ESPN NFL analyst and former All-Pro defensive end Marcellus Wiley knows how hard it is to succeed in the National Football League without cheating and takes umbrage with how the New England Patriots have built their dynasty.

The fallout from scandals such as SpyGate and DeflateGate that have dogged the Patriots during their run of four Super Bowl championships in six appearances over the past 15 years has called some to suggest a metaphorical asterisk be placed next to the franchise in the record books.

"Absolutely," Wiley said when asked in an interview with 97.5 FM The Fanatic in Philadelphia if the Patriots deserve an asterisk. "Without question. It is what it is. No-one told them to cheat. No one forced them to cheat. Every other team out there whether they cheated or not, the Patriots got caught. Say whatever you want about it 'You're just mad because you didn't beat us,' well, who knows what would have happened if we were doing what they were doing. The reality is, they cheated."

From SpyGate to DeflateGate, Wiley says that the Patriots' actions over the past decade and a half cloud whatever the perception of this run will be in the future.

"They were a great team, they were a great dynasty and they were also great at cheating," Wiley said when asked how he'll remember this run of success under Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. "I won't forget how great they played the game but also the fact that they've had unfair advantages in the way that they've played the game. It's all in the same conversation. It's not with any hateraid that I say it. I'm not pulling any punches, either.

"It's a reality that they went to the Super Bowl with SpyGate. There's a reality that they're going through DeflateGate rigth now. People want to put those things to the side or bury them and you can never bury them. Who knows how many yards they got off of their unfair advantages? What was on those SpyGate tapes that were burnt? The reality is, you burnt tapes. That lets me know that whatever we're assuming was on those tapes, it's even more egregious than that.

"Playing the game, it's difficult to play the game the right way. I'm a guy who never took PEDs, never took steroids, HGH, none of that. It's hard enough to get out there. You're telling me that there's a collective team that had unfair advantages of intel of practice, of play calls? ... If you give me that kind of intel, I can tell you right know, I'll take all of the guess-work out of football and it comes down to reaction."

Wiley's stance is not one that is foreign to former players and this conversation is likely one that will be had in the weeks, months and years to come after the Patriots' Super Bowl XLIX victory.

From the Wiley series, in his words:

“Sometimes you need a fistful of Vioxx. Any anti-inflammatory. You need it to survive. Vioxx is a beast. I love Vioxx. I'm going to invest in that company when I retire.

The Eagles have almost as much bitterness towards the Patriots as the Jets and Jets fans, but this is not the first time we've heard players from other teams grumbling about the Pats and their 'methods'. No, everyone else does NOT do it. Only other cheaters say that.

It wasn't even called the Super Bowl way back then.

You're resurrecting this tired routine, now. :face:

You spent like five years not posting here. You really didn't come up with any new material?

That's just lazy. You used to be one of the great trolls in the history of the internet. Now you're Jesse Owens racing a horse.

NASCAR suspends the hell out of people. Chip Knaus has been suspended multiple times if you want to compare him to Belichik.

Yep and he has won a sh*tload of championships and is generally looked upon favorably.  Bending the rules is cool, especially if you don't get caught.  The 7/8s Chevelle, the vinyl Road Runner.  Those things are celebrated, not looked down on as an "unfair advantage"

Of course it will.

People hate the fact that the Patriots have 4 Super Bowl titles in the last 14 years.

That's untrue.

If they had won them fairly, most of us would tip our cap and say "good job". It would suck, but I can respect it. That team has not earned any respect.

People don't hate the 49ers for all their titles. infact they are revered for their success. Nor do people hate any other team for their success. But those very same people want to put an asterisk on the Pats titles. Why would that be ?

Eh, I don't know bow favorably he's looked upon. I'm an HMS fan and I consider him the biggest cheater out there.

So, do you respect the Broncos who blatantly circumvented the salary cap to keep Elway and Davis to win Super Bowls?

Or what about the Dolphins who did not cover the field during a monsoon?

Of course not.

But they don't have a bunch of smarmy dickhead fans defending every move.

If you really think about it, you're the reason the world hates the Pats.
