Darrelle Revis must attend for bonus

By Rich Cimini

ESPNNewYork.com | April 7, 2013

Another storm has developed between Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets. This time, the issue is the offseason conditioning program, which begins April 15.

Even though they may trade him before or during the April 25 draft, the Jets plan to enforce language in the star cornerback's contract that requires him to participate in the voluntary workouts to collect bonus money, sources said.

Revis has been rehabbing his surgically repaired knee with his personal trainer in Arizona and, with an uncertain future, he'd prefer to stay there at least through the draft to focus on his rehab and avoid a potentially uncomfortable situation, according to sources.

His presence at the Jets' training facility would be awkward to say the least, also creating a possible distraction for the team. The Jets have been shopping him for almost two months.

But, barring a change of heart, Revis is expected to fly to New Jersey for the start of the conditioning program. He won't be thrilled, but he has $3 million riding on it.

When Revis renegotiated his contract in 2010, following his second holdout in three years, he agreed to a clause that requires his attendance in all offseason activities -- even non-mandatory workouts, sources said.

If Revis doesn't participate in approximately 80 percent of the workouts, he will forfeit not only a $1 million workout bonus, but two other bonuses -- a $1 million roster bonus (triggered March 17, but payable at a later date) and a $1 million reporting bonus at the start of training camp.

They're tied together, providing significant financial motivation to attend. It was the Jets' way of making sure Revis stays on his best behavior, an aspect of his four-year, $46 million contract that was kept relatively quiet -- until now.

Revis always has been a regular in the offseason program -- even in 2010, when he staged a lengthy training-camp holdout -- but this isn't a normal offseason because of his injury and a possible trade.

Nevertheless, the team is holding his feet to the fire -- or, in this case, his knee, insisting that he show for the offseason.

The Jets declined comment, but they're aware of his feelings about the offseason program, sources said.

Throughout the offseason, general manager John Idzik has maintained the team's priority is Revis' health. He underwent ACL surgery last October and, barring a setback, should be ready for the start of training camp.

Idzik said recently he has no problem with Revis rehabbing in Arizona, but he also said, "I can't wait to see Darrelle in the building." The Jets have received weekly updates on his progress, but they'd also like their doctors to examine him.

If the Jets allow Revis to skip the early part of the offseason program, it could hurt their leverage in trade talks because it would give the impression they've decided to deal him.

Right now, their best form of leverage is that he's under contract for another year, allowing the Jets to convey the message they're under no obligation to trade him.

"I think as we get into the offseason program -- it's all voluntary -- but you would hope that most of your players want to be there and be in the building and get the juices flowing with our staff and everybody that we have," Idzik said at the scouting combine in late February.

"We have a fine medical staff. We have a great training staff. We have tremendous facilities, so we feel that we have a lot to offer Darrelle and all of our players. We would hope that they would be there, but at the end of the day, it's what's best for Darrelle, how can we get him to clear medically and get back to the field to where he was before as quickly as possible."

It's not that simple, of course.

Revis will become an unrestricted free agent after the season (they can't use the franchise tag on him, per his contract) and the Jets appear reluctant to sign him to a long-term extension. As a result, they've been dangling him in trade talks.

Idzik and owner Woody Johnson are playing a game of semantics, insisting they're not actively shopping Revis but making it clear they'd consider a trade it if would help the team. Revis is in limbo, wondering if he'll be back.

So far, only one serious suitor has emerged 00 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There was heated speculation at last month's league meetings of a possible deal, but the talk has died down in recent weeks. The issue could be whether the Bucs are willing to include their first-round pick (13th overall) in a compensation package.

Good for Idzik.

Again brings home that he wants toi be paid like Tom Brady or Peyton or ELi Manning or Joe Flacco wihtout accepting that such a  contract changes his relationship with the franchise. Revis expects to be paid top dollar but resevers the right to act like a petulant child. Thta won't work, not here, not Tampa not anywhere . And each of those guys is practically management once they signed up for the big money. No corner is going to be that much a part of a franchise.

This was prolly apart of the game plan all along.  Let him get healthy, then have him come into mini-camp to get a looksie.   I would imagine that we are allowed to video tape players in our own facilities.  Perhaps some visual evidence of his development can motivate some would-be traders.  Similar to the Peyton Manning tape from yesteryear.

I see this as a huge boon in our moving forward.

It could just be as simple as the new GM wants to meet Revis.

The question needs to be asked, why do Jets want to pay 3 million dollars for workouts on a guy they are gonna trade in 2 weeks?

So they can trade him.for a.second rounder this and.next year BRO! Get with the times, that's real GMing!

The article itself doesn't sound as vicious  as the title. Cimini is no better than the rest of these jack rabbits. Also, no way is Revis going to challenge how he makes $3 mil. So it kinda of a none story but a big story in a dead period.

Totally agree.

Totally agree.

It's significant because they're dragging a clearly annoyed Revis into camp for no other reason than to show him who's boss. They have the injury excuse, and it would have been easy enough to leave him rehabbing in Arizona. Instead, they're going to bring him to NJ and hope that he doesn't make waves with his teammates or the media. It'll be a real test of just how much Idzik has shifted the culture inside the building. If Revis pops off to the press, it'll be interesting to see how Rex/Idzik/Woody responds.

Revis also has to consider 2 things. First he has to show his injury is healed foir any potential new team. But second and bigger, he has to demostrate he understands if he is going to get paid like a QB it's past time to stop with the nonsense and whining. If he thinks anyone is going to pay him top dollar to set up his next holdout with his new team t he should stay home. If Revis takes a QB-dollar figure contract he will no longer be simply a highly paid corner, he'll be part of a franchise. Not clear he grasps the  he level of scrutiny he's setting himself up for.

Pure guess here.  Just like everything else we write abou the Revis trade.

As was debated in the contract restructure thread a few weeks ago.  Nobody gives up a benefit they have in a contract unless they get something in return.

Perhaps the Jets will let Revis stay home, if he drops the no franchise tag clause in his contract.

Which at this point in time might not be a horrible idea for him

I'm not overly sure that will play a role. The last player Schwartz and Feinsod sold to the Bucs was Vincent Jackson, and he actually sat out the ten games on a holdout. I don't know if Tampa's afraid of those types of guys.

The scrutiny already exists. Its not just us, but the entire league that knows about his "Mevis" ways. He is just so elite right now, that he is kind of getting away with it. I am sure he will live to regret it one day when he is past his prime and gets dicked for it. TO was tolerated when he was good too.. look at him now.

Pending we read the same Jets rumors, Revis hasn't act up at all or showed any friction in regards to not wanting to be on the team or flexing his leverage. Also from reading the article the "who's boss" thing wasn't really presented. It's was more of you have $3 mil bonus coming and we'll like to get to know ya, check out your health and for you to be around the family. Not really a chase of drama in this one at all. As for making "waves" ( with his teammates) you mean conflict? Those who still remain Jets especially (those on defense) Harris and Cro know Revis showed up for free involuntary workouts. So no way is the money man going to miss 80% of an $3 mil involuntary workouts.

Anonymous sources familiar with his thinking said that he believes the bonus should be 16 million.

Truth be told, this franchise didnt even understand that until Idzik was hired. Revis was only following suit.

Idzik is handling Revis like a guy who expects every draft pick to ascend to greatness, be part of the whole, and feel grateful to play for the Jets, not positioning the Jets as the organization that fawns over the one great player they've drafted in the past 3 decades. Which is what Tanny and Rex did.

Uhm, it's not a matter of the Jets wanting to pay Revis $3m for a workout bonus.  It's a matter of Revis believing that he didn't have to fulfill certain provisions of the contract in order to receive the bonus.

Read the article and others.  This happened because Revis didn't plan to show up and had to be reminded that if he didn't show up for 80% of the workouts he forfeits $3m.  Revis doesn't want to lose out on that money.
