My take is it was useful for aggregating lots of stats that weren't as readily available elsewhere (e.g. dropped passes, missed blocks; things like that). But their overall aggregate player rating? Yeah "flawed" would be a gross understatement. Not everyone values each part of a player's game the same they do. Say a RB's blocking skills are lacking. OK duly noted, but if he's breaking tackles & outrunning defenders & gaining yards at 5-yard clips, really I'd give only a minor s**t. If it's a dedicated 3rd down back, sure then it's more important. But it's not of equal importance even though nominally they both play the same position. That stuff happens all over with their ratings, which are pretty arbitrary about how much to weight or not-weight this or that. Different levels of importance for that player, scheme, etc. Never mind placing equal weight onto games when a computer doesn’t realize or care that a player knowingly suited up while hurt & was still the best starter the team could put out there. His PFF rating would be higher if he’d just sat out the game, but they rate him as though he and everyone is 100% healthy every game. How much sense does that make, that being injured to only barely be able to play lowers one’s PFF rating but being injured even worse, to miss the game, doesn’t? So just aggregating stats alone without any rating judgment? It's fine, and it had use last I had access to it; even if there are flaws to that, too (e.g. they don't know what they don't know about the play's intent, like sometimes a sack can be credited to a player when it was really another player's assignment). My guess is they get those #s right more than not, as we all make those same assessments ourselves with regularity, but over a season that margin of error here & there can get magnified for their overall numerical rating. 5 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

PFF is an attempt to try measure success with a metric beyond standard stats... It is useful and it does a good job but using it as a 1 source as they want it to be is inherently flawed as most statistics are. Especially since they are guessing the design of the play without fully knowing. It's not as bad as people make it out... But it's not as good as they want it to be.
