4 first round picks, amazing draft.

The 2000 NFL Draft saw the Jets with an NFL-record four picks in the first round. The Jets used their first two selections on defensive players, taking defensive end Shaun Ellis out of Tennessee and defensive end John Abraham out of South Carolina with the 12th and 13th overall picks.

Ellis made 156 starts in his 11 seasons with the Jets, recording 72.5 sacks (second-highest total in team history) and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection (2003 and 2009). Abraham earned three Pro Bowl selections (2001, 2002, 2004) and one All-Pro selection (2001) in his six seasons as a Jet, totaling 53.5 sacks over that span.

With the 18th pick of the first round, the Jets selected quarterback Chad Pennington out of Marshall. Pennington went on to post the highest quarterback rating for any Jets quarterback (88.9) during his eight seasons behind center. Pennington started 61 games (69 total) with the Jets, going 32-29 while throwing for 82 touchdowns and over 13,700 yards.

Pennington’s best season came in 2002, when he led the Jets to an 8-4 record in his 12 starts, helping the Jets win just their second division title in franchise history. With their fourth and final pick in the first round, the Jets selected tight end Anthony Becht out of West Virginia. Becht started 72 games in his five seasons as a Jet, recording 133 catches and 17 touchdowns.

Florida State wide receiver Laveranues Coles was the Jets 78th overall pick in the 3rd round. Coles had two tours of duty with the Jets, combining for 459 receptions and 37 touchdowns in his seven seasons. Coles’ 1,254 receiving yards in 2002 ranks as the fourth highest in franchise history.

Chad was terrible,  Becht was bad.  Abraham and Ellis were the only saving grace.  anytime Chad dropped back after the Raiders playoff game I was just waiting for the pick six.  Most overrated QB the Jets ever had.

You sir are a scholar and a gentleman

Having 4 picks in the 1st round tends to help a team.  :P  Fortunately, at that time, they used the picks well....balanced approach between O and D, focusing on premium positions like QB and edge rushers, etc.  It set the Jets up well for several more years with Mawae and Curtis Martin still here.  Playoffs under both Herm and Mangini with that group.

Just for giggles imagine that the Jets had the 12, 13, 18 and 27th picks in Round 1 this year as they did back in 2000.

That could be an OT like Becton or Josh Adams, a WR like Lamb or Ruggs, an Edge guy or CB like  Epenesa or Kristian Fulton and maybe a RB like D'Andre Swift or another WR like Higgins or Jefferson.

Sheeezus....imagine starting this Draft with Becton, Lamb, Epenesa and Tee Higgins......and STILL having 6 more rounds!

What makes Parcells’ 2000 draft so amazing is that the 2000 NFL Draft was a massive parade of busts. Courtney Brown was the first pick of that draft. Baltimore got Jamal Lewis and Seattle picked Shaun Alexander, but otherwise most teams got fleeced.

Bears drafted a HOF LB but yes generally a mediocre first round

Parcells turned a prime Keyshawn into John Abraham

time for the current GM to turn Jamal Adams into Jerry Jeudy or Ceedee Lamb

Phil as much as you and Mr. Shane may not like the guy.  He is the only commodity this team has at the moment.  He is bigger than Sam.  He is going no where at the moment.

A commodity at peak value which needs to be cashed in ASAP

Mr Shane.  I know he is the biggest bargaining chip.  Guess what,  He will not go anywhere for the fact he is also the teams best recruiter.  I respect your opinion,  but its a business.  Jamal will be on the Jets for the duration of his rookie contract.  You have 2 more years of this.

Not going to happen.  He is here and the mouthpiece of the team from the players side.  He loves the limelight and most do not want to see him go.  Me included.. So the people that want him gone are the minority.   If he is traded than Joe D got a monster deal to move him.   So it should help the team as a whole thats how big the deal needs to be.

If he was on another team and that team wanted to trade him to the Jets, what would you trade, as GM of the Jets, for Jamal Adams?

Good question...that's why Adams isn't going anywhere. Honestly, who other than crazy azz Jerry Jones is trading a 1st & 3rd for Jamal Adams?

That trade opportunity is long past & will not happen again. A #1 will be the offer & that's it, so you have to say to yourself do I want to SWAP positions & you better get it right. You'd have 11 & 17, and you better not miss. But, if that 17 ended up being a stud WR or Edge Rusher? Totally worth it. We almost got to the Super Bowl with Jim Leonard at Safety.
