TAMPA - The Bucs may be on the verge of losing yet another assistant coach to a rival NFC club.

Quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett, who came to Tampa two years ago after walking away from a job as the Jets offensive coordinator, is believed to be a candidate to replace Jeff Jagodzinski as offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers.

Hackett, whose contract with the Bucs expires at the end of the month, already has spoken with Packers coach Mike McCarthy about the job, but the level of those discussions remains unknown.

McCarthy worked as Hackett's quarterbacks coach when Hackett was the head coach at the University of Pittsburgh in the early '90s.

McCarthy attempted to make Hackett his offensive coordinator a year ago when he first became the Packers head coach, but Hackett was denied a chance to interview for the post.

Hackett, who has been an NFL assistant coach for 18 years, could not be reached for comment.

Quarterback Chris Simms said Hackett's presence was one of the reasons he passed on an opportunity to test the free-agent market and instead opted to re-sign with the Bucs before the end of the 2006 season.

Should he leave, Hackett would be the second Bucs assistant to sign with another club. Former linebackers coach Joe Barry joined the Detroit Lions as defensive coordinator last week.

The Bucs also fired two defensive assistants, line coach Jethro Franklin and defensive backs coach Greg Burns. Burns has been replaced by Raheem Morris. No replacement for Franklin has been named.

Wouldn't that be the final nail in the coffin on Hackett's career without Walsh?

1 - End of Joe Montana's career

2 - Benched Rich Gannon in favor of Elvis Grbac

3 - Fired as KC's OC

4 - Hired as USC's HC

5 - Takes less than 3 years to totally destroy USC's football program. Fired as USC HC.

6 - Hired as Jets OC. New WCO is installed with Sloth-like QB Testaverde.

7 - New franchise QB Pennington is seriously injured 2x in 2 years.

8 - Fired as Jets OC.

9 - Hired as TB's QB coach

10 - QB Simms gets spleen ruptured after averaging 5.5ypa. QB Gradkowski replaces him & averages 5.1 ypa.

11 - Hired as GB's OC

12 - End of Brett Favre's career

Think Favre is making huge mistake if he comes back for 2007 no matter what. But if he coems back now, he's a masochist. Here comes Paulie Nonuts with his huge playbook of screens and swings off three-step drops, all under center, devoid of anything longer than 7 yards. There would be fistfights on the sidelines, unless Hackett goes to the booth, in whcih case Favre would kick his ass every halftime. And Hackett's car would be destroyed 8 times a year. It's a bigger mismatch than Hackett and Testaverde, which is almsot impossible.

QB's swear by the guy. One and all. I would like him as my QB coach. OC, not so much.

I like how that article says Hackett "walked away from the Jets OC job." Firing Hackett was the only smart thing Herm did, but too be fair Herm was a big reason he was our OC to begin with.

In proper terms, Hackett did "walk away" from the Jets position, in as much that if he didn't, he was going to be let go.

Yeah, Hackett "walked away" the same way some outlaws "decided to leave town" right before the posse arrived.

The more I think about this it must be either a subtle way to force Favre's hand onto the retirment side of the fence or it must be some kind of league quota thing where risk-Averse OC candidates have to be interviewed.

You can also add that he ran the Pitt Panthers football program into the ground and they have yet to still recover from that. He also may very well be the only coach ever fired by Tom Landry.

How this guy stays in football is beyond me.

Favre deserves better..

Maybe he can install a few more 3rd and 8 draw plays to help him out!

In 2004, the Jets ranked 12th in offense under Paul Hackett. In 2006 the Jets ranked 25th in offense under Schottenheimer. Brett Favre played most of his career in a prototypical West Coast offense and will have one of the best WCO coordinaors in Hackett who might be able to restrain Favre from too much freelancing and cut down on his INT's. Makes perfect sense as there is no better WCO QB than Brett Favre.
