Chip Kelly said that the Philadelphia Eagles are not planning to draft Marcus Mariota, claiming that the organization won't "mortgage our future" for the Heisman Trophy winner.

AP Images/Ross D. FranklinEagles coach Chip Kelly, who coached Marcus Mariota at Oregon, said that Philadelphia won't mortgage its future in a potential trade for the quarterback.

Mariota, who played under Kelly at the University of Oregon, has been widely linked as a potential target of the Eagles, who likely would need to trade up in the draft to select the quarterback. But despite praising his former star, Kelly claimed that the price of trading away future draft picks is too steep for the Eagles.

"Marcus is the best quarterback in the draft," Kelly told reporters. "We will never mortgage our future to go all the way to get someone like that."

Kelly addressed a wide range of topics with the media Wednesday, one day after the Eagles acquired Sam Bradford from the Rams for fellow quarterback Nick Foles.Kelly said the Eagles are planning to move forward with Bradford, who has suffered serious knee injuries in each of the last two seasons, and Mark Sanchez as their quarterbacks.

Wow, how completely not-shocked am I?

(In response to the absurd idea that Kelly obviously picked up Bradford or Sanchez as trade bait):

There's nothing obvious about acquiring players available to anyone for the purpose of trading either or both them a month later.

What's far more likely is Kelly realizes he's not getting Mariota; it's too high to climb in the draft. He doesn't want Foles. He'd rather have Bradford's potential over that of Foles, but understandably doesn't trust Bradford to last the season. So he re-signed buttfumble and it's also why buttfumble's contract was orchestrated that way (huge raise if he's starts). Sanchez knew Kelly's plan the day he re-signed with the Eagles. He wasn't starting for anyone out of the gate, but with Bradford's history he knew he'd have a good chance of another chance starting after the starter gets injured.

The Foles/Bradford trade "idea" didn't just spring up and get worked out in the last 24 hours. Kelly wanted to make sure he had his contingency plan after Bradford is on IR again (Sanchez) locked up first.

That is clearly the most likely scenario.

That's either a horrible attempt at trying to get everyone off your trail... Or it's true, and he's an idiot for showing his cards this early.

Either way. He's showing he's a complete amateur.

Foles was a better trade piece than Bradford. It wouldn't make sense to trade for Bradford and lose a 2nd round pick next year. The Eagles actually lost ammunition if they are attempting to trade up. I honestly believe the Eagles did this because they wanted Bradford.

Love Kelly and love how he said Mariota is the best qb in the draft.

He's not supposed to say that, and he knows it. He just doesn't give a sh!t. He says it like it is and doesn't come off pompous. That presser was awesome

Chip?  Or the OP?

  1. Mariota is unlikely to make it to #6

ESPN's John Clayton essentially guaranteed that the Redskins would take Oregon QB Marcus Mariota if he's available at the No. 5 overall pick.

Clayton said there's no way Mariota would last until the Jets' No. 6 overall pick. "(Redskins owner) Dan Snyder might not think there’s quarterback issues, (but) Jay Gruden and everyone else in the front office thinks there’s quarterback issues," Clayton said. It's not a surprise the Redskins' revised front office is already questioning Robert Griffin III's future in Washington, but this will be a moot point if Mariota is a top-four pick, as expected.

Either way. He's showing he's a complete amateur.

Or the assumption that a guy who obviously doesn't think he needs to pay retail for offensive skill position talent was going to give us all the draft picks for Mariota because Oregon was just dumb in the first place.

There was more to that if you read the full quote. It was based on Clayton's own guess based on their situation. It wan't based on a leak.

“Honestly, [people say Mariota] may fall to the Jets; he’s not gonna fall to the Jets at six, I’ll tell you this right now,” Clayton said. “The Redskins will take him at [No.] five. Dan Snyder may not think there’s quarterback issues; Jay Gruden and everybody else in the front office thinks there’s quarterback issues. And if Marcus Mariota falls to five – now it’s not a position where they’re desperate enough to trade up to get him – but if he falls to 5, I’m telling you this right now, they’ll take him.”

He may be right and he may not. But it's not any more valid than a skins fan making the same assertion.

he's full of sh-t.

I'd believe that Kelly is a woman long before I'd believe that claim.   :winking0001:

actually there is a rumor in PHL that he is gay... so who knows he might go bruce jenner on us. speaking of jenner, heard a funny joke: did you know bruce jenner had a perfect driving record? then he became a woman...

No fewer than four NFL general managers will gather in Eugene, Ore., Thursday to witness the Oregon pro day featuring star quarterback Marcus Mariota Thursday.

New York Jets GM Mike Maccagnan, Washington Redskins GM Scot McCloughan, Tennessee Titans GM Ruston Webster and Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht will be on hand, according to NFL Media insider Albert Breer. Breer also notes Bucs director of player personnel Jon Robinson is with Licht; Jets director of college scouting Rex Hogan is with Maccagnan; and McCloughan is on his own.

NFL Media's Gil Brandt reports all 32 teams have reps at the Oregon pro day, and that Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt is among those on the scene.

What's notable about this is at least three of the teams with GMs in attendance figure to have some interest in a quarterback in the first round of the draft. The Bucs hold the No. 1 overall pick, followed by Tennessee at No. 2, and the Jets hold the No. 6 pick.

It illustrates a high level of interest not only in Mariota, but in other top Ducks prospects such as defensive lineman Arik Armstead, injured cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, and offensive linemen Jake Fisher and Hroniss Grasu. Alabama hosted representatives from all 32 NFL clubs for its pro day Wednesday, but only one general manager -- the New York Giants' Jerry Reese -- was in attendance.

Still, for all the interest in Mariota, what he says to NFL clubs before and after the pro day might do as much to help his draft status as what he does with the football during it.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly, who coached Mariota in college, won't be at the Oregon pro day, according to Breer. Kelly is known to put in extensive travel attending pro days, but Wednesday he shot down speculation that the Eagles are interested in trading up in the draft to acquire the quarterback.
