The Official Jets On Hard Knocks Thread

I'm glad you posted this, because I was going to bring it up, because there's a few interesting things to take from this. First off, with the Jets having listed 5 RBs, it sounds like they're planning on keeping both Richardson and Conner at FB, which kind of makes me happy. Unless TRich chooses to retire, I would really hate to see him off of this team.

I can't see any way that Laury is a "bubble player" though, despite what they were saying. He was signed as a UFA is a top special teams player plus a depth player at ILB. I would bet he's the fourth guy accounted for in that 4 ILBs number.

Also have to notice that they specifically defined 3 QBs, which they've carried 4 in each of the last two seasons. Ainge's issues easily cost him a roster spot and at this point it's obviously decision time between Clemens and O'Connell and unless someone offers something in a trade for Clemens, he's going to be the guy who sticks.

Four TEs is another number I found interesting as well. If that stays true, it certainly helps the chances of guys like Mulligan and Cumberland, considering Keller and Hartsock are the only guys at the position who are locks to make it.

Plus I have to be honest, with two spots still left open in the end, I'm really rooting for Woodhead to make the team again. He just does so much and continues to look better each year. He can play multiple positions on offense and on ST. Plus, did you see that hit he laid on that blocker on special teams? Holy crap, that was impressive for a little guy.

Good analysis

Somebody here has got to be able to post a pic of that. SFJ I dont like Hard Knocks its a distraction and it portrays our team in ways I dont like. So far this season this team isnt clicking for some odd reason.

We'll see this week VeeJay-3rd PS game is most indicative of real play

Next to the team’s official depth chart, Tannenbaum scrawled out the number of players they plan to keep at each position, with the caveat they can adjust for special teams.

Offense (25 players):

  • Three quarterbacks
  • Five running backs
  • Five wide receivers (including Santonio Holmes)
  • Four tight ends
  • Eight offensive linemen

Defense (23 players):

  • Six defensive linemen
  • Four outside linebackers
  • Four inside linebackers
  • Five cornerbacks (I think because I couldn’t make out the abbreviation)
  • Four safeties (I think for the same reason)

Add a kicker, punter and long-snapper, and that’s 51 players, leaving two special-teams spots for everybody else to fight over.

QB Sanchez, Brunell, Clemens

RB Greene, Tomlinson, McKnight, Richardson, Conner

WR Holmes (Coles), Edwards, Cotchery, Smith, Clowney

TE Keller, Hartsock, Mulligan, Cumberland

OL Ferguson, Slauson, Mangold, Moore, Woody, Hunter, Turner, Ducasse

DL Ellis, Jenkins, Pouha, Gholston, DeVito, Kroul

OLB Thomas, Pace, Taylor, Westerman

ILB Scott, Harris, Cummings, Laury

CB Cromartie, Wilson, Lowery, Coleman, Cole

S Pool, Leonhard, Smith, Ihedigbo

K Folk

P Weatherford

LS Purdum

I figure the five corners didn't account for Revis since four tight ends and Hunter but no Cole wouldn't make sense, so there's really only one spot. Probably Woodhead over Washington and Allison on versatility, but maybe Reamer or Mauga.

Yeah. I don't see how Mulligan is on the bubble if they are keeping 4 TEs. They only have 4 TEs in camp. I'd have expected them to carry three. IMO 4 TEs and 2 FBs is excessive and I might even prefer Davis to the loser of the Cumberland Mulligan battle. I can see 4 TEs if it's counting the LS(Dearth), but Purdum was a college QB and is nothing but a dedicated LS. I'd still probably feel better about things if Conner is 100% ready and Richardson retires because I like a lot of the RB depth.

As you said, same with Laury. There aren't that many ILBs on the team and Mauga and Satele have hardly played due to injuries. They also played Westerman there some last year, so maybe they'd keep another OLB? I don't know.

I know Jimmy likes Taylor and Woodhead. I haven't seen much Taylor, but I like what I've heard about both. They seem a little duplicative. Especially with McKnight around. I can't imagine keeping both, but one or the other is a good bet.

It also seems like Mike Westhoff likes Taylor Dom-and he needs a return guy-he's really re-built those ST's units with young and hungry players-very different from last year

I don't see how Taylor makes it. He's not our best returner and even if he was he doesn't do anything else. Anybody we carry just for special teams has to be able to cover.

True, but Taylor could be a serious difference-maker on kick returns.

Weshoff always works magic with undersized speedsters (see: Chad Morton, Leon Washington).

he's also a receiver Aten and more valuable than Clowney at this point BECAUSE of his special teams roles

Roles? As in plural? Taylor just returns. Clowney can cover and gun too and he's obviously a better receiver. The distinction is pretty academic because the difference between the two is just that Clowney is going to be one of the perpetual inactives and Taylor will be on the practice squad.

We have a million returners and there's little evidence that Taylor is better than any of them, let alone better than all of them, let alone better than all of them by a sufficient margin to justify carrying him just to return. We have at least a dozen guys who can return and they all do other stuff. The special teams slots are for guys who cover kicks and, especially since it looks like Smith is only going to play upback, gun on punts.

He's the top kick returner thus far in the preseason. And did you seem some of those moves against the Giants?

We'll see what happens.

Westy seems to really like the kid.

I think it'll all depend on if he can contribute to the coverage unit. Westhoff said it himself, if he wants to make this team he has to be contribute on all of the ST units.

On the show, Westoff was talking to Taylor telling him he could be the Izzo of the offense. That he wants him to make all the special teams, and that he thinks he can do it.

But then in the game footage, Westoff was obviously unhappy with his return skills - which have to be the guy's #1 priority. He's in a battle with Clowney, and probably the bottom of the RB depth chart for one of those specialist jobs. McKnight's return didn't help lil' LT's case.

Westoff may like Taylor, but he BENCHED Taylor in the Carolina game. On HK they showed him get benched and McKnight took over.

So I don't know why people think he's making the team

Remember when you told me you cant believe what you see on the show because its edited, staged, yadayada when I was talking about the model being a little homo....well...

I say that Coles getting cut will be on the show tonight. Can't see how they don't devote a few minutes to him and show the conversation...

What do you think?

That's a safe bet Max, considering every cut so far since Hard Knocks has started has been covered - O'Connell & whoever else has been released will probably be covered as well.

I'd like to see the conversation where Tanny and Ryan tell Clemens to take a pay cut or pack his bags.

The release of a few WR's puts the spotlight on the last two bubble guys: Clowney and Taylor.

How they're planning to fill the Pace void should also be a hot topic.

This ep is supposed to focus on Schotty.

Why does he have a southern accent? Is it fake or not? It seems to me that lots of northern fubaw coaches try to talk suthron like. Josh McDaniels does it, Madden did it a little bit. I have nothing against the south, but if your not from there don't talk like a retard.

not sure, but really hope they do at least a little spot on Cotchery. So underrated.

Ive been telling my wife the same damn thing, they need to focus a bit on the Vets on the team, Ellis, Cotch, Harris..."Real" Jets..

All this fluff stuff is cute, but for us Jet fans I wanna know a bit more about our core players.
