Jets need to stop wasting time with Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg needs the ball

MAY 23, 2017, FILE PHOTO

Priority No. 1 for the Jets this season is to figure out if Christian Hackenberg is the long-term answer at QB.

  (JULIO CORTEZ/AP)

If the Jets are going to be all-in with the kids this season they have to give the ball to Christian Hackenberg.

Let’s see what he’s got.

Todd Bowles’ focus in training camp should be getting Hackenberg ready to start the opener against the Bills in a season dedicated to finding out if he can play. It’s a two-man competition. Hackenberg vs. Josh McCown is the headliner in camp – Bryce Petty is running a distant third – and any week McCown starts in the regular season is a wasted week.

McCown will be a good mentor for Hack. He’s 38 years old and is a leader and a good locker room guy. He’s actually more suited to be the Jets quarterback coach than their starting quarterback. He’s 18-42 as a starter including 2-20 over the last three years with the Bucs and Browns.

Hackenberg tunes out the noise, only cares what Jets think of him

He had one short spurt with the Bears in 2013 when he played at a high level and was embraced by the players in the locker room simply because he was not Jay Cutler.

If you believe in fairy tales, then go ahead and fantasize McCown will give the Jets a chance to be competitive and make a run for the playoffs. If you opt for the more realistic outlook for a team that has been stripped down to just its core group of young players, it makes no sense to leave the most important position in the rebuilding process on the sidelines and play a guy who is with his eighth team.

The Jets have to find out about Hackenberg before they invest a high first round pick on either Sam Darnold, Josh Allen or Josh Rosen. Remember, GM Mike Maccagnan used a second round pick on Hack in 2016 and the Jets then decided to redshirt him all last season despite going from Fitz to Geno to Fitz to Petty and then back to Fitz.

The Jets are wasting time if come the start of the season Christian Hackenberg (r.) is still watching Josh McCown throw the ball.

Unless Maccagnan completely whiffed on a player he might have over-drafted by two rounds, then Hackenberg should be good enough to beat out McCown. Why wait until the Jets are 1-5 and morale is low and the offensive line is banged up before jumping him to No. 1?

Josh McCown embracing role as mentor for younger Jets QBs

Make him earn it in camp, of course, but then give him the best chance to succeed by declaring him the starter before the third preseason game against the Giants on Aug. 26 and let this be his team for as long as he can hold onto it.

So, I asked GM Mike Maccagnan this week why even bother playing McCown. Every snap he takes in a regular season game takes a snap away from Hackenberg.

“The one thing Todd always talks about is competition,” Maccagnan said. “Whenever any player gets the ability to start, they have to have the ability to earn it. This will work itself out in training camp.”

If by the end of the summer McCown is so clearly better that Bowles would lose the locker room if he played Hackenberg, then the Jets future will not include him. If he can’t beat out McCown, how is he ever going to beat Tom Brady?

Hackenberg avoiding interceptions as QB continues to improve

Bowles is fighting for his job so if McCown is even just a little bit better, his instincts will be to think short term and self-preservation. But don’t feel sorry for Bowles. He’s making lots of money and he put himself in this win-or-else situation with a terrible 5-11 season in 2016 after nearly making the playoffs at 10-6 in his rookie year in 2015.

Josh McCown would be better served as the Jets QB coach than quarterback on the field.

(HOWARD SIMMONS/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS)

Hackenberg was the fourth quarterback picked in the 2016 draft but not only was he the only one of the top eight who not only didn’t get on the field for one snap as a rookie, he is the only one of the eight who didn’t start a game. Even if it was the Jets plan all along to redshirt him, that should have been ditched when Fitz started playing so poorly. But I got the feeling the Jets would rather have brought back Mark Sanchez or Brooks Bollinger than play Hackenberg.

Clearly, Hackenberg was such a project that Bowles and Maccagnan didn’t feel comfortable putting him on the field in 2016. The training wheels come off this year. Hackenberg had a productive offseason and has been throwing the ball well early in camp. He has not thrown an interception in the team drills in camp, so that’s progress. He hasn’t hit anybody on the sidelines yet, either.

Now he has to play well enough in the preseason games to give Bowles confidence he can play him against Buffalo.

Jets' Jamal Adams says die-on-field remark was about 'passion'

If new offensive coordinator John Morton and new QB coach Jeremy Bates can turn Hackenberg into a quarterback who by 2018 can lead the Jets into the playoffs, this will be a successful season.

No matter what happens, it’s still better than wasting time with McCown.

And Gay Myers who probably can't even coach a little league knows better than Bowles and Morton and Bates how to develop a young QB who's shelled shocked .

Wait so you are in favor of sitting and continue developing Hackenberg another season and then drafting another QB in 2018 before fully knowing what we have in Hackenberg and wasting all the time and effort developing him when we might never start him.

Why is he still shell shocked?  He has not set foot behind the Penn State offensive line you all whine about or for a team coached by the evil James Franklin in nineteen months.  I think people gloss over the change in the coaches.  That does not bode well for what they thought of Hackenberg in 2016. You don't draft a QB with the idea of sitting him to develop and let him be "developed" by guys that you don't want around.

BTW, the PC term is currently post traumatic stress disorder.

Not everything in life is black and white. Hackenberg can start 14 games and we will get more than enough info on him and whether he is good enough to be our future franchise QB. Gary Myers is a hack that feeds into the SOJF nonsense posters like you are looking for.

Why can't Hack win the job? Why does it have to be given to him in camp? If Hack is the answer he should have no problem beating out a JAG like MCcown. Patience....

I am in favor of developing Christian Hackenberg  and since that Job has been given to John Morton and Jeremy Bates, I will allow them to continue what appears to be working .

See if Hack doesn't start week 1, and gets inserted some time during the year as McCowns replacement that means he NEVER won the job, it will only mean that McCown lost the job, the backup QB can do NOTHING during practice in the regular season to EARN the job.

Where has anyone said that they are going to sit Hack another season?  Can anyone read?

There may be some truth to this, but not starting the season takes some of the pressure off.  That is what the Giants did with Eli.  It was Kurt Warner, but as soon as he lost 2 straight they pulled him for Eli who promptly dropped the next 6 before beating Parcells Cowboys in the last game. Eli had it easier because he was unquestionably the future of the team.  I think it was Accorsi who loved him, but something tells me that we won't have to wait 9 weeks for McCown to lose 2 straight.

I agree.  The kid has to win the position or we end up with another Mark Sanchez.

If Todd Bowles in fact knew that he would be replacing his OC following the 2016 season, then it made even more sense to not throw Hackenberg fully into Gailey's offensive scheme . Gailey told us that he wasn't going to mess with Hackenberg's footwork until after the season, further giving credence to the plan to sit the kid and not engulf him with earning a scheme he was never going to use .

He's being developed by the QB coach and OC.  Not people you don't want him around,  by the people you want him to be around.

This is the way if was for the majority of the history of the NFL.  Before the advent of the internet and forums for fanbases needing instant gratification before they run to the next prospect.

This Todd Bowles is a mastermind.  He is looking 5 steps ahead of everyone else.  He announced Fitzpatrick as a starter before he was under contract and did not play his 2nd rounder to avoid having him learn from a coach he planned to fire after the season.  Question:  If that was the plan, why waste the $12M on Fitzpatrick, $10M on Clady, and all the other money and time they spent in 2016?

Gailey said he wasn't going to mess with the kid's footwork until after the season, because the idea of changing the ingrained footwork of somebody that has been playing football all their life during the season is ridiculous and if you can't master that basic item, how are you going to lead a team?

So they wanted him to be developed by Bates and Morton, so they spent a year with him under Gailey and Patullo?  Makes perfect sense.  The problem is obviously participation trophies, the demand for instant gratification and the internet.

Elli Manning wasn't handed the job out of camp as a rookie. Was that situation handled poorly? Hack is a rookie this year and is being handled accordingly. He needs to earn the job which means outplaying Mccown/Petty or being less awful. Again, there is no reason to just hand Hack the job from day 1. I don't really care if he earns it in camp due to outstanding play or if he gets the job after Mccown falters. Either way, Hack will have to prove himself during the regular season or we move on. That evaluation can take place over 16/14/ 12 games.

consider the source.  myers is maybe a half a step ahead of maneesh when it comes to being a credible reporter.  but as for his comments, yep.  there's no sense in starting mccown if hack can lead the team.  but that's what training camp is all about.  if hack can become the leader the team believes in then he should start.  and that will include demonstrating good on field decision making and play execution.  there's nothing mysterious here.  mccown is with the jets to make sure they will have a qb to start and maybe win a few games if hack (or petty) can't cut it.

No they wanted to develop him though.  They had a 2nd year QB, a scrub and Fitz coming back after 10 wins.  He wasn't playing last year, wasn't going to get full attention of the staff.  Yes, instant gratification.  Like it or not.

What they want to do is not at issue.  They want to develop Petty too, in case you were wondering.  It is the methods that they have used and what insight we can gain from them we are discussing.  I do not understand how this relates to instant gratification.

Long term?....... Let's just find out if he can play.

Exactly no way in hell should this team or any team in the NFL be starting an 18-42 lifetime QB Josh McCown is a loser has been.  The Jets need to start Hackenberg or Petty or some young rookie QB who tried out for the team in the parking lot.

How can you evaluate Hackenberg if he doesn't start and play in all 16 games?

how can you make a decision to draft a top QB if you might already have one?

ENOUGH OF THE  OLD SUCKY RE-TREADS !!!!!!!!!

*No disrespect to Josh McCown he seems like a class act.

They look at Petty as the number 2 unless he totally shocks everyone.

You dont understand what I mean about instant gratification after reading the onslaught of posts ripping the team for not playing Hack last year, for not giving him 1st snaps at the opening of camp, of not being named the starter today?  And then not understanding the idea of developing a QB the old fashioned, tried and true method from day one of having a rookie QB sit behind a vet an learning?  Seriously?

Hack had a bad online, a team full of players who were not on scholarship, a shatty coach and bad wr's at PSU......according to most fans here he currently has a bad online, a shatty coach, the worst wr's in the league and many bootleg unknowns on the roster.

So if he is successful despite all this will he prove that he was able to overcome his circumstances? Will he show all the SOJF'S that he is the cream that rose to the top? Will he FINALLY shut all these negative SOJF's up? NO!!!....No matter what he does they will spend the season pointing out everything he does wrong and even if he is good it won't be good enough and for some he will only be holding us back from drafting their favorite prospect they know jackshyt about but some writer said was hot shyt.

The kid has 4 practice hairs on his "Hacksack" so far this year and now we are arguing about whether he will EVER be any good if he doesn't start EVERY game......wow....just....wow...gotta love this fanbase.

The last two times a rookie was handed the QB position did not work so well for us. Let him beat out McCown and earn it. If not in training camp then in the season. If he can't beat McCown out for the job how is he going to beat defenses on the field in the season?

McCown is the one who was handed the position.  He didn't do anything to 'earn' being #1 and he's taking reps from both petty and hack.  Hack has 0 reps with the 1's and petty is practicing with guys who are most likely going to be out of the league in September.

Hackenberg shouldn't be given anything at this point.  For the first time since Pennington
the team has allowed a young QB to develop and a Gary Myers article shouldn't change that.
Hackenberg needs to hit all the "landmarks" the coaching staff / front office puts in front
of him.  If he does then he should be named the starter not before.  He's got a lot of steps
to go:

- Continue to maintain his technique in practice
- Continue to progress in practice even when mistakes come
- Show in pre-season games that he can handle all that comes with
the position

Who cares what Myers wants?

How well will Hackenberg play? really? How he plays will not effect the QB we are absolutely taking next year.  Pick out the best QB you know and look at how he played his rookie year.  Almost none of them, and certainly not Hackenberg, will stop the Jets from taking a QB next year.

I don't disagree with this, but if he's close enough, I throw him into the fire. He's not going to learn much sitting on the bench at this point, and I'd rather he get in while the team is still hungry and optimistic, instead of when they're already demoralized at 1-5. That's not giving him the best chance to succeed.

I don't care what Gary Myers wants, but I also don't care how McCown performs as a starter. He has no future here.
