This is my favorite quote:

Intentional or not, the Jets didn't make observing Christian Hackenberg's first public throws since the 2016 preseason finale very easy. At the team's first organizes team activity of the year, Hackenberg worked on the far field away from the media. He threw primarily to scrub receivers, who were covered by scrub defenders.

called a lot of players scrubs lol

Perhaps we can start calling this reporter a scrub

Matt Forte criticizes Chan Gailey's 'odd' handling of Jets' backfield

Forte, who is entering his ninth season, got a bunch of action early last season -- 22 and 30 carries in the first two weeks. But he didn't always favor a run-heavy approach from Gailey.

"That's what we go [back] to about the rotation," Forte said. "Maybe it shouldn't have been like that. Sometimes, it was like we were running into bad looks. Like if we got a look where there's eight, nine in the box, why run into it, when there could be a better play when a guy is one-on-one outside? Let's take the best play available."

I could be off on this but I thought most QBs are given the freedom to check out of a run play call to then a pass play call should the D dictate it?

I was certainly wrong!!

This last bolded sentence is rocket science??? :(

Based on this article alone Chan Gailey was a big big problem last year!!!

Good Grief!!!!!!

We started a veteran QB, and the way I understand the NFL, it's his job to get the offense into the right play . Why else have a veteran QB starting . The problem wasn't the coordinator, it was the QBs . 2 didn't have the experience behind a rookie center and the other was a waste of time .

Lost in all this Hack microanalysis is that McCown actually looked way better.

- I mean, yeah, sure he's supposed to. He's been in the league a long time. I'd be shocked if he wasn't the best looking QB in practice.

why would the team push Hack to start when there's a better option on the roster?

- Is this for real? To get him on the field. To develop him. To play a kid with potential over a guy who's 38 and holding the fort. To try to take steps now to positively affect the future of the franchise.

why should Hack start if he's not better than McCown? Because of "hope?"

- Uh. Yes.  Or for his potential.  Or just to develop a young asset with better chance for future value rather than wasting development opportunity on a declining backup.

Hard to believe those things needed to be stated.

Exactly. If Hack shows even glimpses of ability he should start over mccown. It would be like drafting Andrew Luck and benching him because some washed up old vet looks better thanks to 15 years of NFL experience. Mccown's job is to help the kids and start in case Hack/Petty are dumpster fires. If he starts because he gives the Jets a better chance at 7 wins, then this franchise is doomed.

G-D did you just use Hack and Andrew Luck in the same sentence

Look you guys don't want to hear it but Hackenberg was on the 3rd team with the far field cause he sucks. He sucked last year and he sucked for several years prior to that. Hoping that he's better than he is doesn't change the depth chart. When (not if) mcCown starts you all will be calling for Bowles' head cause he didn't go with the "future" meanwhile the guy is terrible and never played a snap in the NFL and you all want him to start. For no real reason other than hope.
you all can believe what you want but when the season comes and McCown starts don't say you weren't warned.

Like the hope that Dewayne Robertson was a "bowling ball with butcher knives"? That kind of hope?

Some of these writers already have their narrative setup for this year.  Any slight mis-q by Hack will be blown out of portion. He could go 19-20 and all that will be mentioned is the 1 incomplete.

IF we start at the conclusion that Christian Hackenberg is awesome and move back from there, it all makes sense.

Who cares? It DOES NOT MATTER. Only way for the two guys to get better than McCown is practice reps and playing time and something called experience...something Bowles does not seemingly understand, robbing them of reps and time because of Fitzloser this year and now with McCown. God this whole thing is just dumb, led by the dumbest HC in the NFL.

Actually if you listen to the coaching it sounds like Hack is SUPPOSED to lead them a little far and they are working on turning the head and tracking the ball to catch it so they all might be EXCELLENT throws if that is the intent as it sounds

You have experienced the same misery as the rest of us. We all know the history, and our luck, so of course there is a good chance Hack will not pan out, but for now all we have is hope. To come to this forum and bash Hack before he has had a chance to fail is your typical SOJF whiner mentality.

Connor Hughes seems to think that Hack has outplayed Petty. That's not saying much, but it's still good news and a sign of improvement. Let's be real, the only hope we have for this season is the development of Hack or going 0-16 and drafting Darnold (Rosen etc..)

T0m is taking a "pragmatic" view.

Bit can be forgiven. He has waved the accolades for so many high Jet draft choices, out of sheer will of wanting them to be great, that it is understandable his reluctance to do that any more. His heart is in a good spot.

I call it the reverse Jinx. If I'm wrong the Jets are good. If I'm right well at least that's cold comfort of being right.

It's an emotional hedge. either way I derive some entertainment out of what will likely be a very unentertaining season.

That's how I deal with the team lately. Hoping for them to be good, with no reason to do so?  we've done that before.
