players he's been compared favorably to (Cliff Avril, Robert Mathis) and where they went in the draft.

The distressing part is that some draft site had him projected in the mid-90s overall on Saturday and dropped him to 160th after the announcement.

If the kid has an OK combine it could drop him out of the draft entirely where for others it may not affect their standing. If Sam has a monster combine performance, things will get interesting.

undoubtedly the non-sports media will report that it is bigotry because he was SEC defensive player of the year. to the uninitiated that sounds like he should be a first rounder.

Fine, then call them commentary or editorial channels. Not news

Of course they will but only an idiot goes to MSNBC or Fox News for their sports news. Ever see the guys on Morning Joe talk sports? It's painful. I feel like jumping through the screen and slapping them all in the face while loudly correcting them.

Everything is about ratings. It makes it more interesting to the casual observer if Michael Sam is a "star."

I know the NFL is thrilled. I'm betting they get record ratings for day 2 of the draft because of this.

MSNBC is saying these things because they know a specific audience will be tuning in to see if they say them. Aside from designing material specifically for those that subscribe to whichever ideological framework that a channel provides, they also know that another demographic is going to tune in; and that's people who tune in for the sole reason of hearing what they are going to say so they can go complain about it elsewhere on the internet, hence promoting the station. Ever notice how the more that Jon Stewart makes fun of Fox, the more their ratings go up? Do you think that Fox really cares at all how that happens?

To be fair, he is in some pretty good company there. Claiborne, Dorsey, Willis, Jarvis Jones, Peterson, Eric Berry.  The last time one went out of the top 20 was DeMeco Ryans who was the first pick in the 2nd.  In fact, he is like the only one in the past 10 years to go out of the top 17.  You have to go all the way back to Chad Lavalais in 2003/2004 who went in the 5th.  I wonder about the reasoning behind coming out.  Was he just making an honorable statement?  Trying to diffuse rumors that were sure to swirl during the combine? Trying to use it for some other reason?
