A hearty thank you to the moderators for making the draft possible again this year.

As our Texans GM, thought you would find these tidbits neat. In Movin theChains mock, Kirwin and Miller followed your lead and took Anderson#2, and then traded up to Arizona and took Carter at #3. Didn’t hear the terms. Gets better…. top of rd #2, SF trades Lance to Texans for #33.? Think I’d say no to that one.

When I decided to take Will Anderson in this draft I also considered making a pitch to trade up to #3 and get one of the top 2 QBS but the pick #3 GM was not around for his pick.

Trading up to #3 for carter would be a colossal mistake if you ask me.  Trading up for a DT with character issues is flat out dumb.

By the way, they had us taking Skoronski.

Wow i feel cheated.  I'll take Ronnie Hickman, S, OSU

I like Hickman and he was nearly the pick for the Titans. But then again I nearly picked Tavion Thomas so what do I know!!

Hey hey, big thanks to everyone that participated and especially the crew moderating. Excellent draft, as always.

Colts picks:

I felt like there were holes everywhere for the Colts, so very few positions were looked at a non-need.

I wanted to land a QB1, and was gifted that pick at #4. With my second pick, I felt like the new coaching staff would want a “guy” on defense, too. I like Sanders here for the Colts schematically.

The next focus was OL. With some vets in place, Freeland gets a year to add muscle and technique. Ekiyor helps improve the interior, plus some teams worked him out a center, so there some good poisitionsl flexibility there.

Evans gives us a guy to distribute the load with Taylor. He’s been given too many touches the last 3 years. This will keep him in the field and gives our young QB and great run game to take pressure off of him.

Garner seems like a project to covert to safety, maybe. Hampton a situational rusher. Bush a nickel corner (he played this role better in college, but was moved outside more recently). Tre Tucker is about adding team speed. He’s small, but a good OC should be able to use him in unique ways. All 4 late picks feel like good special teams guys, more importantly.

No idea if this is a goood or bad draft, just sharing my thinking thru the picks.

In the Houston War Room:  (Started with 11 picks I believe and ended up with 11 but lots of moving picks around in the draft.)

1-2 Will Anderson - Edge - Alabama

I was going to take a QB in this draft but since I do not love the guys at the very top but do love Anderson this was my pick.  In today's NFL you can build your team first and then go after a high pick or vet or you can draft high and hope to build around him.  (I do not hate Stroud and Young but to me they are not must have QBs.)

1-14 Jaxon Smith-Njigba - Ohio State

I had worked out a trade pre-draft with New England who wanted to jump the Jets in the draft order.  I made it clear it would have to wait till I was on the clock to see how the draft was going.  Once I knew I would get one of two players I traded down two spots for a couple of 4th rounders and was very happy to get Smith-Njigba, a great need and imo the top WR in the draft.

1-31 Hendon Hooker - QB - Tennessee

I wanted Hooker but had to decide if I should sit tight in the early  2nd round and forgo the 5th year option for 1st rounders or trade up.  I did not see the guys late in the first as threats to take a QB until the Kansas City GM announced he wanted to trade down so I contacted him and traded up a few spots back into the 1st round.  I like Hooker a lot but opinions on him vary wildly.

2-54 Sam LaPorta - TE - Iowa

TE is a massive need for the Texans and I wanted a good pass catching TE.  I had my eye on LaPorta and Musgrave, when Musgrave was picked at 47 I was a bit panicked but I was able to trade up to get LaPorta.

3-64 Jack Campbell - LB - Iowa

Another guy I wanted real bad, if he stays healthy this guy is going to be really really good.  Once again I traded up to get him.

4-104 Ricky Stromberg - C - Arkansas

The Texans actually have some really good oline pieces but Center was a need I wanted to address.  I had a list of about 4 guys hovering around this pick.  If I recall the Jets took the Michigan center who I was looking at, the other guys I had on my list Patterson and Ekiyor went right after I picked Stromberg.

Then due to all my trading up at the cost of mid round assets I did not have another pick until the 6th round so I had a long wait, the guy I was hoping would still be there was indeed still there at my pick but the Packers wanted to trade up so I traded down and picked up three 7th rounders.  I'm sure the scout pounding the table for Caleb Murphy was ticked off when I traded out and he got picked a few picks later.

I had five 7th rounders and I wanted to get guys with at least one or more NFL quality athletic traits.  If a guy is big or can run or is super strong they have a chance to be starter quality at some point in time so I did not go the safe route with my 7th rounders.

7- 230 Matt Landers - WR- Arkansas

Has some holes in his game but he is 6'4" and ran a 4.37

7 - 235 Joey Fisher - OT - Shepherd

Level of competition is the obvious big draw back but he threw up 40 in the bench, and his 40 and 10 yard split runs at his pro day would have been #1 at the combine for oline.

7-242 Keaton Mitchell - RB - East Carolina

Drawbacks are level of competition and his size 5'9", 188 but he has been very productive and durable the last two years and ran a 4.37 with the fastest 10 yard split at the combine.

7-256 Yasir Abdullah - Edge - Louisville

Not big, just 6'1", 242 but two years of nice production for Louisville, very fast at 4.47 at the combine.  Maybe a Bryce Huff pass rush specialist.

7-259  Daniel Scott - S - California

Last pick of the draft, it was between him and DT Cameron Young but Young was picked just before my pick.  Scott is a FS with a nice 9.87 RAS.  Good speed and mobility and reasonable instincts but a lousy tackler.  Reminded me of another Cal Safety, Ashtyn Davis but at least he was the last pick in the draft.

Overall I was really pleased with my draft.  Having lots of picks and lots of high picks is an obvious advantage.  It was especially nice that people were in a trading mood this year.  Last year I couldn't buy a trade, this year I traded down twice and up three times.

With the 154th Selection in the JetNation Mock Draft, the Cheifs select,  Carter Warren, OT, PITT

Grades as a good pass protector who can play both LT and RT.  Started last 2 season on LT.  Former 4 start recruite with MASSIVE wingspan.  KC glad to have him to throw into our OT mix.

@Jif is on the clock (I think)

Sorry the draft didn’t live up to your expectations. Next year we’ll add a banter thread on top of the selection and discussion thread. Do you have any more suggestions to make it as good as the bronco forum?

Funny how Hooker goes #31 in your Draft and I was able to grab him as development QB with Jets in Rd. 3 (70 OA)
Evaluations for players is all over the map on these websites. I like playing around moving up and down in the Draft.
I wonder if JD and other GM's do the same to prepare for any contingency?

Yes hooker eval is all over the place indeed.  That draft has Calijah kancy as 42nd overall?

End of the day, I am guessing Hooker goes in the first round.  Too many teams need QBs and a mid or late first round contract for a QB with a 5th year option is gonna be hard for all these QB needy teams to pass on.

I’ll make a prediction….Hooker will be 2nd QB off the board.

Separate selection thread, banter thread, and trades thread....easier to follow whats going on.

That 3 hour time limit is kind of rough...maybe a bit more time.  ...not only does it give the team picking time to get home from work or away from their nagging wife etc...but it allows for more crap talking in the discussion thread...you get going too fast and there isn't time to discuss the pick..wich is fun.

Would you guys be interested in a scoring system?  The Broncos one has a pretty well developed system to score how everyone did once the real draft is completed.

They also do a UDFA round after the draft...done by bid, and they have a well developed system for that also.

The spreadsheet you have is really useful (I didn't quite get it at first as it didn't present very well on my phone)  Once I understood how it worked.  I would suggest not having a ranking list on on it.  It seems like alot of guys drafting here, were sticking pretty close to that ranking list.  In my opinion...it's better when you don't know who likes what player, and you don't know maybe what rankings others like and don't like.

I'd be happy to assist and help if you'd be interested in any of this.

Also...next year, come on over to that Broncos one...there is always a crunch to find 5 or 6 drafters to fill that one out every year.

Some of us read your  comments on the Broncos board.  So we had "no separate thread for banter", eh?  What do you think the "discussion" thread was for?  Shows how aware you were. And no, we don't need 1400 different threads.  Just 3.  Sign-up, selection and discussion.  Trades get posted there.  Plus we don't trade active players due to cap issues and we don't trade future picks.  Absolutely no need for a "trade" thread, LOL.  If you read the rules in the first post or two of the threads, we clearly express that the rankings are uploads from early March or before and they are just their for everyone's convenience.   People can do with it what they want.  anyone who relies on it exclusively is a bad GM in the mock.  The very same sites from which they are uploaded have already altered their rankings significantly by the time we start up.  And no... our GMs were not "just plucking guys off a spread sheet" as you stated. Lots of picks from lower rankings if you paid any attention.  "one long disorganized mess"?  LOL.   But thanks for your feedback.

FYI, you missed way too many picks for a GM in this draft. You're supposed to send a prioritized list to the mods when you know you can't make it in time.  It's not that difficult to do,but you didn't bother.

For anyone interested, here is our disingenuous friends' post on the Broncos board:

Quote

n the Jets draft....the guy running it has posted a google docs spreadsheet that he updates to show who has been picked who is available and rankings. And this bunch, has been sticking pretty close to whatever ranking list this is. It's kind of annoying. also, strict 2 hour time limit on picks...I've missed mine a few time and had come in after a few selections and gotten mine in....no separate thread for banter...it's all one long disorganized mess where it's alos a bunch of dudes more or less plucking dudes within 10 spots give or take of the sheet presented. Not really enjoyable.

I probably just should have followed Mick in

  • 2 weeks later...

With the McClendon pick, all of my guys have now been picked.  My day 3 picks were great.  Days 1 and 2 sucked -- they all went at least a full round after I picked them.

Diaby and Mapu who I took in 4 and 7 both went ahead of Darnell Washington who I took at 33.

Sidy Sow (7th) went ahead of Tyler Scott (3rd).

Weird draft.

We gave you two chances to pick your guy.   I can't speak to the other mods, but if a guy is on someone's list I am not going snipe him, but you already had two shots at him so he was fair game at that point.

I guess we both did pretty well with our trade in the 7th round.  I added Mapu with the pick I got from you, and you got Abdullah with one of mine.  Probably two of the best picks in the draft.  I will have the scores up by tomorrow -- as long as I did well.

Otherwise it may be a while.
