Mariota

If we are bad enough to be within striking distance for this kid, I think we have to do whatever it takes to draft him.

Looking at the REALLY bad teams so far, only Tampa Bay and St. Louis would be in a position to take him as the Raiders, Jags, Vikings already have their franchise QB's. I would be all for trading up, if we were able, to grab him. There is no one, two or three high draft picks that we could keep that can compensate for QB mediocrity, but a great QB can hide many warts. Given our salary cap situation, we have a little bit of a luxury in terms of being able to secure talent through free agency.

We talk about looking at the long term and not selling out to win now when we talk about Idzik and his philosophy, well, we need to secure the future of the franchise. A QB like this is a huge step toward that. We haven't had one since I've been a fan, and that's a long time. Not O'Brien, Testaverde for one year, etc. brings the upside and security that a kid like this can, potentially.

I want a franchise QB. I'm tired.

The Jets would really, really have to tank to get on top of the Bucs, Raiders, St Louis, etc.

The Jets have the talent level of a 6-8 win team. Besides, even when they should be tanking, they always win meaningless games at the end of seasons to get those warm fuzzy feelings that end up giving the team significantly worse draft picks.

We all want a franchise QB. We need a franchise worried about winning football games first though. The team is a mess...and a franchise QB simply walking through that door is not the silver bullet.

Are you saying a franchise QB is not important? Can you name one team that has had one that has not turned their fortunes around? I"m talking a guy in the Luck, Manning, Aikman, Brady, Brees mold. Whether you think Mariota can be at that level is another issue, but you can't say that having a guy like this doesn't hide MANY flaws on your roster.

Suck for Mariota, and NFL level talent with our cap space? I'm good with that. Though another rookie QB waiting period will put us 4 years from seeing anything.

If we were going to burn draft picks this year, should have done it for ton Savage or garrapolo

Geno actually is hiding flaws on this roster. He's being forced to hand the ball to a guy who is awful and is still managing to throw the ball down the field to scrubs. His mistakes are mental. He's getting the best out of what he's working with though....Sanchez you couldnt say that about.

When Luck's asked to throw the ball 40 times his throwing picks too...and he's completing under 60% of his passes.

I think the real issue is that you can't hand this staff another young QB.

Yep.  When Kerley and Decker are on the field he shows glimpses of at least average QB in him.  Which these days can make you a franchise guy who makes a lot of money.

I don't think coaching staffs do what you think they do. There's not an alternate universe where Geno is awesome because he has a better QB coach.

I'm going to type a statement here and you tell me if you agree with it or not:

The only significant difference between Herm Edwards and Bill Walsh is that Bill Walsh lucked into Joe Montana.

I don't agree with that but the problem is Bill Walsh isn't waiting around for Woody to call him up. Or "the next Bill Walsh" whoever that is.

Remember when you and others said no one could be worse than Schotty? and then Sparano was actually much worse than Schotty.

There's a very real chance whoever the next head coach of the Jets will be worse than Rex. Fact is, Rex is one of the few above average parts of this team right now.

When you think about it, no team should ever fire a head coach.

Round and round we go. Wheeeeeeeeee

Right. That is exactly what the problem has been. The fact that we have fired a lot of bad coaches. Not that we hired them, but that we fired them.

Considering he hasn't had a winning season since 2010, neither has keeping Rex.

Coaches coach, players play. Give Bellichek this dumpster fire of a roster and see how he does with it. I do agree coaching can be improved upon but this isn't a situation where the roster is great and talented and the coaches aren't getting enough out of them.

This is a situation where they are the cheapest roster in all of football and if you were a fan of another team, there's like 4 guys you might want playing for your team. And they are all linemen.

I think most can agree that Walsh was an innovator and clearly ahead of his time.

The only difference between Bill Belichick and Rex Ryan is Tom Brady would be harder to dispute

Great! So how many more years should we give Rex? Another 6?
