Mike White

Because, in one fell swoop, Mike White stripped away from Zach-fans every excuse they were using to defend Zach sucking. Mike LaFleur! Weppinz! The OL! Nope. They’ll run the same sh*t with Hackett again in a few weeks. Time is a flat circle.

Why did he have to compete for the backup job ? Why didn’t he get a chance to compete for the starting job?

Because right or wrong, the powers that be felt the need to "protect" Zach Wilson from even the most remote hint or threat of a QB "competition".

He was anointed the perennial starter the moment they turned the card in on draft night.

Nothing about the post you responded to had anything to do with White starting anywhere.  It's just the bar some of you set for White while barely holding Zach Wilson to QB3-level standards.

It's OK to be a quality backup QB2 in this league.  That's better than having supposed tantalizing upside, or whatever, and never amounting to d**k.

And eventually, a "career QB2" can become an average QB1 down the road.  Just look at Geno Smith.

For me, he will go down as one of the more memorable players in Jets' history.

LOL really?

The most notable thing about Mike White is that in 2021 he instantly revealed how a replacement level player would look in the Jets offensive scheme surrounded by the Jets offensive talent. He outed Zach Wilson and raised the expectations around QB play for most of the fanbase who saw a journeyman nobody hang 400 yards on the eventual AFC Champions while Zach Wilson struggled to complete passes.

Mike White throws checkdown passes to moderate success.  JN: "All he does is checkdown all day"

Zach Wilson throws checkdown passes to very little success.  JN:  "He's becoming an elite game manager"

How do you like that check down @Jetsfan80

Don’t mind me.  Just typing game thread posts for later now to copy and paste after the next bomb.

We need to make use of the bye week and game prep.

Ah. It’s because Zach Wilson makes $10 million dollars per year to be the presumed backup and he was/is untradeable. A real albatross. Meanwhile, Mike White was on the street for about five minutes before the current best offensive mind in football signed him to be the backup behind an extremely injury prone QB.

The hate for MW is kind of insane.

The man gave fans some of the only high points over the last few years:

-- Amazing comeback win vs CIN where went for 4 bills and 3 passing TD and a TD rec

-- Blowout win over Bears in the rain

When I used to root for the Knicks growing up, this was the kind of guy who would could electrify the Garden, with his hustle, grit, toughness, etc.

Reminds you of dudes like John Starks and Anthony Mason:  overlooked and not necessarily the most talented and but dudes who work hard and lead by example.

Against Seattle, it's not as if he choked.  The man physically couldn't throw the ball because his ribs were smashed in multiple places.

Its shows you how down the coaching staff was on ZW that they had more confidence in that version of MW than in a healthy Zach Wilson...

Mike White was the king of checkdowns. He had 4 air yards per completion. Despite that, he always threw more INTs than TDs in a season, and most games he played in the Jets lost.

And I was at the Seattle game. You can't pin his ribs completely on his bad game; He made some awful decisions.

Mike White was exciting for a little bit, true. Once defenses figured him out he was done. He is made of glass, and he's limited by his arm. Sure, he thinks fast, but that's useless when defenses know he can't throw the ball deep.

This isn't hate for him, just as calling for Zach's replacement isn't hate for Zach. It's a desire for something better, and realistically Mike White sucks once defenses know what they're getting.

Why do you think Shane and I quickly jumped on the Rodgers wagon?  We fully understand we should want something more than White, especially since his most unarguable flaw is an inability to stay healthy.

I just wish we could have had White, or someone like him, as the QB2, with Zach relegated to QB3 duties.

Skykar Thompson almost beat him out. There was a lot of grumbling about white in camp. Nobody considers him starting material.

White is more fragile than Tua, but with the agility of a guy selling grilled cheese at a dead show.

Isn’t it reasonable to say your irrational love for white is no difference than someone else’s irrational love for Zach ?

I sure hope there aren’t any quite lovers that were in the ACM because that would be ******* hilarious 😂

Hate?  There is little hate but the love for him is far more bewildering than questioning how good he is.

He had his big chance, it was there for him to seize and perhaps be the jets starter this year, he utterly failed.

all jokes aside, the love probably comes from the fact that most of us didn't know he was on the roster prior to the Cincy game. It was a fun story and there was a brief moment where it seemed like maybe the Jets somehow lucked into something. It would be interesting if he got 1/3 the rope that Wilson has gotten, but that's not the world we live in. He's a good backup and probably a low end starter. Gets hurt too easily. Still better than Zach imo but that's not saying much.

Did anyone see the clip of MW standing next to McDaniel on the sideline right after he was intercepted? McDaniel says quietly “I feel bad about that” and MW struggles to hear him and has to bend down like two feet to get his ear close enough to McDaniel’s mouth. I feel bad about that?!?!? I don’t think Vince Lombardi would have said that

Hey he was sensational in those two games, loved those games and he deserves all the love for those two games, but he simply did not follow up after that when he had the chance.  He is in a good spot now though, if anything every happens to Tua he could be looking very good again.

I think that what Wilson has done is utterly amazing. He was essentially a ruined QB last year. Horrible coaching, no composure, complete lack of confidence and a death spiral to about as bad as a NFL QB to be. Unable to complete a short pass. inaccurate, indecisive. Broken.

Then he gets thrust into the Bills game after 4 plays on national TV. Plays OK, good enough for us to win. Outplays Josh Allen

But the offense is not made for him. He plays OK in the Dallas game but then throws 3 picks.

The Jets go run run pass against NE to protect him. It as the opposite effect. He looks a lot like 2022 Zach. They sign Siemian.

He goes into the KC game facing basically his last game as not a Jets starter but as a NFL starter in general. The Jets finally tailor the offense to him. Another national game and he comes up big. Without the Swift factor good chance to win and he outplays Mahomes.

Has an OK game against Denver but outplays R. Wilson. Show continued improvement.

Plays a much more solid game against Philly than stats suggest and continues to improve and out plays Hurts.

We are 3-3 against the hardest 6 game opening in the history of the NFL. Yes it is at least 50% because of the defense.

But going into the bye he has become a confident QB, is actually good on short throws. Accurate. His time to throw has decreased each game. He has moved the ball.

He has become an average starter. But you can see the potential.

If he can continue he has a very real shot of going from a QB one game away from permanent pergatory to a young QB that might actually live up  to his #2 pick status and may wind up our long term starter.

Or he could crater again.

Let's just enjoy the ride. I for one find it super exciting.
