Nnamdi Asomugha Thread: MERGED

there is no doubt nnambi makes the jets better

bottom line is tanny needs to due his job

some of the lower tier players might sign in the 72 hour window. anybody with real talent would be well advised to test the market with the new cba rules and time restraint

the only top free agent the jets have that might consider signing in the 72 hour window is edwards.the other 2 will test the market

tanny needs to concentrate on the lower level guys and maybe edwards during this 72 hour window.also restructure as many current contracts as he can. maybe deal with harris. he will see where he stands when free agency begins

when the clock strikes midnight,he needs to show up on nnamdi's front lawn in woodys helicoptor filled with hookers.find out right then and there if nnamdi is serious about playing for the jets.if not, its really quite simple.move on to plan "b"

The issue that I have with this is the uncertainty. There is no contractual certainty. This bullsh*t of people saying Asomugha will get $16.5M or $10M is just that. Nobody has any idea. This isn't even a deal yet. It will be a mad house and there will be opportunities. I'm sure Tannenbaum has a number in mind for CB and if he fits you sign him.

Further, the franchise tag number for WR's is projected to be just under $12M, while the CB number is over $14M.

Do people here really think it's the smart move to spend more on a #2 CB than a #1 WR? Which player is more likely to hit (or exceed) their respective franchise number, Holmes or Aso?

This "best CB tandem in history" fantasy has really gone to people's heads. I'd rather blow some cash on Kiwanuka coming off the bench to attack the QB than break the bank on a #2 CB.

I agree with you on this. In an NFL world with no salary cap then sure, what the hell, get the guy in here and try to build an all-time defense, but under the circumstances it's just not feasible. Asomugha would be a great player for the Jets, but his talents would absolutely be wasted simply by the fact that at most all he could ever be asked to do is a cover a #2 WR. If you look at the Jets defense the last 2 years, that has been nowhere close to their biggest problem as it is, even when Lito freakin' Sheppard was the #2 corner. Then again, the Jets defense hasn't had all that many major problems to begin with, and certainly not enough to justify having the two highest paid CBs (who would also be 2 of the highest paid defenders) in all of the league, while ignoring an inconsistent offense with a young franchise QB who's yet to be given a consistent set of WRs to throw to in his 2 NFL seasons.

As you have said, I have no issue with money being spent on a reasonable #2 or a quality starting safety on defense, as it's not going to completely inhibit the Jets abilities to do other things. But signing Asomugha would essentially be the beginning and the end of what the Jets would be able to do in FA this season, and it would be at the sacrifice of the entirety of the offense and potentially other positions on the D. It's a great fantasy and all, but the salary cap reality of the NFL makes it only that.

The NFL is allowing every team to contact every free agent once the new league year begins. The 72 hour window is the time in which teams can sign their own free agents, but they'll be doing it knowing what any other player they might be interested in is expecting.

So the Jets will be talking to Holmes, while Holmes is entertaining offers from other teams. He could very conceivably decide to sign with the Jets during that window if the Jets are right in the ballpark with other offers. I think it will be the wise players who sign quickly. Every year we see free agent money dry up, with a few players left standing when the music stops. It'll be more frenetic than ever this year.

Ditto for a guy like Aso. The Jets will probably contact him -there are few tires Tanny won't kick- but he'll also be contacted by teams like the Bucs who are $50M under the cap and have plans to cut a starting CB as soon as the league lets them.

Once again we are a playoff team, why are you so worried about the regular season ? Perenial playoff teams dont worry about what it takes to get to the playoffs they worry about what it takes to win in the playoffs.

Two things:

1.) For the Jets to take the next step, securing a first round bye needs to be a priority. Lead the league in wins, I believe we've all heard Rex say.

2.) The bigger problem for the Jets in the postseason is the offense, not the defense. We've held Indy to 16 points in their house, and the Pats to 14 in theirs (before a garbage time TD). What the Jets need is an offense that can score more than 17 against a mediocre Colts defense. And one that can show up in the first half of an AFC Championship Game.

The offensive fixes are on the team in better run blocking and usage of LT in the passing game on 3rd down. This team will live and die on their pass rush. Notice how the jets had hardly any takeaways last season? Thats 100% lack of a pass rush.

To be fair the WHOLE team failed to show up in that first half D, O, and specials all were pitiful

Indeed. I agree with slats 100% in that the offense absolutely needs to be the bigger concern for the future success of this team, but that 1st half was some of the worst tackling I've ever seen in football, while the offense was just nonexistent. The entire team was a disaster from top to bottom.

They have the pieces in place on O provided they get the WR's squared away.

That's really what the whole 10 page banter is about some saying screw WR pay Namdi and others saying we need to give Sanchez everything possible to continue with his growth and hopefully further success, just to be clear I'm in the pay the WR's, I trust Rex to get it done with less, plus Namdi 30 WR's are 27 and under more prime years production for your buck.

Just one mans opinion which we are all intitled to. Well except Visa he is unbearable with shoving his down your throat every which way lol.

THERE IS NO ******* MARKET!

For the 87th ******* time, there have been exactly zero contracts signed under the current market conditions. Therefore, there is no ******* market. We can make educated guesses, but that is all they are and they are way less educated than usual. Not only do we not know the exact terms of the new deal, it isn't even a ******* deal yet. How much will Asomugha make? How much will Cromartie make? How much will Holmes make? Edwards? Joseph? Tell me that and then I will tell you if it's worth it to sign Asomugha.

Hehehe.

Be realistic for a second here... the cap is DOWN... so even IF and that is a big IF he got Revis type money... it would be less money...

Revis is better and held the JETS at gunpoint to get that $$$

So what would "Revis" money be in the new market? You say he is 16.5 but in reality Revis is 12 or 13 per year... that would be like 15 or 11-13 this year one would think... AT Revis money...

Now you cannot pay Aso like Revis, nobody will. So where does he fall? 13 by your inflated #'s and maybe 9-12 realistically... now add to that this is his SECOND pay day and he is 30...

You're not getting that CB's aren't like front 7 guys. You can't just collect CB's like you can front 7 depth.

The cap didn't magically drop $50 million dollars. Are you telling me that teams and agents are going to all-of-a-sudden ignore any and all contracts that came before and everyone is going to collude for the purpose of operating in some socialist bargain basement? Yes, the cap dropped, but a floor was established, throwing even more competition into the ring for UFA's, if which Asomugha is the crowned jewel. You guys imagining that players are somehow going to settle for less are nuts.

I dont think the high end of the market really changes much because of the reduced cap. Most of the big money contracts were signed back in 2007 and 2008 when the salary cap was around 120 million. Long term they will probably slow the growth of the big money contracts, but as of today someone like Aso will get as much now on the market as he would have gotten 2 or 3 years ago. The people that will be most affected now are the middle rung veterans that some teams would overpay for in the past, which is a big reason why the union got $6.5 million per team in cap exemptions for veterans.

My guess is Aso will end up going to a 5-7 win type team because those are the type of teams that will overvalue him. I think more savvy GM's will look at his age and the fact that he was never tested in Oakland as negatives. Aso not being thrown at might be as much about gameplanning a bad Raiders team as it was about him being great. You probably have to go back to 2007 or 2008 when Aso was actually considered a "bottleup" player. He knew his rep has slid around the league which is why he made comments last year about wanting to line up around the field more like Revis does rather than just being avoided because of the team situation. My guess is he will get a similar contract to Revis' from a team able to abosr the huge cap hit over three or four years. I cant see a team doing what the Jets did and spreading out bonuses over 6 years since no team is going to want to deal Aso at the age of 34 or 35 and worrying aout a 9 million dollar dead cap charge.

+1

The salary cap in 2009 was $127M, the veteran exempted cap in 2011 is $126.375M. Can't really expect to see a dramatic cut in salaries based on that. Especially when you consider the raise in the salary floor. Should pretty much be business as usual.

Because 99 times out of 100 players will leave oakland when they get the chance. Who the hell wants to play that joke of a franchise that never wins anything?

Let's roll with this then...

Revis has a 4 year 46 million dollar deal.

How much does Aso get?

Because the Raiders were a 5 win team with him. Im sure his feeling is that he is the guy that helps the team get from those 5/7 wins to 9/10.

It's really a 2-year, $32.5 million dollar deal with an add-on year (at $8 mil) during which Tannenbaum gets to renegotiate a long-term deal or lose Revis as a UFA after the 2013 season. I don't see any circumstance in which Revis actually steps foot on the field for the Jets after 2012 without a new deal in hand

Yes Revis wanted boatloads of cash up front but what says Aso does? Maybe he just wants a straight up 10 million/year x 4 years. Might be nice to lock up 10 million at the age of 34...

Because he's 30 and teams around the league are in a unique position where they have to fill up their cap spending this year. If you're Tampa and have to make up $45 million in cap space within the next week, you do it with Nnamdi Asomugha by front-loading a deal as much as possible. Also, the Jets wouldn't be wise to lock in a 33, 34 year old corner at $10 mil, considering they'll have to lock up Sanchez, Keller and Revis in that same span.

If Nnamdi signs with the Jets... what name will the opposite side of the field be known as? Asomugha's Peninsula? Nnamdi's Cay? Collectively the Jets' No Fly Zone?

Obviously, if he does sign, Antonio Cromartie will go elsewhere (probably to the Houston Texans).

No no no. Cromartie will stay as the nickel back. Move Coleman to 4. Lowery is 5. Wilson is 6.

So in a 3WR-TE-RB situation you've got this: Revis shuts down WR1, Aso takes out WR2, Cro on WR3. Double team the TE with a linebacker and a safety. Double team the RB with another linebacker and safety. That leaves 3 to rush the passer and uh... we got one left over still so... QB spy. If it's a slow QB then uhhh... I guess you triple team the TE just in case.

Don't laugh.....

We have had troubles with TE's before.

Question: we had a top-ten CB playing opposite Revis this past year. The year before that, we had blech. Both years, the Jets finished top-5 in total dee. So what difference is having Nnamdi (at $15m per) going to make over there? If the scheme didn't change for Cro, it's not going to change for Nnamdi. It's not like Rex is sitting on a giant blitz package that he really wanted to use but couldn't because he.was afraid that Brian Hartline and Anthony Gonzalez were going to burn Cromartie.

cro is a freak but he's not a great corner..

being a freak at his size he's able to play at a high level even with awful fundamentals..

rex didn't put cro on an island last season, he got help..

in rex's D, aso would be on an island the same way revis is & my guess is rex would show us stuff he only dreamed of..

Cro was on an island the majority of the time. When he wasn't, it was because the Jets were rolling coverage away from Revis to force QB's to throw at Revis. I wouldn't expect the system to change all that much with Aso in the fold.

That INT stat won't change with ASo that is a Safety playmaking heavy stat and we don't have that, both Revis, and ASo can man lock but don't have the best ball skills mostly because they don't get many chances
