the power surge

I guess the answer is to scrap those ridiculous halftime shows in future. If you need something at half time, dig out some flying lawnmowers.

Agreed.

Craven Cottage doesn't have the same excuse however.

I was hoping it was the Undertaker coming to abduct Joe Flacco.

i was watching the game with a group of people and one is an electrition and he says that there's no way it wasn't turned off on purpose

These things do happen at casinos, big corporations, government facilities, even power outages across counties. So it's not like it can't happen.

The problem is this is one stadium. It's the super bowl. An event where they rehearse every damn thing down to lip syncing, coin tosses, and halftime performances. To have it happen when the 49ers looked dead, the game looked like it was going to be one of those blowouts, even if the 49ers scored, it was way too weird. And to not have backup generators or something for a billion dollar game..... something seemed out of whack.

It's not the generators or lack of power that was an issue, it's the innate nature of those lights. I don't know for certain what type of lights they were using, but I'm pretty sure they're some sort of metal-halide and once those lights lose power, they require a "warm-up" period of time to get back operating. Still pretty odd timing for something like that to happen.

I don't know how those lights operate, but knowing how much preparation goes on for super bowls these days, including security and everything else, not sure how you would forget to do something about power outages or lights burning out. I would imagine there would be some kind of backup system where it doesn't' take 35 Minutes to start up again in the middle of a game. It was an entirely different game.

All I know is it was 28-6 and the 49ers were done. They looked lost. They looked scared. Kapernik looked like a kid who played 10 NFL games.

And then the lights go out. 40 minutes later the game starts back up and the 49ers score 17 points in like 4 minutes. And the Ravens didn't look like they were up for the game. It changed the entire game. Without that outage, it's a 49-24 game. And most people would've stopped watching by the 4th quarter.

The idea with the metal-halide bulbs is that you're lighting up a gas and not a solid, so it takes time for those things to warm up. It's why they turn the lights on in the baseball stadium well before it's even dark. There's nothing you can really do as long as you use the metal-halides and they'll continue to be used due to their efficiency.

I highly doubt this was a fix as the lights didn't have much to do with them not playing, it was the niners' machines on the sideline, which weren't operating. They stated a couple times that they would have played with the lights out if the niners had everything working. I also would imagine if it was fixed you would have seen CBS run more commercials and be more planned out; I don't think they'd wanna tarnish their #1 rankings at all, but who knows.

I don't think it's fixed. I do think the NFL and TV has an interest in keeping games close though. A blow out means nobody is watching the 4th quarter. No commercials. No game. Probably don't stick around for the shows after the game. Money. Viewers. Interest.

I understand the time it takes, I don't understand for a game of this magnitude and everything else that goes into making sure it's perfect, how they wouldn't figure a way for these lights not to go out. And it just the lights or a power outage? It seemed the media stated it was a power outage. Not just a light outage.

What's remarkable is they didn't run commercials. Instead we were subjected to the ESL stylings of Shannon Sharpe. Next time take the marbles out of your mouth.

seriously? they got to run several more minutes of ads inbetween those boring commentaries and that makes them several million more per minute

At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, given the fact that there is dedicated supply of electricity for important events like SuperBowl I won't be surprised that it was some hackers sitting in China sending us a message. Then given the fact that there is no cause given by the NFL immediately it kindda confirms that suspicion.

The fact that hackers from China have been active of late I won't be surprised if in the near future there was an article raising that possibility.

Sadly I wouldn't put it past them. Perhaps testing peoples reaction just to see if they could start it a half hour later next year ?

It was a power outage. It just took 30 minutes to get the lights back on once power was restored. Remember that the booth commentators were blacked out to. They had to go to their field crew for a few minutes.

They ran only a few non cbs ads and then ran those exact same ads once the game was back on. They made no extra if anything they lost money because they lost viewers.
