I can't see him getting enough snaps to do that unless QE doesn't last long or he beats out Kearse. He certainly won't play over Robby.

Maybe he winds up with what... 25 receptions for the year?

Okay, he might now have 70 catches or something but he'll be a big contributor and make us confident in what we have for the following year. I can see him rotating a bunch at #3 spot and even some 2WR formations. He'll get plenty of opportunities, especially if the offense is moving and we get good QB play.

Kearse was excellent last year, much much more than a placeholder. and hes not really old yet.

Yeah, Anderson is more dynamic but Kearse was our most consistent, experienced, well rounded receiver last year. I'd be pretty shocked if he wasn't on the team -- I think it's far more likely he leads the team in targets.

Kearse is a placeholder and if the Anderson/enunwa/Pryor/Hanson group emerge then he's a candidate for trade/release. Very solid player but I doubt he's in their long term plans.

It's nice to finally have too much talent...

Why is everyone so quick to criticize Kearse.  They guy has good NFL size at 6'1, is only 29, has a ton of experience and is coming off a good year for a team that was devoid of talent on offense.  Plus he only makes $5million/year.

Personally, I think he is someone we should be looking to extend.  Bump his 2018 number since we have the space now, and get him for 2 more years at a lower cap number which will give us a good NFL veteran starter through his age 32 season

kearse is the type of wr you need to help break in a new qb.  he starts if healthy.

No.  My recollection is that he was abysmal from the very first day, although he joined the team late because of the rules about his classmates graduating.  I recall Mangini honestly answering questions about how he was "swimming" out there.

True to an extent. I do believe that you can see real progression in some things that the players do in OTA’s. Few examples being Hansen who looks quicker, stronger and more precise on his route running. Anderson’s route running looks to have improved. Darnold’s learning very quickly and settling in. Nickerson grabbed a pick last week and  seems to have good instincts. Just little things that can indicate success the further we get into work outs.

Thanks to PK and everyone who contributed with tweets. Seems like Darnold improves quickly. We're still a long way form training camp but I really think this is set up for Darnold to win the job.

In yesterdays NFL, when you had 2-days, could work with players all year and could run as many padded practices as needed sitting a QB could make sense as they could still develop, but not really in todays NFL...only way to develop a QB is through mass reps and actual playing time. Darnold needs to play to develop. Pointless to sit him even for a game.

Can't underestimate the value of having multiple professional QB's in camp for Darnold to emulate, compete with, etc.  It's one thing to make progress when the progress is measured against JAG's.  It's another thing altogether to make progress when you have to outshine competent, and in some cases very good (Bridgewater) QB's.  Such a better environment for Darnold to grow in.

During April 2017, Saunders participated in The Spring League, a startup developmental league who operates as a showcase for NFL and CFL scouts. Saunders was one of several Spring League players who signed with professional teams later in the year; in Saunders' case he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. Despite being released after the preseason, Saunders was assigned to the Hamilton practice roster. After two weeks, Saunders was promoted to the active roster to take the place of star receiver Terrence Toliver, who suffered a torn ACL during Hamilton's opening game of the 2017 season. During his CFL debut on July 8, Saunders recorded 6 catches for 78 yards, making him the most productive receiver for the Ticats. Saunders also had one rush for a single yard in a losing effort against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Saunders topped his performance the following week, again serving as Hamilton's most productive receiver by catching 5 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the British Columbia Lions.[9] In later weeks, Saunders was also used as a return specialist. During the 16 games he played in, Sanders made 76 catches for 1170 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Any one got Canton's number?

Meanwhile Jalen Saunders is in Tulsa, working the register at the local Dairy Queen.

No jalen saunders had a big year for Hamilton tiger cats last year. 76 catches 1170 yards, 5 tds.

And guess who else i saw this past weekend at a cfl exhibition  game?  Shaq Evans trying out for Saskatchewan.

So we are good at drafting CFL superstars?

Vern was a beast at Ohio State and I remember reports from OTA's raving about him.

For example, last year Jets’ first round pick linebacker Vernon Gholston from Ohio State, who declared as a junior, had to wait until June to finally get acclimated to his teammates and playbook in team OTA’s.

After the disadvantage of the spring semester rule, Gholston really never settled in until training camp.  During Gholston’s uninspiring rookie season you had to have wondered if the missed classroom and field time in OTA’s affected his first year growth.

Gholston's Summer Was "Not Encouraging"

Posted by NBC Sports on July 2, 2009, 2:52 PM EDT

Early in his introductory press conference, Rex Ryan was asked about how he’ll fix last year’s first-round pick Vernon Gholston.

He compared him to Terrell Suggs, and hasn’t stopped building Gholston up publiclysince.

Adam Schefter, who has started his Twitter account with fingers a’blazing, indicates that a different story has developed behind the scenes, and “the signs from OTAs were not encouraging.

It’s very early, but this is troubling news for the Jets.  Football in shorts should be where the athletically gifted Gholston shines.

Instead, the No. 6 overall pick of last year’s draft may be showing the new coaching staff what the old staff reportedly saw in him: “next to nothing.

We’ll know soon enough how much Gholston has developed.  Verbal backslaps are nice, but coaches tend to speak loudest with playing time.

I agree. I don't think players really develop if they aren't getting game reps in this day and age. The only way you don't start him early, IMO, is if 1) he's not even close or 2) the offensive line is playing so poorly you're worried the guy is going to be damaged.

There were absolutely no raves.  He missed almost all of the OTAs because of the rule then in effect that you couldn't join your pro team until your classmates graduated.  He then started off lousy and stayed lousy.  Mangini gave some honest interviews about how poorly he was doing when he did join his teammates.

Here's a typical article from the Post.  It went downhill from there.

I agree that you what happens in OTA's is not proof that a player will be great, but there are like 80/90 players on the field during OTA's. When a beat writer singles out 4-5 players that's usually a very good sign for those players.
