Lil Woody
Yes, he's declined. No, he's not going to do much for us as a player. But we only have 1 center, who let's be honest...is just a guy. Let them battle it out. Bring back Mangold on a cheap vet deal if he's open to it and let's try to do right by at least one player that gave his heart and soul to this team. If they want to draft another OC next year, great, we should have done it this year...but what's the harm in seeing if he wants back in for another year of football? Or are we really going to just roll the dice on 1 jag center for the season? I mean unless you are telling me Dakota Dozier is up for the job....in which case I'd like to buy some weed from you. joewilly12
Jets' center Wesley Johnson is preparing to take over for his 'big brother' Nick Mangold Tweet email Wesley Johnson will line up as the team’s starting ceter this season. (WINSLOW TOWNSON/AP) For the past 11 years, as the Jets’ revolving door at starting quarterback whirled around and around with each passing season, fans could rely on the man snapping the ball, No. 74, center Nick Mangold. Mangold was the offense’s anchor and a football savant with the kind of expansive and detailed knowledge that left younger offensive lineman in disbelief. A first-round pick in 2006, Mangold missed just four starts out of 160 in his first 10 seasons in the NFL. He was the model of consistency at one of the most important yet underrated positions in the league. But Mangold is gone now, one of the many veterans whose Jets careers ended this past offseason as general manager Mike Maccagnan began a full-fledged rebuild for a franchise still seeking its first Lombardi Trophy since the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. And the player tasked with supplanting Mangold in the middle of the O-line - fourth-year lineman Wesley Johnson - is fully aware of the enormous hole he must fill. “He’s a guy that you don’t replace,” Johnson told the Daily News last week at Jets training camp in Florham Park. Jets’ Wesley Johnson signs restricted free agent tender And yet there’s reason for optimism. Mangold was meticulous at helping and aiding younger players, and he was instrumental in Johnson’s development in 2016. “He was like my big brother,” Johnson said. Last season, as Mangold battled multiple injuries and was placed on injured reserve for the first time in his career, Johnson started eight games and played significant time in three other contests after Mangold went down, first with a tweaked knee and then with a sprained ankle that eventually ended his season. Even after landing on IR Dec. 8, though, Mangold was often at Jets practice, pacing the sideline in a walking boot. Former Jet Nick Mangold weighs in on possibility of joining Pats The Jets released Mangold this offseason after 11 seasons with the team. (SZAGOLA/CSM/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK/SZAGOLA/CSM/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK) “He always looked after the young guys. It was tough love. He was hard to deal with sometimes. But he always looked out for us,” Johnson said of Mangold. “He got put on IR at the end of the year. When most guys get put on IR, they check out: ‘I’m going to go spend time with my family.’ He didn’t. He was in my back pocket every practice, every game, and that meant the world to me because I have (offensive line coach Steve) Marshall and I have (assistant offensive line coach David Diaz-Infante), but I (also) have a guy who I think is a Hall of Famer telling my what I did wrong and what I did right every play.” Johnson opted not to share any of the “tough love” moments. “I want to keep his memory shining,” the former fifth-pick of the Steelers said with a chuckle. Nonetheless, it’s clear the two linemen developed a strong bond off the field. In the locker room last season, Mangold and Johnson would walk around with Nerf guns, looking for opportunities to pester each other or their teammates. Nick Mangold doesn't need surgery, but Jets future still in doubt “He’s a big Star Wars guy,” Johnson said. “I’m more of a Game of Thrones guy. But I like Star Wars.” Most importantly, Johnson was able to pick Mangold’s brain and gain an understanding of the type of studying and expertise necessary to be a successful NFL center. Johnson is currently slated as the Jets’ starting center, according to Todd Bowles. But as is the case with virtually every position on the Jets roster, Johnson will have to continue earning his job for the remainder of training camp. “The thing that I was most immediately impressed about Nick was his knowledge of the game and how smart he was,” Johnson said. “He knew the whole offense and then he knew stuff that offensive linemen have absolutely no business knowing, and he was able to correlate it all and make the right calls, be consistent every single play. He was incredibly consistent, and I think that’s the goal for offensive linemen.” Wesley Johnson (r.) will attempt to open up lanes for running back Bilal Powell (l.) this season. (BILL KOSTROUN/AP) Initially, Johnson said Mangold’s football IQ was daunting. Christian Hackenberg shines in Jets’ Green and White scrimmage “He says all this stuff, and you’re like, ‘Man, I don’t know what that means,’” Johnson said. “But you sit down and you piece it up, you learn it, and you see how he gets it. You see why he was in the league for 11 years, how he got such great experience and you begin to see the pictures the way he sees it.” On the field last season, Johnson impressed the Jets coaching staff with his play. “Wes is a very good NFL player,” Steve Marshall said. “I saw a lot of good things from him. He’s a natural leader. He’s very athletic, he’s smart, and he’s kind of got all the attributes you want in an NFL player.” Johnson’s biggest takeaway from his extended action in 2016 was learning to control his emotions. Jets sign Devon Still to add depth to defensive line “When you go out there your first few games, you’re just chomping at the bit. You’re snarling, you’re snorting and you just want to go after it, show that you can play,” he said. “You got to be calm. You got to make the calls. You got to be in control, and you got to really take charge of what everybody’s doing.” Mangold was in control for over a decade. Now Johnson is striving to do the same. Larz
LORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Nick Mangold's season is over - and so might his tenure with the New York Jets. The star center was placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury Thursday after aggravating it during the Jets' 41-10 loss to Indianapolis on Monday night. He was flying to North Carolina on Thursday to visit orthopedic specialist Dr. Robert Anderson to get another look at his sprained right ankle. "He's hurting pretty good," coach Todd Bowles said, adding that surgery could be an option. "Depending on what the doctors say," Bowles said, "I'm sure it could be." The team decided to shut down Mangold, who will be replaced by Wesley Johnson at center. Johnson filled in as the starter for four games after Mangold initially injured his ankle against Baltimore on Oct. 23. The 32-year-old Mangold, I don't know if he had the surgery, but the ravens have a pretty good roster but no center, I would think that would be a place for him if his wheel was any good I also suspect Mangold and Decker might have told the jets they would rather be released than take a pay cut. That's what Marshall and Harris did. I would rather Nick stay retired, so he has a clean tenure of only playing for the jets and I don't want to see him back up in his last year

I'm with you on rather seeing him stay retired, than play elsewhere. But I'd rather have him be a part of this organization and let him go out on his own terms when he's ready rather than us just cutting him out. If he's unwilling to come back on the cheap...oh well. But if he'd rather play football than surf channels on the couch....I'd be happy to see him back in the mix. I get the business side comes first. But the business side has pretty much spoken. If he chooses the Ravens on their terms, I'd understand that too. Way more preferable than seeing Harris playing for that sleazy franchise in beantown. Warfish
Westley is a very average player, and we better hope McClown has his track shoes on, he's going to be running alot this year. But no, the ship sailed on Mangold, it's over.
Tony MaC
Great Jet, HoF contender, Ring of Honor shoo-in, but its time to move on. They're goin with Johnson, either he's a bridge to another better guy or he's the answer for several years but that's what we're goin with now. Hell I'm fine with just going in with 8 OL. I mean besides, BEachum, Carpenter, Johnson, Winters, Shell, Ijilana and hopefully the rookie Leamon....do we really have anyone worth keeping? Couldn't we just add almost anybody off the FA scrap heap after cuts and instantly improve over those other guys?
Beerfish
Johnson sucks. We have two decent guards and 3 atrocious holes on the oline otherwise. NYDreamer
To be honest with you I was hoping the Jets would have drafted either Ethan Pociac out of LSU or Elfien out of Ohio State this year. Both of these guys were instrumental in the run game for their respective squads. Last year I was hoping for Nick Martin out of Notre Dame in the 2nd round who the Texans jumped up and grabbed right before us. With none of those guy's coming in I am fine with starting Wesley Johnson, let's see if this young team can grow together. A few months ago, Willie Colon mentioned him as a capable leader on that line. Let's see what we have.

flgreen
Love Nick. One of my all time favorite players. It's time for Nick to move off to the booth. Mangold has made a good bit of money in his career. Don't think he has wasted it on on 23 Bentley's, or his posse. IMO Mangold would play if someone were to cough up 8-10 M $, and that's why he's unsigned, otherwise he's good for retirement. Hope the the NY media can keep him around in some non-football job, but IMO he's done in the NFL
