Jets Were in the Running for La'el Collins

Per Kristain Dyer....Would've been nice if they'd have inquired about his status as a suspect/non-suspect and taken him in the 7th.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – La'el Collins could have been a New York Jet.

It was one of the craziest and most surreal storylines of of the NFL Draft and one that could have had him landing in New Jersey as a member of the Jets. After Collins, the LSU star offensive lineman, failed to get drafted by any team in last week's NFL Draft, he ended up getting signed as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Dallas Cowboys. This came after 29 teams called and inquired about his services.

The Jets were one of those teams interested in making him a contract offer.

“The Jets inquired about La'el Collins along with 29 other teams. Every single team was required to meet our criteria for the contract. The Jets were one of the teams willing to do so,” Deryk Gilmore, Collins' agent, told Metro. Gilmore is with the agency Priority Sports.

“We just didn't feel it was a good fit at the end of the day.”

Collins, of course, saw his draft stock fall days before a first round where he was thought to be a possible top 10 selection. He was wanted for questioning in the death of Brittney Mills, his ex-girlfriend who was pregnant at the time.

Signs seem to be pointing towards Collins getting his name cleared and being able to play sooner rather than later. Earlier this week, the Cowboys signed Collins to a three-year, $1.65 million contract per reports.

But it could have been with the Jets.

Huh?!?!?  Seems like the PERFECT fit.

So all but 3 teams were 'in the running'.   Did I miss something?  Thank god for the Mass-deflator or this month would be full of this stuff masquerading as news.

29 teams inquired but his agent said he wanted as fully guaranteed contract as can be given I guess.  So Jets were only one of a handful of teams willing to provide that type of contract.

Collins was invited to Jerry Jones private estate, as a southern boy who prolly loves the cowboys it was prolly creaming his pants the whole time.  and you know Jerry, he prolly had all the strippers in texas over there that night and had Collins drunk on the cowboys kool aid.

There was no way he wasn't going to be a cowboy lol

"At the end of the day?" I don't get it TT..... are you referring to your Avitar phrase?

Maccagnan's favorite phrase (listen to just about any interview w/ him).  Collins' agent used that phrase as well (which is why I said "perfect fit").

I'm surprised no one picked him with a 7th rd pick most don't make it anyway.

He never would have signed as a 7th round pick, he would have to sign a 4 year contract instead of 3 years, and it would have made him eligible for the 2016 draft where he could have got drafted in the 1st, and gotten guaranteed multi millions instead of a guarantee of 1 million. He also gets to the big money now after 3 years instead of 4 since he wasn't drafted, if he plays up to his 1st round grade. His agent told teams specifically he would not sign with ANY team if drafted after the 3rd round, and would sit out the season, and enter the 2016 NFL draft, because he wasn't drafted he is not eligible for the 2016 NFL Draft.

Understood I was thinking of when the Raiders got Bo Jackson for a 7th but that was different.. Bo told Tampa not to take him and they did anyway so he played Baseball and next year Al Davis had no problem with Bo playing when the BB season ended and got him for a 7th rd pick.

"Wasn't a good fit"="**** your income tax rate"

1.8 mil in NY is equivalent to maybe about $4mil in TX. A small 2 bedroom condo can be $300k in NY while you can that same thing in TX for 80k. A house that'll cost half a mil in NY will run him 200k here.

Then the state tax n it became a no brainer. Our problem was, we couldn't offer more money. It was the max deal. And I believe he can ask for a new contract after 2 or 3 yrs.

Texas also borders Louisiana... closer to home.

You make a helluva case for Texas $ over NY $

Would the same have held true (4 year vs 3 year deal and would have made him eligible for the 2016 draft) w/ a 6th round pick?  I would've gambled a 6th on him.

If you read through my whole post his agent said of he isn't drafted by the end of round 3, so any pick from 4th round on he would have not signed according to his agent.

If my team didn't get the guy, I would rather they were not in running. That's even more frustrating.

Really? I personally would of been more pissed if the Jets didn't inquire or try to sign the guy. At least we tried, he just chose a "better fit" for himself.

New York Media???!!! No way his agent wants him answering questions from Mehta and the like.

From the little that I've read it seems like he's somewhat involved in that murder of his gf... I don't really think we need him anyway.  still can root for him when they play the (G)irly men twice a year

We couldn't draft the guy he would have just sat out until next year.  Texas doesn't have a state income tax so he takes home some extra money.  Since he isn't making tons that extra money would benefit him.  OL don't get much as far as endorsements so coming here made no sense for him.

See The Raiders came second in the N Suh sweekstakes. ( who cares) Unfortunately you don't get any points if you don't get the guy you want. Really doesn't matter if you were second or 32 on the players list.

didnt know this.

So if u you're drafted, you're eligible for the next draft and if you aren't, you're not?

What's the logic behind this

If they did take him in the 7th and he sat a yr and then signed a huge contract elsewhere.... would we have gotten a Compensatory pick for him?

That would have been sweet.

No he would have ended up playing for us rather than lose a year of pay and his career.
