Petty is more ready, so he gets first crack.  Likely by the midway point this year.

Next year, open competition, Petty/Hack/Draft Pick?

While everyone predicted the Jets at 8-8 or 7-9 there was the chance that if we caught lightning in a bottle we would get into the playoffs based on how we ended last season.  So I believe Jets management felt the upside to Fitzpatrick being on the team vs. giving the team to Petty was the impetus.  Our schedule is too hard too early to put a raw guy like Petty under center.

I understand why they did it. But my guess is that they thought they would win 9/10 games and maybe if lucky 10/11; if you thought you were only a 7 win team, you do something else. Even with our schedule and the big goose egg we dropped yesterday, we should still win 7 or 8 games. If we don't we bet really wrong on Fitz. Either way, no way Mac thinks we are a 6-7 win team and signs Fitz.

For that you play Geno for the first 6 games (and then all of the Geno never had a chance crowd would be gone) and people would be happy if Petty won 4 of the last 10. Clearly Mac thought we had a REAL shot at the playoffs or he doesn't sign Fitz.

While the playoffs are still a possibility we must play our best quarterback.

Once the playoffs are a pipe dream we must start to validate young players at quarterback and every other position on the field.  Any player not in our plans for 2017 should not get significant playing time the last 6 or 7 weeks of the 2016 season.

It's really crazy how people latch on to players and can't let go.  Hey, I was guilty for Mark Sanchez but at least that guy flashed, at least that guy showed potential, at least that guy won playoff games on very big stages.
