ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- The NFL will suspend Buffalo Bills linebacker IK Enemkpali for the first four games of the season for punching and breaking the jaw of New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith, a person familiar with the decision has told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Thursday because the NFL isn't expected to announce the suspension until Friday.

Enemkpali will be suspended without pay for violating the league's personal conduct policy following the altercation that took place in the Jets locker room on Aug. 11.

A second-year player, Enemkpali was immediately released and claimed by the Bills a day later. He appeared in three Bills preseason games before being cut on Sept. 4. Buffalo then signed him to its practice squad on Monday.

Smith is expected to miss at least the first four games of the season recovering from the injury. He has no plans to file charges against Enemkpali.

How many games was Steve Smith suspended for? How about that fist fight I think in Washington where teammates punched each other? Has a player ever been suspended 4 games for punching a teammate? If not he should challenge it.

Since when does the NFL suspend players for stuff that happened with in the team? And he's on the practice squad anyway.

Probably because, typically, the team punishes the player internally but still keeps him on the roster.  Similar to when the Panthers sent Steve Smith home in 2008 for punching Ken Lucas.  But since he was cut and signed elsewhere, he never really got punished.  The NFL can't exactly afford to have guys knocking out "starting" QB's with all the other problems they're dealing with.

But of course, because of the Brady decision, IK can legitimately fight this.

First, he'll lose 4 weeks money. Might not be a big deal, but it's something.

Second, why have a guy on your practice squad that can't practice? Bills might cut him, at least for the four weeks of his suspension.

Judge Berman: "IK didn't know he'd be punished, because there was no precedent set for face punching dooshy twat QBs, therefore he shouldn't be punished."

Those rules only apply to the Patriots.  There's a double standard in the NFL.  Standard #1 for the Patriots - Standard #2 - for the rest of the NFL.  It's sickening

We should raise money to help out IK. Thanks buddy. Sorry to hear your suspension.

Buffalo Bills Fan here.  IK deserves the suspension.  One can't punch someone in the face  and get away with it IMO.  I am one who wasn't happy about this player coming to Buffalo.

So if a player hits a man and breaks his jaw at a bar he can get suspended, but if he hits a defenseless player in a lockeroom he shouldn't be suspended because it happened "with in the team"? That makes no sense. This wasn't an on-field fight. IK is lucky Geno didn't press charges.

Interesting possibility here.  If I'm not mistaken, a team must keep a player on the 53 for four weeks after he is claimed off a PS.  Could a team claim him now, add him to the roster, then get the 4 week roster exemption for the time he's suspended?

Also I know people are kidding about him taking it to court based on the Brady decision, but this would be a real option if he was a higher profile player.  The league has openly turned its back on prior incidents of "in house" locker room fights.  What makes this different?  Smith is a QB?  Isn't that discriminatory?

I could easily see the court throwing this out because there is no established, written league rule on defending yourself from an assault, and what   the guide lines are for such a suspension.  This would actually be interesting as the players who witnessed the altercation would have to testify , under oath, as to what actually happened.

It happens all the time. IK apparently has a good punch.

As another poster already stated. IK was cut then picked up the team didn't suspend him so the NFL stepped in.
