CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Domestic violence charges against Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy have been dismissed, with his accuser not making herself available to help with the case, prosecutors announced Monday.

Hardy's appeal of the 2014 conviction was scheduled to begin Monday morning at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.

Hardy left the courthouse without comment.

Hardy requested the jury trial on July 15 after Mecklenburg District Court Judge Rebecca Thorne Tin found the 2013 Pro Bowl selection guilty of assaulting and threatening Nicole Holder, his ex-girlfriend. Under North Carolina law, his appeal set aside the guilty verdict.

Hardy played only one game last season but received $13.1 million from Carolina after being designated the franchise tag in February.

Hardy was placed on the inactive roster in Week 2, days after the NFL's climate regarding domestic violence changed with the release of a video showing then-Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice hitting his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in a casino elevator.

He was placed on the commissioner's exempt list before Week 3 until his case was resolved. General manager Dave Gettleman said after the July 15 verdict that "what's happened with Greg is very concerning and disappointing."

With the charges dismissed some team will go after Hardy because he can get to

the QB.  But will they be willing to deal with all of the domestic violence groups that

will picket their team

This is ridiculous. Give the girl money so she won't show and this is the result. Now Carolina was punished by having to pay this guy 13 mill and not get any production.

This sucks, but it is our legal system. I hope Godell can at least suspend him 4 games.

Are the Pats still paying Hernandez?  Innocent until proven guilty!!!

Suspend him for what? He wasn't convicted of anything.

With him being an upcoming free agent I wouldn't be shocked if this is what happened.

Give the girl 250K so she can go away and Hardy can attempt to cash in on a yearly

salary of 10+ million.  It's amazing what money can do

You don't have to be convicted. He said that if the NFLs investigation leads them to believe that a behavior has taken place that is against the rules, a suspension can still be be placed.  If you get caught with weed and your a Bronco, while it is not a crime in Colorado you can still be punished.

What if a player punches a guy and then pays him $10,000 not to press charges or call the cops. should it be ignored, or if they belive he hit the woman and settled out of court.  The crime took place even though a conviction did not.

Hardy would look pretty damn good in the Green & White.

Jets should trade Snacks to a team that can't stop the run, Bears, Falcons, Saints, some team in the NFC & just keep building a nasty front 7 since Bowles likes blitzing.

You add Jerry Hughes, Hardy & Maxwell your on your way to having a really, really nasty defense!

Barnes is cheap & can be your designated run stuffer.

It's really an indictment of our legal system that allows gold diggers to ruin career's just so they can walk away with undeserved amounts of cash.

I had followed this case and it looked like the classic case  playing victim. Now most likely he paid her to stay out of court. So one way or the other while the guy is poorer by his wallet and his reputation the women walks away richer for playing victim.

If you follow the case you understand that he was already found guilty by a judge.

Not sure how I feel about this.  I've always liked the idea of placing some emphasis on character in putting a roster together but tired of watching teams win SB's with low-character guys on their rosters.  I'd prefer they fill the need without a person like Hardy but couldn't say I don't  understand why they're doing it if they were to go that route.

Uhhh, can this guy play OLB in a 3-4?

I was wondering the same thing.  Found an article that said he wanted to play OLB, but doesn't look like he's actually ever done it.

This article seems to rule out the possibility and makes some good points about what Hardy has to offer as a DE.
