It can be a burden also Crush. You need to remember to show compassion for the broken hearts of those we can’t share ourself with. There’s only so much of us to go around.

I work Healthcare. PE has destroyed any notion of idealism. It’s unconscionable.

Kids can’t get a starter home, partly, because of PE buying them up.

The NFL with its Peacock and $40 Parking was already soulless so I’d quip we wouldn’t notice a change, but full pay per view and a 24 game schedule in Riyadh is now on the docket.

The NFL thinks its too big to fail. And it is, for now. But little by little every cumulative dumb, greedy decision erodes the league just a bit. Eventually the empire will fall. Baseball was America’s sport until it wasn’t.

Been hearing about this erosion of the game for 40 years.  It’s going to fall like baseball.  Either by rule changes or now through possible vote in favor of private equity investment.  Well baseball fell from Americas sport to #2 and has remained there.  Why?  Because football is #1.  All while the NFL, besides some fans warnings, is stronger every year than the last.  Attendance, ratings revenue all continue to grow.

Meh. The game isn’t as good as it once was regardless of popularity. The rules have become silly(the new kickoff most recently). The draft has become a sideshow. Putting games in Iceland or on the Moon or wherever does nothing for me or most football fans. Blocking and tackling is being slowly taken away in the name of safety. For the football purists or whatever you want to call them, PE is just another eye roll with the rich getting richer for nothing besides greed.

Fans that can’t seem to understand that the players are the NFLs product and the NFLs worth less without product will never understand that with the size and speed of today’s athletes they need to be protected.
Also can’t figure out why anyone would care that their played a game in London vs a game in Jacksonville.  Or doesn’t understand how growing the game elsewhere makes financial sense.
It amazes me that some fans can’t grasp that the NFL is a business.  Or says things like they don’t care it’s popularity keeps growing, increases revenue every year, they don’t like change

The NFL doesn't care if your a purist or have been a fan for 60 years. If they're getting 2 new fans by losing you.. they're good with it regardless of whether these new fans even know anything about the game.

The NFL wants fans to have emotional attachments to teams because that's what gets people to spend small fortunes on the game. If people thought of the local team as a business, the league would make far less money. People generally aren't emotionally attached to the local Target or feel an obligation to "their" Target even when they get poor service and products.

And practically, this is casual entertainment for most people who watch games who have no interest in the business side of the game and have no responsibility to spend any time or brain power on the subject.

It's exactly this.

Fans have emotional attachments to their teams. The history, family connections, the team name (Redskins/Commanders debacle) all matter. Goodell obviously doesn’t see it that way, which is likely how he is where he is. He doesn’t have attachments to anything besides money.

What fan experience are you referencing here Matt, that you see as being ruined?

Rule changes, games during the week, pay per view games, potential elimination of pesky things like tailgating.

People get attached/loyal to LOCAL businesses all the time.  Many people make some or all of their buying decisions (or used to, pre-Amazon, at least) based on their desire to be supporting local business.

Target isn't a local business.

Teams represent their metropolitan areas, but fans have been aware for decades that these sports are businesses, and that these teams, if desired, can be moved somewhere else.  Sports being business shouldn't be new or news to anyone.

I want to ask again, what is the great fear here, specifically?  What are the opponents of this fearful will actually happen that is bad because of this 10% ownership thing?  So far all I'm reading is the usual "hate the rich, anti-capitalism" stuff so popular these days, not actual tangible harms being predicted.

As a corporate entity that is on the sell side of a private equity buy-out, there are guardrails that you can put in place to the degree of input or control a PE firm will have with your company. You just need to spell those out and negotiate. Anything is negotiable.

I don't begrudge owners increasing the value of their investment in this way.

Sports rules have changed since their start, and will continue to do so forever going forward.  That's not new or in any way related to this news.

Games during the week?  Like Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, like we had long before this news?  And why is a game on a weekday a worse "fan experience" than a game on a Sunday?  Why is Monday Night Football considered prestigious and desirous by so many fans?

Pay Per View already exists, it's called the Sunday Ticket, and it's awesome, as it allows out of town fans to see far away teams games.  Local fans have never had to worry and no one has suggested that will ever change as yet.

Who at the NFL is suggesting the elimination of tailgating?  Seems the NFL leans pretty hard into tailgating compared to most pro sports.  There is no such thing as tailgating at Nationals baseball games, as an example.

Thanks Roger. there was a playoff game on Peacock last year.

Yeah ... I don't get the fear here other than it's not the way it's always been done.

Regarding game scheduling ...

Monday Night Football is a nostalgic tradition that allows the entire nation to watch two teams. Prestigious.

Thursday Night Football led to more injuries , fairness issues with travel and scheduling ... It cheapened Monday night a bit. I don't love Thursday or Sunday Night Football ... And I don't think I am alone.

But at the end of the day ....take my money ... I'm watching regardless.

Ask any season ticket holder how they feel about prime time games. The Jets schedule is brutal this year for a fan with a family. I’m sure they look good on a spreadsheet though.

Fear monger much?  Oh, forgot who I was talking to for a second, you probably think Jet Blue and Zach Wilson's Uncle are stealing your Social Security, lol.

They'll also be sellouts with no shortage of people who want to go beyond that.

So bad for you =/= bad for everyone.

And local in-stadium fans are only part of a team's fandom and reach.  It's not always about what's good for you personally Matt, and your personal situation.  Should the team not play on a Sunday because little Timmy has a T-Ball game that day too?  No one begrudges prioritizing your family, but the world does not revolve around being easy for you, nor should it.  Seems 50,000 other fans manage to make it work just fine.

And again, prime-time already exist, and are great for the league to reach the biggest # of fans possible in the most prestigious way possible, and these primetime games have absolutely nothing to do with this news about minority ownership rules.
