But Eddy got the edge by having the better catchphrase, "Pineiro is Dinero!"

"Sproing for Zeurlein", just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Ruth's Chris can do a "Sirloin for Zeulein" special.  Wellll.... let's be honest, Sizzler on 42nd

Jets cutting Eddy Pineiro as Greg Zuerlein wins kicking job

Justin Tasch

The Jets’ kicking competition is over.

Greg Zuerlein will be the Jets’ kicker with the team releasing Eddy Pineiro on Tuesday. The Jets signed the 34-year-old Zuerlein in March.

In Monday’s preseason win over the Falcons, Zuerlein made a 44-yard field goal and one extra point, while Pineiro went 2-for-2 on extra points and did not attempt a field goal.

Zuerlein spent the past two seasons with the Cowboys after eight years with the Rams. He converted 82.9 percent of his field goals in both of his seasons in Dallas.

Pineiro, 26, went 8-for-8 on field goals and 9-for-10 on extra points in five games last season for the Jets.

The Jets also released offensive linemen Caleb Benenoch and Isaiah Williams, linebacker Kai Nacua and safety Elijah Riley to get their roster down to the 80-player maximum.

New York Jets release Eddy Pineiro as veteran Greg Zuerlein wins kicking job

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Former All-Pro Greg Zuerlein has won the New York Jets' kicking competition, as the team released 2021 holdover Eddy Pineiro on Tuesday.

The Jets hope Zuerlein, released by the Dallas Cowboys in March, can provide stability at the position. They will open the season with a different kicker for the seventh straight year and overall have gone through eight kickers since losing Jason Myers to free agency after his All-Pro season in 2018.

Zuerlein, 34, signed a one-year, $2 million contract with New York in March. The Jets also had re-signed Pineiro (one year, $1.75 million) in March, with the hope of upgrading the competition and solving their perennial problem.

In the end, they opted for Zuerlein's experience over Pineiro's upside.

Pineiro kicked well in games, converting all eight of his field goal tries as a late-season addition in 2021, and following that up by converting his lone attempt (a 26-yarder) this preseason. He also was 2-for-2 on extra point tries. He recently missed some practices with back stiffness, but returned to kick in Monday night's preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Zuerlein didn't have many preseason opportunities, either -- 1-for-1 on field goals (a 44-yarder) and 4-for-4 on extra points. Practice performance weighed heavily in the decision, with special teams coordinator Brant Boyer calling it a "neck-and-neck" competition.

"Both of them plenty of leg strength, so it's going to be really interesting to see how it falls out," he said last week.

The one question with Zuerlein, an All-Pro for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017, is that he's never kicked for a cold-weather team. He has played in a dome (Cowboys and Rams in St. Louis) and in warm weather (Rams in Los Angeles). He missed six field goal attempts and six extra point tries last season, leading Dallas to release him.

The Jets will take a $700,000 cap hit for releasing Pineiro, who had a $700,000 guarantee.

That's pretty good.

Side note: "Ruth's Chris" is the stupidest name for a business I've ever seen.

Well, it was Chris', then Ruth bought them, and then Chris opened more!  So now Ruth had to call hers, hers...

i mean i get that piniero was perfect last year but it was 8 for 8 not 33 for 33 lol I havent kept score but I think Greg was more consistent in camp this year and had a bigger leg which certainly helps.  I was always afraid piniero was going to be short on all his attempts.

Probably a toss up at the end of the day and you go with the guy with higher upside. I'm fine with it.

That's what I humorously posited was the reason for the weird name when I first heard of it years ago, but then thought, nahhhhh that's way too silly.

But, holy schnikes, I just googled it and that's actually the reason, lol.

Undrafted

Yes, he's long been known as "Dicker the Kicker” but his final year at Texas showed he could be a triple threat: punter, kicker and kickoff specialist. If he can handle holding duties, too, he should beat out veteran Riley Dixon for a roster spot. Keep in mind that three of the last five All-Rookie punters were undrafted

Who could forget week 1 of 1999, tom tupa playing qb in his little punter shoes and slinging tds to keyshawn johnson.  An epic performance from a punter and probably something you will never see again.

This IMHO is a dreadfully stupid move. Pineiro is an accurate kicker and will at least provide solid kicking for extra points and most field goals I mean the guy is right down the middle most of the time from what I've seen. He also hit some 55 yarders in practice so why are we so worried about 55+ yard field goals when those happen in the single digits during the season ? Zeurlein Missed 7 extra points last year and those are going to kill you in close games just as much as missing a 55+ yarder which is still a low percentage kick even for a guy with a big leg and all that's involved with that type of kick can easily vary in success from year to year per kicker.

So I guess its back to biting our nails on 40- yard field goals like we did with the big legged Amendola cause you know BIG LEG

When you miss extra points at the amount Zeurlein did (7) that looks like lack of focus to me .

If Zuerlein is not the answer, Jets must get it right for next year and beyond when they are playoff ready.

Im not happy with Zuerlin.  But he did have surgery in the offseason.  The hope is that the injury was causing the erratic play and that will not be an issue anymore.

This. IMO the best kicker in Jets history was Pat Leahy. He definitely did not have a strong leg come up but he was almost automatic under 50. That's what you want. You could have Mann try for the 55 plus

Leahy was ok at the time but wouldn't last half a season today. 71% for his career. Had a couple seasons around 80% late in his career but was usually in the mid 60"s. Also missed 5 xp's in 9 games in 82, including one in the game in Miami that we lost by a point. If we won that game the afc championship would have been at Shea instead of in the mud in Miami

Just have to trust the Jets made the right move. It seems that Piñeiro has never missed a FG with the Jets (last season + 1 this preseason), while Piñeiro had a rough time with Dallas last season ..leading to his release.

must be about who kicked better in ‘practice’ over the last 2-3 weeks
