You got any of that invisible ink for Zach? Thought of him being the #2 QB next year makes me want to fast.

Don't think we will have to worry about that

They have a lot of the depth covered.  They need the prime players at tackle, guard, and wr.  I don’t think uzomah lasts beyond June first. They could keep rypien as back up or third string.  I believe saleh will not let Zach anywhere near his team.

If you add Nickle CB, K, P and QB2, you can say a team has 26 starters.   The Jets have 10 holes.  And this is a Super Bowl roster?

Well, they don't need a nickel.  I think his list was missing P, but if you are counting those guys in the "26 starters," the Jets don't have 10 holes.  By that count, they have 8.  HIs 10 include Backup RB and S?  Who gives a ****?  Any low-tier DT will be fine.  Jefferson and Thomas will be available easily.  So will Al Woods.  I expect them to sign fill-ins at S and DT easily and G is generally not too difficult to fill.  K and P are generally signed off the street.  It is pretty obvious that the only issues will be at T and WR.  Maybe G if you are a nervous type.

I am okay with bringing Davis back.  I'm not @pointman but I think they would do better with a different starter.  They should be able to bring back Clark  I thought that it was interesting that they didn't give a resreve futures deal to Trey Dean who ended up on the practice squad of the Chiefs (along with Mike Pennell) and got a ring.  They then signed him to a futures deal.  Not sure how that works.  If the Chiefs were poaching it would be a scumbag move to block it.  I would prefer a better QB2, but I think Rypien as a worst case it not bad at all.  I think they were sniffing around him when Rodgers first went down.  The Rams elevated him and they got stuck with Siemian.  When the Rams cut him they probably figured time was late, but they brought him in when they dumped Boyle.  Sure I'd rather have Howell, Brissett or Minshew, but this is not an oh sh*t we need some stud thing for me.

WR is important.  They need a weapon, but it won't matter if it comes from the draft or FA IMO and the whole idea they need like 3 new WRs is a bit farfetched to me.  One guy doing serious work will elevate the rest.  The OL is basically the whole deal to me.  IF fhey can get at least one legit T in and a solid G, I probably move AVT to RT and sign up the 5th year.  Makes more sense giving him that scratch for T and G is easier to find.  I sign a solid G and a mid-tier G and say Tyron Smith.  I would be okay with taking a flyer on Bakhtiari at that point.  With any luck, then they can get a more special dude in the draft.

It would have been nice to see the O with Rodgers.  Then right now we would know we were completely ****ed or not.  I mean we know, but you can't count them out completely until you see it.  IF things worked a bit we would know where we had to tool up.  Now we are back to praying the QB can make up for everyone else's sins.  That and maybe last a quarter or two.

With 1 week until the start of free agency, here are the 10 Spots the Jets need to fill most urgently:

  1. STARTING OFFENSIVE TACKLE *
If Vera-Tucker is going to play tackle and the plan is to draft a Tackle at #10, we can wait, but then we will need TWO starting caliber Guards
  2. STARTING OFFENSIVE GUARD **
If we keep Vera-Tucker at guard, we will need BOTH a starting caliber offensive guard and offensive tackle
We have some serviceable depth at OG and OT, so we don't need to sign a warm body veteran OL at this time.  Maybe after the draft
  3. STARTING SAFETY
We  have Tony Adams at 1 safety who is pretty solid, but will need another  starting-caliber veteran.  (Re-signing Ashtyn Davis would be a good idea)
  4. WIDE RECEIVER #2
Perhaps Allen Lazard will rebound if Rodgers is healthy next season, but we still need to sign a quality veteran to work in the mix.  Irvin Charles and Jason Brownlee might be good enough depth pieces that we don't need to sign a backup quality WR prior to the draft
  5. STARTING (OR ROTATIONAL) DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Quinnen Williams is great, but everyone else is hurt or a free agent.  We have decent backups like Marquis Spencer, Bruce Hector, and Tanzel Smart, plus Franklin Myers and Clemons can rotate, so the cupboard isn't bare, but we still need another top tier defensive tackle.  If Quinton Jefferson or Solomon Thomas can go 1 more year, we should re-sign 1 or both.
  6. STARTING PLACEKICKER
I'm confident we will re-sign Zuerlein, and we have Austin Seibert as Plan B, so this is a little less of a priority than it otherwise might be.  But we REALLY need to re-sign The Leg
  7. BACKUP QB
Assuming Wilson is gone and Rypien is the #3, we need a quality veteran QB #2.  Fortunately, those are pretty easy to find.
  8. RUNNING BACK #2
Breece Hall is great, Israel Abanikanda has some potential, and X Valladay is an interesting prospect, but we need a good sold Veteran RB who can take some carries away from Hall, do some pass blocking, and carry the load if, God Forbid, Hall is hurt for an extended time.  Again, serviceable veteran backup RBs are a dime a dozen
  9. BACKUP LINEBACKER
CJ Mosley and Quincy Williams are awesome! Jamien Sherwood looked pretty good last season.  Zaire Barnes showed potential,  Chazz Surratt and Sam Equaveon are not bad veteran backups.  But, I'd still feel better if we had another veteran FA LB to start the season
  10. BACKUP SAFETY
Davis looked pretty good last year.  Ideally, we should re-sign him.  Jarrick Bernard-Converse is the only S other than Adams under contract.  At some point we are going to have to sign and/or draft 3 safeties.

WAIT, WHAT ABOUT TIGHT END?

Conklin had a great year, Ruckert is getting better, Uzomah can contribute if he's healthy.  I don't think TE is a priority right now

Well done Sarge and i appreciate the time you put into your posts.  1 additional position that you dont mention that concerns me is backup CB.  I love our 2 starting CB's and our nickel but we have zero depth if any of these guys were to miss time.

Great post.  I was trying to be nice and add to the denominator.

I was at 10/26 holes.  The alternative is 8/25.  It’s close.

They really need 2 starting OT and a starting G before even thinking about AVT at the other G position, where they could also use additional quality depth behind him for insurance, after back-to-back years of him not making it through even half the season.  Tippman is pretty much the only guy on the unit they can really feel locked into at this point.

As much as the draft can play a factor eventually, you at least need guys who are capable of competing for the job at each spot.  Otherwise, a team locking themselves into a position they are desperate for a day 1 starter is always a terrible approach to the draft.  It's the quickest way to have any combination of teams jumping you in the draft, reaching for a player, and/or forcing a player into the lineup before they're ready, all things this team have been extremely guilty of in the very recent past.

1) Starting LT

2) Starting RT

3) Starting LG

4) Backup LT

5) Backup RT

6) Backup LG

7) Starting/Backup C

8. Backup RG

9) WR1/2

10 Backup QB

I'm not sure about 9 and 10 yet.  Those could be luxury picks that leave us a little thin on the OL.

Need three starters on the OL, right?

My guess is they sign a veteran tackle, veteran guard, and McGovern on the cheap. Start Tippmann off at guard and AVT at RT with the flexibility to shuffle things around based on who they draft and how things go.

And I'd further guess versatility will be prized among the potential OL selections in the draft. Guys like Troy Fautanu, Taliese Fuaga, Jordan Morgan, and Dominick Puni who maybe ideally project to guard but also have a chance to stick at tackle. Will make it easier for them to shuffle a little early and try to find the best five - and I also think those guys will come a little cheaper because they aren't absolute slam dunk tackles.

I do think that Bakhtiari fell into a similar bucket coming out so that might be an interesting mentorship situation if they sign him and draft someone like that - although he had good arm length, was just short. Kind of like Fautanu.
