Observations On the Browns Game

- What's a tight end? It appears we actually don't need one.

- Owusu > Kerley - and I think Kerley's pretty good.  though we're all just waiting for the Owusu retirement concussion

- Mo is an ELITE run stopper.  He and Snacks are dominant run stoppers.  He should get a little more $ than Cam Jordan and nowhere near Watt/Suh/Dareus.

- Leonard "Big Cat" Williams was solid in his debut.  He's no Sheldon right now and he shouldn't be expected to be.

- We have no awesome blitzers

- Our LBers are a solid and unspectacular bunch.

- Calvin Pryor had a legit breakout game.  This is exactly what we hoped for when we took him in the first round.  He's got a big target on him in pass coverage and had the Tight End caught that first pass over the top on him it may have been a different game.  Pryor led the team in tackles and in most of them he prevented big plays - plus he saved a TD and changed the game with the McCown hit.

- Fitzy = game manager.  Finally.

- Marshall's the best wide receiver we've had since Keyshawn, maybe since Walker/Toon

- Everyone's surprisingly healthy, shocker.

STILL being the word.  All the draft picks to the D-Line  and what do we have?  Coples, Mo, Richardson all 1st rounders.

Then Williams and no pass rush on Cleveland?  It was this way all pre season.

If we STILL have no pass rush next week then it will be impossible to dismiss.

Cleveland's Line is one of the best in the league.

This is why Richardson is so important to this team. He truly is the most dominate player on the line and it shows especially with him absent from there.

We just have 3 more games and luckily a bye week to get him integrated into the line up.

and then we're supposed to spend $100 million extending Wilk when we already have Coples, Richardson, and Williams.

By "still have no pass rush" you guys mean top 10 in sacks in the NFL, right?  Cause they are 7th in 2015.  They were 6th in 2014, and 13th in 2013.

A Dominator is a dominant player that dominates.  It is getting like there/their/they're.

by no pass rush we mean we couldn't get close to Manziel or Mccown on Sunday unless they were running

Mccown had an open lane for a td and if he was semi decent he wouldn't have fumbled and Manziel always runs for yardage

Right, but there were several times when they ran because they were pressured....Williams actually had Manziel around the ankles on one run but he broke away.  With a less mobile QB, the sack numbers would have been there IMO.

well..I thought I would get hammered for my comments but it seems I agree with you all and visa versa.  I was somewhat surprised by the way manziel, seemingly each time was able to run past our D-line man when we had him out of the pocket.  If we can get pressure on a QB, we are gonna be good.

Yep, they hardly touched them.  Except for the three sacks which are tied for 7th in the NFL.  2 strip sacks and you guys are complaining about the rush.  The only thing this tells me is that there is an unrealistic expectation for pass rush.  I think they tempered the rush against Manziel to keep him from getting outside, but they were fine.

For whatever reason this coaching staff does not like Kerley.  Don't know if it's personal, don't like his skill set - or I think what's most likely is they don't like his size.

I think they dont like his speed.  The guys they worked in his spot in camp were Devin Smith, Owusu, and Enunwa...  Devin Smith ran a 4.42 at the combine, Enunwa ran a 4.40, and Owusu ran a 4.31...Jeremy Kerley ran a 4.56.  I think the Jets want a #3 to get down the field and loosen coverage on Decker and Marshall...Kerley doesnt add that dimension to the team...

We got some sacks.  And with Manziel, you try to keep him in the pocket.  I thought the pass rush was okay.

Well, Cleveland does have Joe Thomas and Alex Mack (finally) on the oline...they were the 13th best oline at protecting the passer last year, and that was without Alex Mack and total idiots at QB.  Well, they still have the total idiots at QB, but they also have Mack back and Cameron Irvin for depth (as we saw him check in at RG)...We just played one of the better olines in the NFL (top 15 anyway) and I didnt see them run the ball and we seemed to make plays on the QB...this is just Jets fans being over critical.

Take the win and move on.  Its tough enough to get wins in the NFL as is without b!tching about style points.  You think the Cowboys or Falcons care today about style points or they would have preferred to coast in with a 31-10 win like we did?

I think some fans need to...

Could very well be the case with Kerley. This staff may want the burner in the slot ala Dedric Ward and Santana Moss when he was a rookie and we had Coles and Chrebet outside instead of a possession/shifty slot guy like Cotchery or Kerley.

I like Owusa (sp?) But would still like to see Kerley get some snaps in the slot. I really thought he would be a good fit inside in this offense, complimenting Marshall and Decker very well. We'll see as the season progresses which way they go.

it is hard to generate a real pass rush with no pass rushers on the team. mo, coples, Williams, & Richardson are all players from the same mold. pocket pushing, run stuffers. basically, all are defensive tackles. occasionally, you will see 1 bust thru for a sack in the backfield, but its not the norm. the only pass rushers on the team are mauldin and reilly. and who knows how they will turn out

Santana Moss is the definition of a shifty slot guy.  I think that Kerley will start seeing some snaps.  If he doesn't they should get someone else to return punts and save the roster spot.

I also don't think Enunwa is that fast.  It's probably Jetman, maybe somebody else posted a youtube claiming 4.40, but I haven't seen it listed faster than 4.45 and he doesn't have much wiggle. The idea that he is faster than Smith seems farfetched to me.  It will be interesting to see what direction they go in, but most likely it will just end up being determined by injuries.

Yes I agree about Moss, especially after he had a few years under his belt in the NFL and expanded on his route tree......but for my post I was specifically talking about his rookie season when he played the slot and did run alot of go and corner routes when we still had Chrebet and Coles on the outside.

Kerley is not every coaches' type player. He is a reluctant practicer tha has the ability to find football speed and play well on Sundays. Amaro is another like that I think and neither are Bowles types guys from my initial impressions of him.

40 times are not game speed

Smith:

Strengths

Smooth speed merchant with instant gas off the line. Has outstanding body composure and an effortless stride. Electrifying foot quickness.

Game-breaking speed

with necessary feel of a downfield receiver. Tracks the throw over his shoulder and never breaks stride in the chase. Averaged 28.2 yards per catch and 54.5 percent of his catches were for 25-plus yards in 2014. Used outside and from slot. Must be matched by

speed

on defense or with safety over the top. Uses shoulder dip from inside release to avoid being redirected by slot corner.

Speed

creates uncontested targets for him underneath. Can snap off dig routes and open immediately.

Good luck giving chase

to Smith on a crosser or

speed-out

in the red zone. Might have been the best gunner in college football.

Weaknesses

Lacks natural, soft hands. Will double catch and corral throws into body. Tries to catch, turn and run before securing the throw. Shows a lack of patience in his routes. Game too heavily reliant upon speed. Must learn to be effective when deep ball is restricted by defense. Thin hips and frame. Play strength is below average. Can be frustrated by physical corners. Gets jostled and distracted when bodied hard down the field. Desire lacking as run blocker. Often taken off field and replaced when Buckeyes wanted to run out of "11" personnel.

Bottom Line

Smith isn't just combine-fast, he's game-fast and he would have had more than 12 touchdown catches during the 2014 season if he didn't have to slow down and wait on throws so often. Smith has the feet and hips to become much more than a deep-ball specialist and should be able to step right into a gunner spot on special teams. He still needs to learn his craft and improve his hands, but he has rare speed to score from anywhere on the field.

Owusu:

Weaknesses

There is some concern around Owusu's concussions, which kept him out for the better part of his senior season. Chris will have to show NFL teams he has recovered from the repeated blows and can return a strong player. His greatest value is as a returner, where he will get the job done but could struggle at the next level to be highly effective as he has only above-average speed and will have a tougher time taking it the distance against the pros.

Enunwa

Weaknesses

Lacks elite top-end speed to separate vertically
