Btw, the Steelers draft makes them a contender as of today (if they weren't already). They didn't get the help at corner, but adding DeCastro and Ta'Amu is filthy, and if Mike Adams can play RT at all, that line will kill you and eat you.

Also liked the Giants draft. Adding Wilson and Randle to that offense is almost unfair. Manningham will be remembered for that Super Bowl grab, but he sucked otherwise and led the team in boneheaded route running mistakes. Randle taking his snaps is pretty unruly. Then they get the pothead corner in the late third, who allegedly had early-second-round talent.

Problem I have is we have no idea who is really making the decisions on draft day. Tannebaum is an accountant/attorney, not a talent evaluator. Bradway is the chief of scouting, and his big accomplishment is usually dumping good OL talent to overpay negligible Damien Robinsons, Curtis Conways and Chester McGlocktons and then wondering why his OL sucks and his QB and backs are getting hurt. Bradway also is still her probably because it's geaographically good and well-paying. Who in sucha job volunteers for demotion? It's unprecedented. Joey Clinkscale has been looking to go elsewhere forever, thoguh at a loss what any other team sees in him. And we have an HC who must have some input, but should he and how much? Now maybe other teams have the similar situations, and even the teams with real scouts as GMs screw the pooch.

Who among this colllection of ne'er dowells made these calls?

You get the sense that if the Jets scrapped their scouting department and bought a hot sheet guide form Mike Mayock or Mel Kiper to day before it would be no better. And they wouldn't have to pay these guys anything. Practically this actually goes on in the NHL(a cnetral scouting database covering juniors, colleges and Europe), so it's not the craziest idea.

But is Jerry Reese running things like this?

Agreed. Way too many cooks in that kitchen. I'm a socialist at heart, but the War Room has to have one guy above all calling the shots. The Jets let the special teams coach pick players, the DC pick players, the OC pick players, the freaking owner pick players and the end result is a mish-mosh roster with no depth, resulting in having to plug holes with overpriced FAs.

Really...

Coples is actually a far greater talent than Shaun coming out. His floor is Ellis. His ceiling is Peppers. Even at his floor, I'd take it. We sorely missed Ellis last year.

Hill ran a 4.3. Faster than Braylon. And he makes the acrobatic catches. Plus his knees are good.

Vilma's Combine:

  • 4.54 40 Yard Dash
  • 37 Inch Vertical
  • 23 Bench Reps
  • 6.67 Three-Cone Drill
  • 4.20 Short Shuttle
  • 10-foot-1 Broad Jump

Demario Davis's Combine:

  • 4.53 40 Yard Dash
  • 38.5 Inch Vertical
  • 32 Bench Reps
  • 7.19 Three-Cone Drill
  • 4.28 Short Shuttle
  • 10-foot-4 Broad Jump

When we had Vilma, he was really fast at getting to the pile and standing around. This kid hits like Mo Lewis. Watch the tape.

Not so much of a stretch, huh?

The floor is Ellis? Thats another awful big statement. College is college, the NFL is a whole other animal. I hope you're right, but I think you're statement is a bit premature. Hopefully he isn't high when he is on the field like he was at Radio City Music Hall.

I graded a B. I trust Rex on Coples but I simply cant get over the Hill pick up. A Georgia Tech fan responded to a comment that I had on youtube and he simply stated that he's a huge GT fan but he even agrees that the Jets should have taken Jeffery. He was stating how Hill has a history of dropping passes.

Anyway, my "B" grade comes in to play because of the back end of our draft. I really like our pick ups in the 6th and 7th rounds. I can see Ganaway, Bush, Griffin, Allen and White all making the cut. Though the weakest out of the bunch I believe is Bush. Allen looks like a ball hawk, White runs very tight routes and can put his shoulder down, Ganaway may have been overlooked, and Griffin will add depth to our at times "terrible" offensive line.

Thats quite impressive I must say.

The Steelers are a contender as long as Roethlisberger is upright. Everything else they do is window-dressing.

Don't you guys see? Any pot-smoker drafted by the Jets has serious character issues. Any pot-smoker drafted by the Giants is a future All-Pro that everyone else was just too dumb to recognize.

Most of the JN members down on this draft use this as their argument "Why'd they take a WR in the 2nd??? If we want to G&P we need a RT and RB!!!" If that happened we would just announce to the NFL that were running the 2010 Broncos option offense. I liked Barron if he was there at 16 but I think a pass rusher was more valuable to the defense. Safety is a need and if Taylor was there in the third I thought hed be the pick. However, there are a lot of safeties in FA out there to replace Smith then there are elite pass rushers who can consistently put pressure on the QB, I'm glad Coples was the pick. By the way if you had a choice between Demario Davis and Zach Brown who would you take?

rememeber when tebow came in and they made up a whole new offense to suit him, in just one week they had a better offense than Shottys that took like 15 years to make...the WR btw should keep defense honest or give us easy points, he will be a deep threat..

I'm not giving it any grade, because I think giving grades at this point is kinda silly. The Jets did what I feel a team should do in the draft: they targeted best available players early and focused more on positions late. Overall, they infused the team with some much needed speed across the board.

Went big boner with a C. I'm expecting little from Coples, but Hill might develop in three years under a different coach with a new QB. I like the young blood at safety, and Ganaway means we're not married to keeping McPuke on the roster.

You make being a Jet fan fun. :)

The Daily News has John Conner as the potential odd man out, with Greene and Ganaway listed as "A" backs, and Powell and McKnight listed as "B" backs. Makes sense if you view the "B" category as pass catchers. Also means that Ganaway is here to pressure Greene more than anyone else.

I'm with the masses trusting Rex on Coples. He worked him out personally, and made a point that he wouldn't be changing his position - which I believe is key. The LB they took played LB in college. They went out of their way to avoid and DE/OLB transitions.

Hill is taylor made for this offense. Arguably the best blocking WR in the draft, he comes from a running program and will be content to continue in that role. When Sparano isn't running the football he wants to take shots deep, which is where Hill will excel even as a rookie. The Jets need speed to stretch the field and get the safeties out of the box. Jeffery wasn't going to do that. Jeffery's production was impressive, but Hill has the higher upside as a pro.

As for the drops, we'll see. When a guy is only targeted a couple times a game, any drops become that much more glaring.

Rex would whack Conner? I thought that was the hand-selected crown jewel of his first draft?

too many boom or bust type players. If the picks pan out easy a, otherwise we wasted another year to develop depth and starting players. We didn't get a starting o line to replace wayne or safety position. I think hill was an awesome pick that is going to help out the wildcat tebow package.

I give it an A.We took a player in the first who's upside is a faster Julius Peppers.I think Rex excels at developing Defensive line talent and this guy is loaded with talent.

Hill in the second I think is gonna be looked back upon as a steal because I also believe he was the most talented receiver in this years draft and is a very good run blocker which fits what the Jets want to do on offense while also giving us the deep threat at wideout we've desperately needed the last few years. This guy is a burner and a much better receiver than most are giving him credit for.He didn't have a lot of catches but he did have some spectacular catches!!

Round three we got a linebacker who can cover and play about any postion in any scheme...he is the real deal.He also has excellent speed for the position which is something the Jets really needed to upgrade. He will lay the wood too!He reminds me of a faster younger Bart Scott.

The rest of the draft we got guys that fit what the Jets want to do this year.....Big,physical 240lb running back to batter opposing defenses....A huge G/T that can road grade with the best of them....and two safeties who can cover TE's.......and a very productive wide receiver near the end.

I'm very happy with this draft..I think the Jets nailed this one and I'm excited to see these players added to our already good team.Definite B+ but I believe it's an A after all is said and done.

Boston Globe's analysis of The Jets draft

Jets: Rex Ryan bet big that North Carolina end Quinton Coples can shake off the bad tape he showed as a senior and deliver on his immense talent at 6-6 and 284 pounds with 4.78 speed. Scouts question whether he wants it bad enough. If Ryan can’t get the best out of Coples, Ryan could be out of a job after this season. The Jets added Georgia Tech receiver Stephen Hill, who blazed 4.38 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the scouting combine. But are quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow good enough to get the ball to Hill, Santonio Holmes, Dustin Keller, and Jeremy Kerley? The better question is, can the Jets give those quarterbacks enough time to distribute the ball? The Jets have not addressed big weaknesses at left guard (Matt Slauson) and right tackle (Wayne Hunter). They expect to improve from within.

I loathe everything Boston related

Since so many are comparing him to Braylon, might as well...

So did Braylon when he got here and through his first year. Remember his last year, when he had one drop? I heard Hill's drops explained as "nerve drops," which was really Braylons issue. Point being, it's a fixable issue. I don't love the Hill pick, but the GT fan obviously never saw Alshon play. He won't be a big time WR at the next level, but my opinion's worth no more than his.

I did really like Ganaway and Allen. Agree with Slats that Griffin screams practice squad to me. Get him in the weight room for a year, working with pro strength/cond. coaches, and he may end up surprising...who knows.

Noticed the Jets still don't have an NFl-caliber TE who can a. block and b. catch passes over the middle. Keller is basically a WR who lines up at TE. Again can anyone explain how this 'ground and pound" offense works without a beast to block and then get a dump off to in traffic? Keller doesn't do that. Hopefully all the drafted OL depth works. But if the idea is to have Dukie-asse and Hunter compete to see who can block worse and not having a real blockiing TE, the QB, whomever he is, is gonna get killed.

They could've signed Kenny Boss, but...can anyone explain their total lack of interest a a FA who was exactly what their offense needs?

I'm with Slats as far as grading it. We don't even know how some of these guys will be used. The genius in the Post graded them a D+ because they didn't have the "game changing draft Tannenbaum needed" and went "boom or bust". Seems to be a contradiction to me. If those guys boom it's a game changing draft. I am not a big fan of drafting for need and even if you do, you won't fill every need. People want to complain about not filling the RT spot, but after the first 3 rounds you aren't getting anybody that is a sure thing. I'd rather fill that spot with a FA or trade. I assume there will be some cuts coming around the league.

As for a blocking TE, I am not a fan of burning a pick on one of those.

You people are cutting Connor now for a rookie RB? Connor is one of the players that is much better suited to Sparano's system than Schottenheimer's. Schotty didn't even have a true FB on the team for a few years. This smashmouth sh*t has been a Rex thing. Gannaway is going to push McKnight and Greene? How about Powell? Powell was horrible last year. He fumbled constantly and when he did run the ball he looked scared to fumble. Freeman McNeill kept saying it while we watched the game at that JetNation/AMEx event. Powell is afraid to fumble and you can't run like that. Sure it's only his first year and he can pan out, but so far Powell has been worse at RB than Ducasse has been at OLine.

Like the multiple safety picks. Hopefully they can get a player out of it and they should be good on specials along with the LB.

I voted B. I liked the draft for both local teams.

The Jets needed to upgrade the team speed and they did that. They filled their team needs, including OLine depth. I never thought the Jets were going to draft a RT in the early rounds because they still want to salvage Vlad and give him every opportunity to unseat Hunter.

I think the Coples "lazy" label spouted by fans and media is completely overblown. The UNC situation was completely unworkable last year and he did the only human thing. People act that athletes are some supposed to be paragons of competitive morality which is ridiculous. His HC was ousted, the program was knee deed in scandal and Coples was in his last year. His job at that point was to get out of the season healthy. He even told his teammates before hand his intentions. I would have acted the same exact way. And with Rex's attack style D, the Dlineman aren't just expected to occupy blockers. They're expected to collapse the pocket which Mo and Coples can do. DeVito, despite his worthy contributions in stopping the run and being stout along the lines, can't.

Hill is the perfect fit. People talk about his lack of catches, rawness, and his experience in a non-prostyle offense but so what? He's a speedster. He doesn't need to know the intricacies of certain routes right now. In Sparano's O, Hill is expected to stretch the field and block. Not hard for someone of his limited experience to understand. I liken it to the Robinson pic for the Giants. Use your freakish natural ability and learn on the job.

I liked the Davis and Bush picks because of the speed factor. Both should contribute right away in the rotation. The others are talented fillers.

True.Sparano wants a blocking back. Conner fits that. Powell, if he could play, would've been given more of a shot last year. So you have to wonder how productive he will ever be.

Ducasse sucks. Hunter sucks. Hoping and praying for a dramatic improvement is a fool's errand. Can hope the depth OL picks are better. Thye have to be. Ducasse, if he plays as badly as last year, should get cut. Hunter's idiotic contract probably precludes cutting him.

I give it a C right now, Coples is a risk boom or bust pick

Took Hill over Cordy Glenn a starting RT for next 10 yrs (plenty of ammo to move ahead of Jills) also Hill caught a whomping 49 balls in his career at GT

Davis in 3rd rd is a STmer at best

Coples turns into Peppers, grade goes right to a B

nailing your 1st rd pick doesnt give anyone an A.

It's more than just "nailing" a first round pick.

"Nailing" a first round pick is drafting a solid starter with pro-bowl potential. Drafting a Peppers, an elite player with All-Pro potential, best at position is a home run. That boosts any draft.
