I am guessing they are going to be trying Anunike at OLB and not DE.  They have enough DE and are thin/weak at OLB.  Kid was a high school TE and was a bit of a tweener for Denver.  Lots of injury issues, but intriguing kid.  He weighs in the 265-275 range which is more OLB size on this team, though the LBs have gotten lighter/faster (worse?) under Bowles.

Update on cap space to go along with the roster update.  From data on Spotrac and overthecap:

Salary Cap $167.1MM

Top 51 Cap Hit: $145.4MM

Dead Cap: $13.5MM

Total Offseason Cap Hit: $158.9MM

Cap Space $8.2MM

Considering we will need about $8MM to sign a draft class, and only top 51 salaries count against the cap in the offseason, we are going to have to do something to free up space -- maybe a Sheldon trade or Gilchrist release, but something has to be done to free up space.

I'd guess both.  Long term, it's better to trade Richardson now, save the $8M and get a 4th rather than let him play next year and hope for a comp pick. As for Gilchrist, the guy as under performing his contract before he tore his patella tendon in December. That injury takes a solid year to recover from.

Cutting Forte would save the Jets literally nothing, his contract this year is guaranteed.  McLendon is relatively cheap and despite all of the DL the Jets have, him and Simon are the only NTs, so he's doubtful to be going anywhere.  Plenty of other names that could easily be on the chopping block before him.

Looking at this roster, it's hard to see a scenario where we don't draft at TE, S, CB and OL. Add in late round flyers on LB and RB. And that's before we even address the sh*tstorm that's known as our QB position.

R1.  OJ Howard (TE)

R2.  Budda Baker (S)

R3.  Corn Elder (CB)

R3.  Roderick Johnson (OL)

There you go :)  The only thing different I would do is substitute an OLB for an OT.  I feel like our offensive line right now as it stands is decent enough to go into the season with.

I was going down the list of positions and thinking of posting "the Jets are thin at position x, they could definitely afford to draft someone there". I quickly realized I was going to say that for every position on the field. Defensive end is pretty stacked at the top but if they move Richardson they could use some additional depth.

Also the tight end depth chart is awful. Have said this elsewhere but with how good this class is and how awful the depth chart is I kind of think they should draft two. I think almost any of the top 10-12 TE's in this draft could compete for a week one starting spot with ASJ suspended (and arguably even over him).

The cost to sign the class is going to be closer to $5m I think too - anyone they sign in the draft is going to offset someone on the low end of the roster in the top 51 calc and I think the min salary is $465k - at least per OTC.

Cutting Forte wouldn't save the Jets anything it would actually cost them.

Skrine could be cut, but it would cost them 5 million against the deadcap so I dont think hes going anywhere till after the 2017 season.

However I do agree the Jets should cut Gilchrist since he won't cost much to cut and it would save them almost 7 million dollars.

They are really hedging their bets by not cutting Gilcrist yet.  They must still think he has something.  There are so many safeties in this draft.

Yeah, I don't know what they see in him because he's really not that good. I mean he has made some plays but doesn't do enough and is way too inconsistent to be getting paid what his salary is right now. So, hopefully he gets cut soon. Yeah, theres a lot of safeties in this draft which is another reason I feel they should cut him, which would be smart to get someone whose better, cheaper, and younger.

Maybe they're hanging on to him to not show their hand before Draft Day.

I'm starting to dislike Mac.  I think it's fair to say typical for him, much like holding on to Breno beyond what was reasonable, he'll probably hold on to Gilchrist way past his rightful expiration date.

I didn't like him holding onto Breno either, but I'm going to give Mac some more time before I judge him since he's still pretty new at being a gm. As for Gilchrist I don't think he will be on the team much longer just because of how much cap space he can save by cutting him.

Give him until after the draft.

Macc did a decent job paying low for assets (Fitz, BM) but seems to misvalue his assets on the sale side.   The SR resolution will make him look bad.

I agree that keeping Gilchrist at the current price would seem quite questionable, but there really is no incentive for Maccagnan to be in any rush to make a move with him.  For starters, as others already pointed out, creating holes on your team right before the draft never really makes any sense, as it can have a negative impact on your own reactions, and those of other teams.  Plus, with Gilchrist not due any bonuses, it will cost them no more to cut him in 4+ months as it would right now.  In between now and then, there's always the chance of a renegotiation if other current players or draft picks can't beat him out.  If they can, then I'm sure they'll gladly let him go, but not hate so much having had at least one veteran at the position throughout the offseason/camp.

There's also always issues that go along with trying to cut injured players.  Depending on the setup of his contract, it's possible that cutting a player when he's still hurt will ultimately cost the team more than if they wait for him to get healthy first.  Lots of different possibilities, so unless he ends up on the opening day roster under his current contract, plenty can still change.

This is the likely explanation for Gilcrist and Decker.

I think it is fair to say that there will be at least 7 new players on the Jets 53 on Opening Day in September.  Who is not on the roster, we will see.  The suspensions and injuries/IR can actually give the Jets a lot of flexibility.

7?  I count 5 right now.  Mandatory.

Patton, McCown, Beachem, K (either one) Clairborne are mandatory new bodies. The actual number should be upwards of 15.
