Jets file tampering charges against the Patriots

Per the league rules both Woody & Kraft are guilty.  I'm sure both will be fined this year, and they'll tweak the reg next offseason, making this sort of thing permissible.  Usually how the NFL works.

Kraft was commenting on the failed negotiations with Revis. It isn't tampering. There is no equivalency between commenting on a failed negotiation, and publicly declaring you want another player under contract (after being warned about tampering earlier that year,) then going after him through his agent and floating your want for him to media sources while he is still on another team

The Jets tampered with the Patriots negotiations. They're going to give up a draft pick for it.

You keep saying this but won't back it up with a little cash.  Is that because your 13 and have no $$?

Or is it because you know your wrong?

Or is it because your on welfare and you will lose your benefits if anyone knows you have any money stashed?

Go get a job so you have less time to troll other teams sites.

The funny thing is, during the "legal tampering" period, half the league clearly violated the tampering rules by offering contracts, and coming to agreements. While players were still under contract.  Which is a clear violation of the rules.

if the league starts taking draft picks for this, there won't be a draft this year.

If I was Revis, I would of taken the franchise quarterback money too.

Revis had a relationship with Rex Ryan. That was the only possible reason he might have had to go back to a team that doesn't win anything. Incase you forgot, you fired Rex, and Rex signed with the Bills. It's all moot anyway, because he's going to remain a Patriot, but if he was going to go somewhere else based on former loyalties, it would now be Buffalo, not the Jets.

We understand that he's a great player. The fan in me wishes he were still with us.

Why? This is entertainment. Nothing more or less. I have a real life/job/wife/kids, this type of stuff is fun. Not sure why some of you take this stuff so seriously.

Some people find Survivor, Dancing with the Stars, the WWE and the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills entertaining as well.

Having a modicum of taste is not a sin, mate.

I like football, not soap operas.

Yes, the day he released. The Patriots weren't floating to his agent and through the media that they wanted him, and Revis took less money to play here. One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong.

You know you were tampering with Revis, so why even bother denying it or trying to find some moral equivalency in past tense comments by Kraft?

Revis was never going to sign a long term deal with the Patriots because he knew you were going to give him franchise quarterback money while he was still under contract with the Patriots. You know you're guilty, but you're trying to play this silly game to pretend otherwise.

The hilarious irony here is that this forum had two threads always going at the same time for the last 2 months.

1. The Jets are going to sign Revis, sources say!

2. Patriots filing tampering charges! How ridiculous!

How could the Jets have tampered with Revis before his release when there was an NFL investigator watching their every move for 3 straight days leading up to his release?

I'll say it a third time. $50 to Wounded Warrior. You're this confident, right? It's a good cause. Stop being a bitch about it.

Petty begets petty.

Be nice when the petty is over and done with, with the predictable "no action" outcomes.

The question will be, if there is no action, would that have still been the outcome if we only played defense on this?

What if the decision comes after a "You're both being ridiculous now. No one gets anything," (or something like that).

If so, this may have saved a draft pick.

Again, why on Earth do you think Revis would have ANY interest in signing with the Jets? NOT THAT HE'S EVEN A FREE AGENT, but why? "The fans?" LOL Revis had a relationship with Rex Ryan. That was the only possible reason he might have had to go back to a team that doesn't win anything. Incase you forgot, you fired Rex, and Rex signed with the Bills. Because the Jets will give him franchise-quarterback money in order to get him back to sell tickets

I sure hope thats not the case.

I hope the NFL is not so pants-on-head foolish to take either claim as more then petty rival jabbing, tbh.

I'm not against Woody filing the claim, weak tho it is.  It's smart, get jabbed, jab back.

It's just so silly is all.

But you;re rght, if the NFL IS that daft, and this "saves us a draft pick", that's great.  Just should never have been that way (us potentially losing a pick) in the first place.

Money bets with internet strangers isn't really my thing. For all I know you're a Canadian transgender sitting in a Guatemalan internet cafe.

Even if true, what does that have to do with accepting a bet for charity?

Also, that's still not worse than being a bandwagon Pats fan that has never set foot in New England.

Me thinks you're a cowardly pooooooosy that won't put his money where his gunt is.

I seriously cant believe what Im reading here.  The Jets are a petty pathetic organization with this ridiculous move.

Was the Patriots initial complaint stupid? Yes. But at least that one was before Revis was signed to a new deal.  Kraft talking about Revis after his new deal is a completely different animal.  Its all stupid and this just make the Jets look even more pathetic to the NFL.

Stop being homers.  You're making us look like morons.

It wasn't a petty move by them.  It was a very smart move on the Jets part.  It prevents the league from even swapping 7th round picks between the teams because they can't punish the Jets and not punish the Patriots for the same crime, even if it was a little worse from the Jets end because although extremely unlikely, it could have had an extremely minute effect on their negotiations.    It basically will force the league into telling both teams, "Okay, enough of this.  Just play football.".

Trolling is easy until someone pulls your card.

This is hard for me too. I was hoping to begin a streak of turning dumb sh*t people say into WW donations. Now it's ending at 1.

Pathetic?   :rl:  screw you.  Im embarrassed by this team.  Im embarrassed by the fans supporting this petty garbage.

And the whole thing is stupid.  I pointed out the major difference between Krafts comments and the Jets comments.  Major difference even if both may be "tampering"  But hey, enjoy this all you want because obviously the Jets act like the little babies JN fans are.

Nobody is forcing you to root for them, the Giants could use a couple of know-it-all fans.

What is embarrassing is your lack of understanding on the intent of the Jets' tampering charges, nothing to do with the tampering that did actually happen, but to send a message to the league and to the Pats that two can play their game...

I'm sure you were one of the fans outraged at the tampering charges the Pats filed against the Jets, and wanted to throw Woody off of a building for putting the team in that position, of course, the Pats were genius' for calling the Jets out, nothing petty there, right?

JetNation article nails the effect of the Jets response to the spectacle, and regardless of the pathetic and ignorant spinning you're trying to launch against the Jets, it most definitely WAS a smart move by the team...

Say what you will about New York Jets owner Woody Johnson during his tenure at the top of the Jets food chain, but there is no denying that this offseason has been one of his best.  Reports of the Jets filing tampering charges against the rival New England Patriots, while petty on the surface, is actually a very wise play by the owner.

As many know by now, this all started at an end-of-season press conference in which Johnson was peppered with questions regarding the Jets’ handling of then-former Jet Darrelle Revis and the decision to trade him away two years earlier.  Following some remarks surrounding the circumstances under which Revis was dealt, Johnson committed a big no-no as far as the NFL is concerned when he wrapped things up by saying he’d “love for Darrelle to come back”.

Expressing the desire to secure the services of a player who is currently under contract with another NFL team is strictly forbidden, which is why Johnson chose to call Patriots owner Robert Kraft to offer an apology within hours of the faux pas.  With Revis still under contract in New England at the time of the comments, the Patriots had exclusive negotiating rights which could have allowed Kraft to speak privately with Johnson on the matter and quietly move on.  Instead, Kraft chose an alternate route.

Almost immediately, the Patriots publicly accused the Jets owner of tampering as head coach Bill Belichick went on the offensive, telling radio station WEEI that he expected the league to “look in to those comments”.  Tampering charges were officially filed in the days that followed.

As we know by now, Darrelle Revis did what Darrelle Revis was always going to do.  He tested free agency and signed with the highest bidder.  Much to the chagrin of Kraft and the Patriots, that turned out to be the Jets.

Given their ample salary cap space (over $50 million at the time) and dire need to upgrade one of the league’s worst secondaries, nobody needed to hear Woody Johnson pay Darrelle Revis a compliment to understand that the Jets planned to pursue the player they selected with the 14th overall pick in the 2007 draft.

With tampering charges against gang green filed at the league office, an investigation took place at the Jets facilities just days before Revis signed on the dotted line and the outcome is still pending.

In all reality the Jets were likely at risk of losing what would be no more than a late round draft pick.  While many Patriots fans, known for their refusal to tolerate any rules violations by any NFL player, coach, team or owner hoped to see the league award the Pats an early round selection from the Jets, that fallacy would break new ground regarding tampering penalties.

For example, we saw the Detroit Lions lose a seventh-round selection as well as a swap of fourth round picks with the Kansas City Chiefs after contacting a Chiefs player who was under contract in hopes of convincing him to leave Kansas City for Detroit.  With that being the case, taking anything more than a seventh round selection from the Jets would be absurd as Johnson’s comments don’t amount to anything close to what was a calculated effort to actively pursue a player via direct contact with said player or his agent while under contract.  A double standard of that magnitude would be difficult to pass off, even for somebody as well versed on the subject as Goodell.

Even still, being stripped of a draft pick, no matter what round it may fall in, would be a stain on the organization as  a “guilty” verdict that would imply some degree of cheating or circumventing of the rules.

With that being the case, Johnson has seized an opportunity with which he’s been presented.  Following some inappropriate remarks of his own in which Kraft made it known that he wished that Revis, who is now under contract with the Jets, was still a New England Patriot, the Jets chose to act.  Even as Kraft’s remarks were just as harmless as the ones Johnson made just few months ago, Johnson and the Jets had reason to hit back with the same charges for multiple reasons.

Some fans may recall the long-forgotten “deflategate” controversy during super bowl week in which the Patriots were accused of illegally under-inflating footballs.  In the midst what became a national headline-grabbing story, the relationship between Roger Goodell and Robert Kraft was put under the microscope as players and fans alike were put off by the league’s failure to quickly investigate the matter, and Kraft’s demands of an apology from the league for questioning the integrity of his squeaky-clean organization.

Now, thanks to Johnson and the Jets, the Goodell/Kraft relationship will once again be put in the spotlight and tested unlike any time before.  Faced simultaneously with identical rules violations, the commissioner will be forced to hold both teams accountable for the same infractions.

Had Johnson remained mum following Kraft’s comments, he would have run the risk of appearing complacent while putting his team in a position to be penalized for a few words that in the grand scheme of things, amounted to nothing.

Instead, the charges filed by the Jets will almost certainly mean Goodell throwing a pair of flags for offsetting penalties and what should amount to a small fine.  The charges could also save the Jets a draft pick, but more importantly it exposes the absurdity of the charges that were filed to begin with.
