CJ Mosley and Jets agree to a new deal

Recommended Posts

Love it.  Saves the Jets $7mm to 10mm in cap space, retains one of the team leaders, maintains the composure of the excellent defense and shows me and the rest of the world that CJ is a team guy and Jet all the way.  LOVE IT.  This along with the Morstead deal makes me very happy today.

Love the lowered cap hit for this year but can you imagine Mosely trying to lumber after opponents in year 2 of this deal? Yikes 😬

LOLZ.  CJ is not slow.  Lots of people seem to think his closing speed isn't so good.  The way the Jets "bee swarm" defense works at the second and third levels is to confound and prevent big plays.  CJ plays more of a read and react vacuum role vs. an attacking role.  Think of him as the Hoover vacuum of the defense.

Also adding here.  For smaller guys, CJ, Sherwood and Williams are very good tacklers.  With lesser leverage than a conventional LB corps, good tackling skills are key. They have it.

I can be wrong but I believe we’ll have over 100 million in cap space in 2025. Am I correct?

Correct, but that is assuming they don’t pick up any 5th year options.

Zach Wilson ($22.4M) and AVT ($15.3M)

They also have 38 players under contract in 2025 which is 5th most.

It was going to happen the question is what is this doing to cap commitments on the player down the road.   If we are saving nciely now just to pay later then it is still a bad move.

If it is strictly a pay cut then fine.

Tyron Smith incoming

Good. Seriously. My top 2 FA LTs are Alaric Jackson followed by Tyron Smith. Once the Jets fill the LT spot with a starting caliber player it gives them a ton of flexibility in the draft at 10. They can go WR, Bowers, trade down, O-line or QB. Its all on the table. Their primary FA goals are also taken care of - the O-line starters, QB2, and DT2. The only remaining holes are WR2 and S. They brought back Chuck Clark and can still re-sign Ash Davis for a trio of Clark, Davis and Adams. And there is still plenty of cap space and draft capital to bring in an impact WR2. Whether via trade, FA or drafting someone in Rd. 3 (maintaining that flexibility at the 10th overall pick).

Do you really there is any chance they pick up Zach’s option?

I think we can safely assume that is not happening.

AVT, yes..

As much as I love this, just would have loved to get this done last Sunday just to have the ammo. JD hasn’t signed a day 1 free agent since he’s been here but it would have made sense to have the opportunity of something broke.

SMART SMART move! Nice work!

Keep a crucial part of this defense and save a bunch of money on the cap. Exactly what I was hoping for!

Saves $13M on the cap

Let me guess...

"Thank you Joe Douglas. Thank you"?

Pushes his cap hit off a couple of seasons.  Helps this year.  I guess it doesn’t mean he’s locked in past this season but the jets will be on the hook for the guaranteed money regardless.

Not so about guaranteed money. The opening post says that there are no guarantees after this year, effectively giving the Jets a club option for 2025. The only pain in '25 is the pre-existing pain of taking into account the signing bonus, so it's all good.

So cap hit reduced from 21M to 9M?

They could have done this a week ago, which would have changed their purchasing power dramatically ahead of the legal tampering period?

Probably waited to see what the market value for an LB of his caliber is, for both the Jets and Mosley.  They gave him a deal that is a little better than what Bobby Wagner got.  Probably told him he could test free agency but was not getting any much better than what they were offering.

I'm here for you, my friend, in this time of need.

If you need to talk, or vent, or weep openly like a 13 year old girl, I'm here to listen.

P.S. told you Saleh was never getting rid of Mosely.

You are a very bad person

PFF grades aren't the be-all end-all but this matches the eye test. Mosely has been very good for the Jets the past 2 years (boneheaded line-jump aside), he just hasn't been "17M/year good." At 17M per, Mosely needed to be a dominator/game wrecker, not just "very very good, one of the best at his position"

At 8.5M per year, "very very good, one of the best at his position" is just fine

By PFF ranking, Pat Mahomes is barely even a top 10 QB.

Let that sink in.

In the last 2 years, Mosley has:

* Allowed 65.5 % and 73.8 % of passes to be completed on him, respectively;

* allowed 7.4 and 7.8 yards per target, respectively;

* allowed a 94+ QB Rating when targeted each season;

* Hurried the QB just 1x, knocked the QB down just 3x and Sacked him 1.5x across 52 blitz attempts;

* Recorded twice as many missed tackles (20) as TFLs (10);

* Forced just 2 fumbles and recorded just 2 INTs

PFF sucks and so does Mosley.

With a $21M cap number and $6M left in “voidable years.” Have to see how it’s structured, but it would appear to be a savings of about $8M on this year’s cap.

Nice. Thats 8 scrubs @ 1M each.

Also while it's admittedly unconfirmed, isn't there a rumor that he skins and then eats adorable puppies alive & then uses the pelts for toilet paper?

Total psychopath if true.

Mosely basically can't run sideline to sideline anymore

I get why they extended this dude he's a defensive leader and all but he's washed and no one really discusses it

But he’s really good at tackling RBs for 7 yard gains, bruh.
