Jets' Austin Seferian-Jenkins takes plea deal in DUI case

Jets tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins reached a plea deal Wednesday in his Florida driving under the influence case, according to Hillsborough County Court records.

Seferian-Jenkins pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of reckless driving. In November, he initially pleaded not guilty to a DUI first offense charge.

He will avoid jail time. He received one year of probation and 50 hours of community service. He also must pay $915 in fines and attend DUI prevention classes.

But Seferian-Jenkins could still be suspended by the NFL. Based on the league's precedent with DUI cases, Seferian-Jenkins probably will face a two-game suspension next season, according to Pro Football Talk.

Seferian-Jenkins, 24, played in seven games for the Jets last season and had 10 catches for 110 yards. A second-round draft pick by Tampa Bay in 2014, he is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2017, when he will have a $1.136 million salary cap figure.

He has yet to live up to his potential in the NFL. And since none of Seferian-Jenkins' 2017 cap figure is guaranteed -- including his $1.061 million base salary -- the Jets can cut him without any significant salary cap ramifications, if they aren't impressed enough by his progress.

With the 2017 NFL Draft approaching (on April 27-29), and the NFL Scouting Combine before that, let's project some picks. Who will the New York Jets select at No. 6? Should they take a quarterback like Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer, or Mitch Trubisky? Or would a cornerback like Jalen Tabor or Marshon Lattimore be a better choice?

In September, Seferian-Jenkins was arrested for DUI -- an incident that included embarrassing police cruiser dash-cam video.

Tampa Bay immediately cut him. The Jets quickly claimed Seferian-Jenkins off waivers, hoping he could boost their unproductive tight end position.

That was Seferian-Jenkins' second DUI arrest. He had one in 2013, while playing at the University of Washington. In that instance, he pleaded guilty to DUI and served one day in jail.

A discussion for another day......I hate plea deals.

Didn't learn anything in 2013. Should be sent to jail for a time. I'd cut him, showed nothing last year, you'd think hed be chomping at the bit to prove himself after getting cut. Hate rewarding a guy with a job after being a douche! These guys can't take an UBER?

Stupid decision on his part. Having said that if he does not straighten up and fly right and actually put forth some effort, he goes.

No leniency

No breaks

Perform or get lost.

This is the mantra we need here and is why we were a disgrace last season.

Agree we allow way too much bullsh*t nonsense on and off the field many of the players on our roster wouldn't be in the NFL if it wasn't for the NY Jets.

I'd like to see what he can do,  rather than cut him.

his cap hit is 1.1 M or so.  Next season he will be an unrestricted free agent.  considering what the jets have had a tight end, at least since keller, it seems like he's a keeper.  he's getting a little older and hopefully he will mend his ways.  at least he's not beating on people or girl friends.

It's a low contract with nothing guaranteed.  No reason to cut him now, but you also let it be known that he's not guaranteed a roster spot either.  He can battle it out with whoever else they end up with in camp.  The Jets have a new OC now that might actually have some slight interest in using a TE, so let him see what he thinks of ASJ.

My thoughts exactly.

At these DUI classes it should be little more than showing pictures and videos of all the people killed, and what it did to the victims' surviving loved ones. If you catch him snickering about it after the class, throw him off a bridge.

Coin toss luck that this selfish young man, with more than enough for cab fare & a tow, didn't kill a bunch of people.
