Joe Douglas is a moron, but even a broke clock is right twice a day

Joe Douglas is the kind of guy who stretches his budget thin to buy a car with a five-year loan. He diligently makes payments, but three years in, gets lured by the promise of a lower monthly payment. So, he refinances, tacking on another five years to the loan. After several years, Joe's cruising in a beat-up Toyota Corolla, forking over $700 every month, convinced he snagged a steal.

Not quite the financial victory he envisioned.

Mosley was smart.  He knew was expendable.  This team has too many holes to create one by cutting Mosley if he agreed to reasonable money.   He will be playing for 2025 because they will cut him if he stinks in 2024.

I personally would have replaced him with Payton NCSU but that requires a second round pick, and there will be good WRs and OL in the second round, if we have a second round pick.  We need to find mosley’s replacement rd 3-4 this year.

Are you predicting a major drop-off from last season? Cuz he was "fine" last year. Overpaid like Hell, but fine.

He turns 32 in June and he sucked last year.  Hell yes a "dropoff" is coming.  It's already arrived, and JD just handed him 2 more years.

Two weeks into camp we would all be marveling at the mid to late round draft LB looking so damn good or the cheap 4 million dollar vet looking really good.   We would also be marveling at the leadership of Quincy Williams.

Don't pay ilbs big bucks unless they can rush the passer and wreck games along with making tackles.

Eh, I think “sucked” is a pretty big exaggeration. He was fine last year. He’s average.

2 more years? He was already under contract for the upcoming season, no?

This isn't right - and neither are a lot of the posts in this thread.

CJ was due $17mm in salary this year - with his deferred signing bonus ($1.5mm) and his restructure (~$3mm) he was slated to be a $21.5mmish cap hit in 2024. His restructure was spread over void years so there would have been a $3mm cap hit in 2025 and a $3mm cap hit in 2026.

If we cut him we'd have been free of the $17mm salary - but would still be carrying his signing bonus ($1.5mm) for this year and ~$9mm of restructured bonuses (~$10.5mm) in dead cap for 2024. So if we wanted to cut CJ and sign Bobby Wagner we'd essentially have $19mm on the cap for Bobby Wagner/CJ Mosley to play somewhere else.

This new deal essentially throws out the old one. CJ was never going to make $17mm this year with the Jets - and the restructure of ~$10.5mm was already paid to him previously so he isn't giving that up. He gets more guaranteed money at a more reasonable level.

For the Jets its a massive win. We don't have a $10.5mm dead cap and don't need to fill a hole. His cap hit this year will likely be $8-$10mm ( so less or equal to what the dead cap would have been anyway) - and there is only ~$4mm of guarantees for 2025 - so if he sucks this year we can wash our hands with him for a relatively nominal cost.

This is a win. Even if people didn't want CJ Mosley on the team we free up as much or more money as if we were going to cut him anyway. If he played this year - even at a reduced salary we would have been on the hook for his $6mm of cap hits in 2025 and 2026 - so the dead cap next year will be better than having him just take a pay cut.

This is how teams get around pushing money into the future. You basically keep pushing cap into the future and then in the last year of the deal just throw out the contract - restructure a new one and you wipe the slate clean. .

Awesome break down, thank you.

He didn't suck last year. The Jets just saved a ton of money and get to invest that hopefully on offense. The guy is the leader of the defense. This move is great news.

He can’t run, tackle, defend the pass or get to the QB but he sure can LEAD!!!!

That was a lot of tackles for someone who can't tackle.
