Byrd getting tagged. Do you trade #18 and pay him?

As much as I would like having him roam center field for us, you can't give up that pick AND sign him to a $50 mil contract. If they'd take a 2015 1st (which I'm hoping would be in the 25 - 32 range, I might consider that. I believe Idzik can address most of our needs this year, and other than Wilerson next year, we don't have many key FA to worry about next year.

Bad thing for Buffalo is Byrd won't be showing up for camp, and won't come to play until week 10. They've got to pay the dude.

Still don't think Idzik bites.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports the Bills still want to do a contract with Byrd, but they plan to place the franchise tag on him if that doesn't happen. They won't let Byrd get away for nothing. (A long-term deal before the March 3 franchise-tag deadline sounds unlikely.)

The franchise tag is not intended to be used as a vehicle to make a trade. It's supposed to be a precursor to signing a player long-term. Byrd, who played for new Browns coach Mike Pettine last season in Buffalo, didn't sign his franchise tag with the Bills last year until late August. He didn't suit up until Buffalo's sixth game of the season, and then proceeded to have a fantastic season.

Byrd is not likely to be happy about getting the tag, despite the 20 percent raise to a one-year offer sheet worth roughly $8.3 million. Getting the tag is the first step in what promises to be a long, potentially contentious process. It could end in a long holdout, a new contract or possibly a big-time trade.

What? Our pick is in the 25-32 range in 2015? Wow, we are getting home field advantage, and winning the Superbowl next year? Are you the same guy that posted that thread "I want to win the SB this year"?

You do realize that we have the LOWEST rated starting QB in the NFL. That NE is still in our division, and still has BRADY and Belichick?

We are more likely to be drafting in the 1-5 range than 25-32.  WOW.

If I posted we would be in the 25-26 range, I'd get 2 other guys on the board saying I'm like you (half glass empty/ sky falling kind of guy)

Shoot me for being optimistic.

But back to the REAL POINT of this post.... How bad do guys want to sign Byrd???

OK, I'll accept that.

NOT giving a 1st for Byrd.

How do you figure that we'll slip down to become one of the 5 worst teams?

We had pick 18 last year and this year we've got more draft picks and cash than most teams.

1. Geno regresses

2. When Geno regresses, fans, the media, THIS BOARD will be screaming for the backup, but we know REX's history, dividing the locker room

3. Our schedule is BRUTAL, 4th toughest I think

4. REX wilts under the pressure trying to save his job

5. and most impotantly: ITS THE FREAKING JETS.

I don't think a first round pick is a realistic price for him. He's coming off an injury and wants crazy money, plus, he wants outta town in the worst way.

Nor do I think they would trade him to us in the first place.

However, say they trade him to the Browns, then the Browns turn around and trade him to us (for the same level pick + Stephen Hill).  Browns would recoup a pick, get a player.  Bills get the Browns pick.  Jets get Jairus Byrd.

It is the SOJ syndrome that plagues some of the fan base(JW78). If you don't perform up to a top 10 -15 QB in your rookie year, after coming out of a college system not used in the NFL, you suck and we should trade all our draft picks to move up and grab ANOTHER rookie QB. :face:

No disrespect to the rest of them, but I agree. I'm glad someone else here has some sense. You just don't do that.

Problem is that as a non-exclusive franchise player, we could negotiate a deal with him but we'd be on the hook for not one, but two first round picks.  I could see BUF coming down a bit, but I see no reason why they wouldn't demand at least a first rounder.  They could just keep him and play him.

I don't see where you get that.

He played in 11 games last season, and doesn't want to be there.

To stay they would have to tag him at $8.3M, and that would buy them time to either work out a long-term deal, or to trade him.

While I think a top notch FS would put this D over the top...you just dont pay that kind of price.

$ wise, its ok to drop some coin...but $ and picks...no.

There are a couple of FA's that would be good fits for much less $

That's how the franchise tag works.  Teams can designate exclusive or non-exclusive and everything I've read says the Bills will use the latter (I think it's cheaper).  In that case, teams can negotiate but if they sign and BUF does not match, they are entitled to two first round picks.  BUF can also agree to a trade for less if they want.

This thread seems to sum it up well enough:  http://boards.buffalobills.com/showthread.php?482478-Jairus-Bryd-the-Franchise-Tag-and-you

Thank you, Dan.

I knew teams could tender players at different levels to receive varying compensations (the 1st and 3rd level, the 1st round level, the  2nd, or the 3rd).  I forgot about the "f*ck you tag" which basically tells the player they're not going anywhere.  I can't think of a team in recent history which has spent two 1st round picks to swipe a player they sought.

So it really comes down to which players in Buffalo are set to hit free agency, and which player they covet the most, to apply the "franchise" tag.

Hah!  Perfect nickname for that tag.

Other than Keyshawn and Herschel Walker, has any team traded (at least) two first round picks for a single player?

Edit:  The Bills traded two 1sts and a 2nd (and Greg Bell) for Cornelius Bennet as part of the Dickerson trade.  Wow.
