Ray Rice was indicted Thursday for physically assaulting his fiancée, Janay Palmer, in an Atlantic City Casino on Feb. 15, according to an announcement by acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain.

Rice was indicted by an Atlantic County grand jury for one count of aggravated assault "for attempting to cause significant bodily injury, and/or purposely or knowingly causing such injury, and/or recklessly causing such injury under extreme indifference to the value of human life."

Aggravated assault is a third-degree crime and carries a potential penalty of 3-5 years imprisonment.

The Ravens issued a statement after the indictment was announced, saying, “This is part of the due process for Ray. We know there is more to Ray Rice than this one incident."

Rice and Palmer were charged with simple assault, a disorderly persons offense, after Atlantic City police responded to the Revel Casino at 2:52 a.m. on Feb. 15 to investigate an altercation involving the couple. Both were released on summons complaints and the case was referred to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office for review.

The assault took place in the hotel elevator, according to the indictment announcement. According to the complaint filed by an Atlantic City Police officer, Rice knocked Palmer unconscious by striking her with his hand. Video of Rice dragging Palmer out of an elevator in the casino surfaced in the days after the arrest and it has been reported that police have "video evidence of the blow."

The simple assault complaint against Palmer was administratively dismissed.

The indictment is an accusation and not proof of guilt.

Rice getting married

On Thursday, Ravens running back Ray Rice was indicted for aggravated assault of his fiancee. On Friday, he married her.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Janay Palmer and Rice exchanged vows last night, in a ceremony that had been scheduled for weeks.

The conscious coupling likely will insulate Palmer from having to testify against the man who allegedly rendered her unconscious. But since the incident happened in a casino, chances are that the only evidence needed will be the videotape of the alleged punch that knocked her out.

The video reportedly exists, and it will go a long way toward proving beyond a reasonable doubt that assault was committed, regardless of whether Palmer takes the stand.

Rice faces three to five years in prison on the felony charge. In the wake of his indictment, the Ravens have expressed support for the veteran running back.

a reality show can't be far behind......

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and Janay Palmer were married Friday, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The marriage came one day after Rice was indicted by a grand jury on third-degree aggravated assault for allegedly striking Palmer unconscious.

The ceremony had been planned for a couple of weeks, according to sources.

Rice was arrested and charged with simple assault-domestic violence on Feb. 15 following a physical altercation with his then-fiancée at the Revel Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J.

Running back Ray Rice was indicted Thursday for third-degree aggravated assault tied to an altercation with his fiancée last month at an Atlantic City casino.

Palmer also was charged with simple assault.

I am not a law student, so I am not totally sure of the legal ramifications of all of this. I do, however, believe that she does not have to testify against him if this goes to trial. It also may increase the likelihood that a plea deal is worked out now, which is probably is Rice's best play right now.

Crimes committed before the marriage generally do not fall into this category.  If the court wants to push it, she would be held in contempt for refusing to testify.  Of course, none of this is going to happen to K.O. Ray and Glass Jaw Mrs. Ray.
