Free Agency so far, has been good for the Tank...   err.  I mean the Rebuild.

Browns, Bears, Jags and SF all got better.  That leaves the Rams and us as the worst teams on paper.

Support the rebuild!

I think you're actually over rating the RB.

Downgrade that to a C.

I was going back and forth whether to grade them a C or a B it was a complete toss up.  I'm just a really big fan of Powell and what he brings to the table when utilized properly.

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2017/03/what_does_jets_depth_chart_look_like_after_opening.html#incart_river_index

By Connor Hughes | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

The first wave of free agency is over. Here's what the Jets depth chart looks like heading into the 2017 NFL season.

Filling out the depth chart

The Jets have taken a difference approach in the opening days of free agency. Unlike years past where they signed, signed and signed some more, they've been playing the field, waiting for things to settle, making their run at the second-tier targets, and letting others overpay the sexy names.

Five days in, the Jets have retained five of their own, hosted a handful of visits, and signed two others. Where does it leave their depth chart? Let's take a look.

Andrew Mills

QUARTERBACK:

Starter: Bryce Petty
Position Grade: D
Notable Backup: Christian Hackenberg

Analysis:
Things aren't looking very good right now. The Jets missed out on Brian Hoyer, Tyrod Taylor, Ryan Mallett and Mike Glennon. They're still expected to add another body, and for good reason. Bryce Petty left much to be desired during his six appearances in 2016. Christian Hackenberg dressed (not played) in only one game.

John Munson

RUNNING BACK

Starter: Matt Forte
Position Grade: C+
Notable Backup: Bilal Powell

Analysis:
Matt Forte, even at 31, is a serviceable player in the NFL. Bilal Powell provides a tremendous complement. The Jets could get better at the position (Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook), but it's not necessarily a weakness. They'll be fine if they make no changes to the group.

John Munson

RECEIVERS

Starters: Quincy Enunwa, Eric Decker, Robbie Anderson
Position Grade: C+
Notable Backups: Devin Smith, Jalin Marshall, Charone Peake

Analysis:
We'll give this unit a C+, simply because they're unproven. Enunwa, Anderson, Smith, Marshall and Peake haven't done anything to show any can be a No. 1 wideout yet. There have been flashes, but no consistency. Decker has proven more of a great No. 2. With that being said, of all positions, this has the biggest room for growth.

If Anderson and Enunwa take that next step, they can elevate the grade to a B+ or even an A by season's end. They're just unproven, so we'll go with a C+.

Dennis Schneidler

TIGHT ENDS

Starter: Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Position Grade: D
Notable Backup: Braedon Bowman, Eric Tomlinson

Analysis:
Mike Maccagnan said during the NFL Combine he wants to improve the tight end position. He hasn't yet. Seferian-Jenkins has potential, but hasn't proven he can stay healthy, or be productive. Bowman and Tomlinson are roster-bubble players on any other roster.

Kelley L Cox

OFFENSIVE LINE

Starters: Kelvin Beachum (LT), James Carpenter (LG), Wesley Johnson (C), Brian Winters (RG), Brandon Shell (RT)
Position Grade: B
Notable Backup: Ben Ijalana (OT), Brent Qvale (OT)

Analysis:
Retaining Johnson and Winters, and signing Beachum were big moves by the Jets. This unit is far from a weakness. All players have potential, and each projected starter is under 28. Could the Jets get better in some spots? Sure, but the Jets can win with this group.

Associated Press

DEFENSIVE LINE

Starters: Muhammad Wilkerson (DT), Deon Simon (NT), Leonard Williams (DE)
Position Grade: A
Notable Backups: Sheldon Richardson (DE), Steve McLendon (DL), Lawrence Thomas (DE)

Analysis:
Easily the strongest unit on the Jets' roster. Nothing will change if Maccagnan trades Sheldon Richardson. Wilkerson and Williams are two of the best 3-4 defensive ends in the NFL. Simon is an emerging star at nose tackle. McLendon is a versatile player off the bench. Thomas showed promise as an undrafted rookie before an injury ended his season.

John Munson

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS

Starters: Lorenzo Mauldin, Jordan Jenkins
Position Grade: C-
Notable Backups: Freddie Bishop, Josh Martin, Corey Lemonier

Analysis:
The Jets were in on Nick Perry, but the price tag got just a bit high. Either way, they still don't have a difference maker at outside linebacker. Jordan Jenkins is more of an edge setter, and Mauldin hasn't progressed (to this point) as many hoped.

There are some intriguing players on the bench, though. Martin and Lemonier showed promise towards the end of last season. Bishop came on a bit, too, after playing a few years in the CFL. Still, no difference makers.

Al Bello

INSIDE LINEBACKERS

Starters: David Harris, Darron Lee
Position Grade: B
Notable Backup: Julian Stanford

Analysis:
David Harris isn't getting any younger, but he's still a damn good football player. Lee, last year's first-round pick, had an up-and-down rookie year, but should be a ton better in 2017. Big issue here is if Lee or Harris go down. There isn't much depth.

Thearon W. Henderson

Who's still available in free agency

Some intriguing names here.

CORNERBACKS

Starters: Buster Skrine, Juston Burris, Marcus Williams
Position Grade: F
Notable Backups: Darryl Roberts, Bryson Keeton

Analysis:
The Jets' secondary was terrible last year, and they haven't done anything to address it in free agency. Crazy thing? Maccagnan hasn't even made a run at any of the top cornerbacks on the market. This makes me think the Jets are targeting one in the NFL Draft. As things stand now, this unit is one of the worst in the NFL.

Andrew Mills

SAFETIES

Starters: Calvin Pryor (SS), Marcus Gilchrist (FS) [injured]
Position Grade: D
Notable Backups: Rontez Miles, Doug Middleton

Analysis:
The Jets made a serious run at safety Tony Jefferson, but he signed with the Ravens instead. Now they're left with just Pryor and Gilchrist. Pryor regressed quite a bit in 2016, and there's no guarantee Gilchrist plays this year. He tore his patellar tendon in December. There's a good chance the Jets address this position in the early rounds of the draft.

Andrew Mills

KICKER

Starter: Chandler Catanzaro
Position Grade: C
Notable Backup: Ross Martin

Analysis:
The Jets signed Catanzaro. If he returns to his 2015 form, when he made over 90 percent of his kicks, that's a good thing. If he plays as he did in 2016, when he made 75 percent, that's bad. Catanzaro did deal with three different long snappers throughout the year.

Kelvin Kuo

PUNTER

Starter: Lachlan Edwards
Position Grade: C
Notable Backup: N/A

Analysis:
Edwards had an up-and-down rookie year. He figures to be a bit better next season. He has a cannon for a leg. If he can get some consistency, he has the potential to be one of the NFL's best.

AP Photo

RETURNERS

Starter: Jalin Marshall (KR/PR)
Position Grade: D
Notable Backup: Marcus Williams (KR/PR), Devin Smith (KR), Eric Decker (PR)

Analysis:
Not good. Marshall left much, much to be desired as a returner his rookie year. The Jets brought running back Benny Cunningham in for a visit. Maybe they call him in a few weeks to iron out a deal? He'd give them a proven kick returner.

The Jets have signed some FAs and are looking at others.

Some players have already have been cut and not signed.

The Jets have 7 draft picks, and assume 6 are on 53.

What players who were on the 53 at the last half of the year will NOT be on the opening day 53?

  • S-Gilcrist could be on IR/PUP.  Miles should be upgraded-his time is up.  Very strong S draft-Martin could be done too.
  • CB-MacDougal's time is up.  Very strong CB draft.  Revis already out.   Macc is undoubtedly looking to build CB pursuant to the draft.
  • LB-Stanford and Catapano should be upgraded.  This is a strong EDGE draft, so players otherwise on the roster (Lemonier, Mauldin) could be out.
  • DL-Looking long-term, McClendon despite ability should be replaced with draft picks/Johnson/Simon/Thomas.  SR should be traded.
  • QB-The QBs have already been cleaned out, but there is a scenario where Petty is also waived (draft pick and veteran signed, although I would leave Petty with the draft pick)
  • RB-Wilds/Burks could be replaced by draft picks.  RB needs a youth injection.
  • TE-ASJ is suspended.  I think Bostick needs to stay for continuity.   We need a FA here.  Worst position on team.
  • WR-Decker could be on IR/PUP.  JM is suspended.  B. Marshall already gone.  They could add a draft pick or 2 and keep who we have.  Devin Smith gets another chance.
  • OL-This could be the last year of the Dakota Dozier Experiment.  2 OL already gone.  My guess is that this is not the year Qvale is replaced.

I think there are at least 8 new players on this team from where it stands today, and we will see many players who have been treading water for a few years to be finally moved on.

The suspensions and injuries could lead to up to 4 new players who get at least short-term stints.

If that does NOT happen, Mac is likely out of work.

http://www.metro.us/new-york/jets-todd-bowles-has-green-light-to-to-rebuild-the-team-from-the-ruins-source-says/zsJqco---sT5m1GdbHIlY/

A rebuilding year is fine for the New York Jets but it must be a year that shows progress, so says a team source familiar with the team’s situation following a 5-11 record last year.

With no Darrelle Revis, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brandon Marshall or Nick Mangold it appears that the Jets will undoubtedly be a younger, leaner team in 2017. They are clearly in rebuild mode, something that is evident from the jettisoning of talent from the roster in recent weeks. But the impetus from atop the organization isn’t an instant turn around as there seems to be a prevailing wind of slow, steady change.

A source close to the situation said that general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles have been given the green light “to rebuild the team from the ruins” but that it doesn’t mean that the team is expected to tank or on the flip side to make the playoffs in 2017.

“Ownership wants them to be aggressive but smart in free agency. There isn’t a ‘Playoff or bust’ mandate for Todd or Mike,” the source told Metro. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity to Metro but he has knowledge and is part of the discussions surrounding upper management.

“This team has to get younger and better, everyone knows that. It is also known that it takes time to get there. That 2015 season built some false hope that this team was further along then it really was. Then Darrelle has a bad year and gets banged up, Fitz regresses and Mo [Wilkerson] has injuries and really struggles. They have to blow it up earlier than expected.

The source, involved in player personnel issues, spoke to Metro late last week.

He said that the Jets willingness to be selective and coy during the opening few days of free agency points to a team wanting to set the sites straight “for the long haul and not a quick fix.”

“The team needs to show direction. It doesn’t have to be a winning season or a return to the playoffs,” the source said.

“But there’s no doubt that Macc (Maccagnan) needs a home run draft, something he hasn’t had yet. He needs to show that a future is coming in place. Ownership gets that, understands that a process is in place. He needs to be able to show that a turn-around is on the horizon. Doesn’t have to be playoffs or a winning record but that the team is ready to take another step.”
