No tailgating for the Super Bowl at Metlife

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Forget about setting up those kegs or buffet tables in the parking lot before this season's Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium. There will be no tailgating, according to the game's committee CEO, Al Kelly.

"You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car," Kelly said. "And provided you're in the boundaries of a single parking space, you'll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However, you're not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you're not going to be able to take out a grill, and you're not going to be able to take up more than one parking space. And it'll all be watched very carefully."

-- Al Kelly, Super Bowl committee

The tailgating news came during the committee's Monday news conference regarding transportation and safety for the Feb. 2, 2014, game.

There will be only three ways for the expected 80,000 ticket holders to get to the game. The committee will charter buses called the Fan Express, which will cost $51 and pick up and drop off passengers at nine locations around the region. Fans can also take N.J. Transit to the MetLife Stadium stop or be dropped off by vehicles that must have parking passes.

There will be fewer than 13,000 parking spots available for fans.

And hiring a black car, taxi or limo won't be an option for VIPs who will spend thousands of dollars per ticket. No cars will be allowed near the stadium on game day without parking passes, and any car that drops off a passenger will have to wait at the stadium.

"Nobody's going to be dropped off by black car," Kelly said. "You can have a black car, a green car, a white car, a red car as long as you have parking, and the car needs to stay on the premises the entire time."

Fans who had considered parking farther from the stadium and getting there on foot will not be allowed to enter.

"You cannot walk to the Super Bowl," Kelly said. "You can get your hotel to drop you off at one of the New Jersey Transit locations or get the shuttle to take you to a Fan Express location, but you cannot walk."

Ultimately, Kelly said he expects that between 70 and 80 percent of all ticket holders will get to the game via public transportation or shuttle bus. There will be 1,600 parking spots for buses.

The reduced parking capacity is a result of the large security perimeter needed for the Super Bowl. Fans will have to go through security screenings at the train station and again at the stadium, Kelly said.

Kelly and fellow host committee members Woody Johnson (New York Jets owner) and Steve Tisch (New York Giants co-owner) have been calling Super Bowl XLVIII the public transportation Super Bowl ever since they started working on the logistics.

Kelly introduced officials from the MTA, NJ Transit and NJ Path to discuss the added schedules and plans for the week of the Super Bowl, when New York City and New Jersey could see an influx of 400,000 travelers.

NJ Transit will offer a Super Pass for $50 that will be good for all trains, light rail and bus service it provides.

The committee had tried to put together a transit card that would have allowed Super Bowl visitors to switch between all three forms of transit on a single ticket, but it fell apart. Kelly said the different technologies used by the organizations made it a complicated undertaking, though the desire was there.

James Simpson, the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, said the department will suspend all construction before the week of the game and planned to staff Super Bowl media day and game day at the same level it does for a weather emergency.

Lanes will be dedicated exclusively to official Super Bowl vehicles on game day. The goal, Simpson said, is to keep traffic moving smoothly on all highways and bridges during a potentially high-traffic time period.

Of course, there is potential for snow and ice. A blizzard might make for great television viewing but would be a logistical nightmare for Super Bowl organizers. Simpson said New Jersey has the equipment and personnel to manage any kind of weather, however.

I feel like this is a fear of A LOT of NYers buying parking passes, and just wanting to tailgate at the Super Bowl to say they were there. Also think the violence that tailgating is getting blamed for plays a factor.

And of course the $$$$ issue, they want people eating, and drinking where, when, and for how much they so choose!

Get used to it.  Tailgating is about to go the way of the dinosaur within the next 5 or so years.  MetLife will be one of the pioneers in banning it

If this happens then I will be twice as pissed we didn't get the Manhattan stadium, that was the fans biggest gripe couldn't tailgate!

Your post above this one is 100% correct.  Except for the " the violence that tailgating is getting blamed for"  Tailgating is responsible for a lot of violence and stupid behavior.  it is the banner it will be banned under even though the real reason will be $ as you said

My thing is you can ban tailgating, but it's not going to stop drunken idiots fighting on their way to their cars, it's just going to limit the time they have after the game to instigate the fighting, but then also more people will be leaving right after the game, bigger traffic jams, and some road rage fights will inso, they will be selling booze inside, and guys, and gals will still get drunk, and fight tailgating, or not IMO at football games more so than any sport.

In a sick kind of way I'm kind of hoping the Super Bowl is played in conditions like Philly yesterday.

It will be a heck of a lot of fun to see how many "upper echelon" people will elect to  watch the game from their hotel rooms.  20,000 empty seats for the Super Bowl.  Great TV

Hey maybe they will give the tickets away to some homeless people so some Jets fans can go.  :)

Honestly... Good.  The drunken trash ruin the game for the rest of us.

Sucks, but the better option, breathalyze and refuse admittance, isn't likely to happen.

Doubt those who drink a case of Coors Light in the parking lot before the game are doing the same at $9 a clip.

Couldn't agree with you more.  My youngest son, who is a teenager, has never been to an NFL game with me because of the drunks.     That sucks

I'm not a "prohibitionist"   I love my dark beer,  wings, pizza, pasta, Philly cheese steaks, drink more then my share, but the stadium experience has gotten really bad.   Can't even use the logic of "well get good seats"  most fights happen in the parking lot.   Love tailgating, but won't be sorry to see it go

I remember having season tickets to the Hitmen back in the XFL days (they were cheap, shut up).  I remember going to a game that was absolutely BRUTALLY cold.  The field was practically frozen, it looked like a sheet of ice.  I actually want the game to look like the Eagles/Lions game yesterday though.  That would be cool.

I'm sure the people spending thousands per ticket don't give a crap if they can't find a parking spot or negotiate their way through the cramped parking lot because of people blocking the roadway.  Has always been a favorite of mine, even in the old stadiums, though I think it's somehow worse in this one.  Or maybe I just stopped getting there at 9:15am for a 1:00 game and now I only arrive when the lot's 80% filled.

There is going to be road rage incidents of epic levels, worse than that if it's cold and snowy.Oner thing I don;t miss about giving up tickets this year is paying money and then to be treated like a criminal . People payng thousands to go to thsi game are not going to be pleasant.

I know several cops assigned to terrorist task forces; the whole secuirty thing is a pointless show. The only reason they frisk us is because they don't want you drinking your beer inside. If a determined terrorist wants  to cause an incident those $8 hour people are absolutely worthless.

Wow. 13,000 spots total. $51 for the bus. Public trans after spending $5,000 for a ticket. Cattle pasture from train stop to sadium entrace and vice versa. Freezing weather to boot. Possibly the biggest logistical nightmare in entertainment history. SOJ

All the happytalk about the train obscures the fact it's has all the ambience of the rail scenes in "Schindler's List", complete with cops with dogs and AR15s. It's a horrible crowded nasty experience. $5000 for tickets and people cannot take limos or their own car?

Yeah- they say this now - but when 50 Cent or some CEO or another high level, box seat attendee demands personal service to and from the front gate, they're going to get it. This has to be a smoke and mirrors show of force for the average Joe, general admission sucker to reduce their level of expectation prior to this logistical sh*t show.

That's a really stupid fear. Do they think all NY fans are Patton Oswalt in Big Fan?
