Veteran Pro Bowl OL Mawae, current NFLPA president, to retire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Kevin Mawae, president of the NFL Players Association, is retiring from the NFL after 16 seasons and eight Pro Bowls.

Mawae has called a news conference for Friday afternoon in Nashville, and a statement posted on the NFLPA's website confirms he will be announcing his retirement.

The lineman played for Tennessee last season, starting all 16 games and helping block for Chris Johnson as he ran for 2,006 yards. The starts gave Mawae 241 regular season games played, at that time the most among active linemen.

But his contract was up, and no team called to sign the lineman, who turns 40 in January. He will serve out his term as union president, which ends in March 2012.

Loved Mawae while he was here. He was easily one of our best players and one of the biggest reasons for the success Curtis Martin had throughout his career. I'm nog going to bad mouth the guy.

Thanks for a hell of a career Kevin.

He was a great signing for the Jets. Really played his ass off here.

Also he was WAY ahead of the curve on fan interaction. He used to have that player page on NFL.com and he would answer emails. He was very accessible.

Enjoy your retirement Kevin. Not too bad, retiring at 40!

+1 Until Mangold, he was the best center I have seen in the Green and White.

I wish him nothing but the best for his furture.

I will always remember him for having ducked me at the ESPNZone that day. Great player, tough player, but an absolute pussy when it came to battling Tom Shane. Yes sir.

Mawae was a great player for the Jets and I can't understand why anyone would hate on him. He didn't force his way out of town a la Pete Kendall; Manidiot dumped him. Sad thing is that it was probably one of the best decisions Manidiot every made since we got Mangold to take over.

I would not be surprised to see Kevin take over Gene Upshaw's position after the new CBA has been completed. For a long time Kevin, when Upshaw was still alive, touted Mawae as his replacement.

One hell of a career Kevin, even if you never got a ring!
