HessStation
Great news imo. I think it was important that the players who deserved to stay, did. If I had to cut one though, it woudl be Clowney.

But he'd be PS'ed instantly and after embarassing him on national tv he's earned that money. It's always a good sign if the players/team choose to haze someone it means they care. Guys who get cut no one even wastes the Icy hot. had the Jets cut Brian Jackson I think small chance he gets picked up on preseason film. he was darn good with that 2nd or 3rd defense. but guaranteeing his salary for the season means they can work out a wink/nod deal in case revis comes back that he won't bolt. bitonti
Not so sure about that, could just as easy be Cole imo. m cole is not below brian jackson on the depth chart... it could be him but prob not. Drew Coleman is also not great and if they sign revis, coleman has the least upside. It's a pick em grab bag at the bottom of the cb depth chart. 3 or 4 crappy players. the fact that lowery is above all these guys puts some perspective on their cb depth situation. DMaynard
I got nothing against Woodhead. I like him. But I love how everyone falls in love with the latest Rudy based on some pre-season games and yet the dreadlocks wearing/silly twittering Clowney is still despised by all. Clowney, who is mocked as a pre-season HOFer with long TDs quietly showed nice underneath ability Thursday night with several POSSESSION catches (something he is not supposed to be able to do)and a reverse for first downs. Oh, he had one penalty for showing extra effort on a block. That is what people noticed. It may not happen until Schotty leaves, but this guy is going to make it. And if not with the Jets, then somewhere else.
Jetsfan80
Wow. Carrying way too many offensive players, not enough defense. 6 WR, 6 RB/FB, 4 TE? Wow!!! Our second team defensed sucked. Not many of those players were worth making the team. Our offense is where we're struggling, so I'm fine with us having as many options as possible. One of those offensive players will be cut as soon as Santonio Holmes comes back, and I could see Tony Richardson getting cut if Conner establishes himself as the starting FB. Woodhead has filled in nicely last year during the regular season when he was called upon. He's also done well this pre-season. The guy shows nothing but heart and a hard work ethic and shown he has some ability. Clowney has done well, but he's not living up to expectations. Bruce Banner
I thought the plan was to convert Brian Jackson into a safety. What happened with that? Also, having The Clown on the team is bad luck. He's king of twitter and when you give him playing time he can't even stay inbounds.

He's king of twitter and when you give him playing time he can't even stay inbounds. The Clown is on the team for one reason. He was clearly the best of the rest. Guy is a potential explosive deep threat on every play. So far he has done nothing with that talent. Not during the season at least. IMO he gets a 1 week audition in the Ravens game. He must make a big play, or Coles gets his spot. Who knows TJ may get his spot before that. I hope the kid makes some big plays. I like him. Think he can be a player. Don't take this the wrong way, because the anger isn't directed at you, but how many f***ing safeties do we need on this team? First it was Donovan Warren that was being converted to safety. Then it was Dwight Lowery. Then it was Brian Jackson. What the hell? We have four safeties. Jim Leonhard, Brodney Pool, Eric Smith, and James Ihedigbo. That's plenty of depth at the position. What we DON'T have is a lot of depth at corner. With Revis likely not playing this year, we have Cromartie, Wilson, Lowery, Coleman, Cole and Jackson, and only two of those can pass as a decent NFL corner. I think its because the track record of developing UDFAs into quality safeties and LBers is there. Not just for this team but league wide. At cornerback you need measurable speed and the late round guys rarely become anything special. Bringing in a bunch of UDFA safeties and LBers each year and hoping to get the next James Harrison is a sound tactic. There are lots of stats on this, CB is one of the positions where draft position matters the most.

Cotch, Edwards, Smith, Clowney. Holmes won't count until week 5. That seems low but we have 4 TEs, at least two of which are pass-catchers we can use in spread sets. In this case, I think it is the "little guy making it in a big man's game" for the attraction to Woodhead. I've never understood the hate toward Clowney. All I am trying to do is point out the mob mentality about how certain players become fan favorites and others become demons. Clowney tore it up for two pre-seasons in a row and people mocked him becuase it was the pre-season. And when the coaches rarely give him a chance in the regular season, he shows ability. Woodhead comes along, does well in pre-season, and he becomes a fan favorite and an underdog story because of his "heart". Clowney does not have a heart? For awhile the myth perpetuated by some geniuses was Clowney had bad hands. Except he caught just about everything thrown at him. Then it was he was only good for the fly pattern. Then he showed he could make possession catches. The truth is he has two weaknesses. He has trouble getting off the line against press coverage and he sometimes does not finish routes. Two very coachable problems. I could not care less what color either one is. I just find it strange the way most fans follow the mob, for whatever reason. For me, it is simple. We have two fringe players who have some potential. One is 5'7" and the other runs a 4.3 forty. I am rooting for the 4.3 guy, I don't care what he tweets or what color either one is. Both made it this far, I assume both have "heart".

Back to the topic at hand. So what that he runs a 4.3 forty. If he doesn't use it to do well then it wouldn't matter if he ran a 4 flat. you got to use what God gave you. Woodhead does it better in preseason and the regular season. And it's always easier to root for the little guy. It's a good story about heart. slats
Re: Clowney vs. Woodhead They're both scrubs. Guaranteed the Jets have put in waiver claims on a WR or two overnight. We'll see what happens there. After that, these guys are both at risk of getting bumped off the roster at any time. Could be as soon as the second week of the year when they look to bring in Coles, or week 5 when Holmes comes back. Or they could decide at any time that a player on the practice squad deserves a promotion at their expense. I think the thing with these two players is that Woodhead is seen as an overachiever, and Clowney is seen as an underachiever. Right or wrong, that's the perception. Clowney has greater natural gifts that he does less with. That could very well be a black/white thing -either consciously or unconsciously- for fans. I'm sure it's an element for some. For me, I see Woodhead doing more of the little things. He may not be great at anything, but he's willing to do anything and that goes a long way. He could fill in at RB or WR in a pinch. Clowney seems like a one-trick pony, a downfield threat as a WR and nothing more. Maybe once the Jets cut ties with him he'll become someone else's Terrance Mathis - who knows? But the Jets could really use a third WR here, and I just don't see this guy stepping up to the plate.
