FloridaJetsFan
The Jets signed former Giants punter Steve Weatherford last week as injury cover. It was short-term cover. The Jets announced that Weatherford had been released, ending a four-day stint with the team. Regular punter Ryan Quigley missed last week’s game against the Patriots with a leg infection, and he’s apparently ready to come back now, which made the veteran Weatherford expendable. I can't believe that there isn't some guy out there who was a great punter in college and hasn't been picked up by any teams. All the teams seem to just recycle the same dudes. TAKE A CHANCE ON A NO NAME!!!!!
Jetster
Our special teams issues still haven't been solved for a while, even Westhoff had issues in his last 2 years. The punter problem has killed our field position, though Quigleys stats don't look bad he seems to always have his worst punts when we're backed up. There just aren't that many punters in the world who can meet the NFL requirements for distance, hang time, directional kicking, etc.
bealeb319
OMG im shocked!...sitting behind a desk for the past 8 weeks gave him a spaghetti leg the guy cant kick the ball anymore atleast not without some practice. Why keep him when there are cheaper options that would preform better.

CrazyCarl40
I hope to hell they are still looking around. Quigley is still awful. Everything we know about MM so far tells us he will be. I feel like this was a try out of convenience, and Weatherford blew it. I'm sure they'll keep searching.
KRL
Shameful that the punt unit isn't pulling their weight. Changing field position is critical with the type of defense we have. It's disgusting that you have to hold your breath every time Quigley comes on the field
TheMagicRat
I hate the idea of drafting a punter, but we should take one in the 6th or 7th round who can absolutely boom the ball. Most players in the sixth or seventh round don't last long in the NFL. At least we could potentially find someone who could stick around for a long time and help our team immediately. That's not to say you can't find a punter in the 6th or 7th -- I think Sam "King of Soul" Koch and Pat McAfee were drafted in that range.

EM31
The idea that the decline in special teams play is because the modern day roster structure under the cap does not permit ST specialists to be retained is silly. It is a zero sum game. If salary structure is that way then the market price for ST specialists goes down in the same way that changes in the game have caused RB market values to go down. It does not mean there are fewer running backs. It just means they make less money. League salary cap rules do not result in creating more or less special teams "specialist" players. Regardless of any of that, even if you buy into this theory, that the overall level of ST play has declined across the board, then all 32 teams should be in the same boat with respect to finding and retaining special teams talent. Why is it then that OUR special teams are doing so poorly if these conditions are supposed to be impacting everyone? We have done a poor job here for years. We operate under the same rules as everyone else (except the Patriots who cheat) so why can't we find a punter or block for one or cover punt returns? <edited to add> Folk is pretty much exempt from any criticism here. That's not to say you can't find a punter in the 6th or 7th -- I think Sam "King of Soul" Koch and Pat McAfee were drafted in that range. You have a fair point. I did a quick search and found a majority of the punters in the NFL were UDFAs. However, three out of the five best punters in the NFL were drafted after the 5th round (I'm going to use NET avg. I think that's the best stat to use but I wouldn't call myself an expert on punting statistics). It can be done, but like all positions, the players need to be developed properly. 1. Pat McAfee 7th Round, Pick 222 2. Sam Koch 6th Round, Pick 203 3. Dustin Colquitt 3rd Round Pick 99 4. Kevin Huber, 5th Round Pick 142 5. He always shanks them when the Jets have their backs to the goal line and booms them at midfield. Weatherford was particularly bad and was obviously a desperation signing. WTF happened to Quigley's shinbone first of all and why was Bowles notified just hours before the biggest game the Jets have had in years?
Larz
it's a sh*t storm, quigley sucks, and the coverage sucks too his avg is 30th, just .4 yards from #29 the net is dead last at 32.5, a full yard and a half worse than #31 some stats geek can tell me what that means, but it aint good, lol
