Jets Add TE Ryan Griffin

He's a steady Eddy type, except when he's drinking, which I'm sure he won't be on Sundays. He makes Tomlinson expendable so this signing is a win, win. He's a Tomlinson clone with more catches & less negative plays.

That “crappy” song has set records and is either 3x multi-platinum, or the first song to hit diamond in 22 years depending on what source you believe.

Some y’all are just old farts.

Two things that never should be confused with each other are record sales and quality.

Justin Beber, Spice Girls, Jonas Bros, I could go on and on naming all the talentless acts that have multi-platinum records and could do the same with all the incredibly talented acts that for some reason don't make it

He has 7 TDs in 77 games.

Could be telling.

But I learned something a long time ago, what they've done in the past without knowing the player well enough can make it moot.

Rangers traded for Adam Graves who at the time had 7 or so seasons under his belt, 9 goals being his best year.  Heard Sather talk him up and took it as GM speak and then he led the Rangers to a Cup with 50+ goals.

Not saying it means anything here just what a player did somewhere else isn't the end all.

His catch percentage is pretty bad.  Tall and slow.  He is probably everything we can hope for out of Wesco.  Interesting that Darren Fells is part of the reason the Texans dumped him, since that is who Gase really wanted.

Tall, old, and slow :(

I don't think that Joe Douglas ever said anything about high character.  He said that he was going to emphasize guys that loved football and put the game first.  All this drunken sh*t doesn't necessaril contradict that.

Listen to his interviews again.  He almost always references "high character".

Why wouldn’t he also get suspended for the beginning of the season?

This was my first thought, but the charges against him were dismissed and he's been placed in the NFL's substance abuse program. At this late date, with other suspensions being handed out already, have to figure the Jets had assurances from the league that he'd be available opening day.

He's here for camp, has a chance to behave and get a few games which can lead to something here or elsewhere. If he becomes a problem in camp he gets cut. It's all up to him.

Agreed. Low risk, potential decent reward. I like the signing.

Ryan Griffin contract details: Nothing guaranteed for Jets' new TE

The Jets signed former Texans tight end Ryan Griffin to a one-year deal. Now we know how much he’ll make.

After being waived by Houston following an arrest during the 2019 NFL draft in Nashville, Griffin will make only $1.125 million with the Jets this season, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Griffin’s deal includes a non-guaranteed base of $1 million. The cap charge to Gang Green is $1.375 million because it includes $250,000 in likely to be earned incentives.

Griffin will help stop the bleeding in the tight end room caused by Chris Herndon’s four-game suspension. Griffin joins a tight end group that includes Eric Tomlinson, Daniel Brown and Trevon Wesco, a trio that are primarily blocking tight ends.

Griffin, along with Temuchin Hodges, who was added on Wednesday, give the Jets some capable pass-catchers at the tight end position. Griffin gives New York a red zone threat, as all seven of his career touchdowns have come within 20 yards of the end zone.

In March 2017, the Texans signed Griffin to a three-year, $9 million contract that included $3.22 million guaranteed. Signing with the Jets, Griffin was forced to take a pay cut on a one-year, prove-it deal.

Now with the Jets, Griffin has a oppurtunity to win a starting job with Herndon out for the first four games. For Griffin to earn his money with Gang Green, he is going to need to win a 53-man roster spot outright. A non-guranteed base salary puts the pressure on Griffin to make the team.

I don't know why people are selling Wesco short.  He played in an offense that required him to block more than catch.  Doesn't mean he can't do it.  Maybe the scouts saw something that we didn't?

He didn't get a volume of throws in college, that's for sure.  But when he WAS targeted he typically made the catch and made some things happen with the ball.  I really like Wesco and think given an opportunity he'd become a fan favorite.  Seems like a hardworking, lunch pail kinda guy.

Also saw that the Jets signed Bucky Hodges in addition to Ryan Griffin.  We've got what, at least 5 or 6 TEs on the roster now all with slightly different backgrounds and capabilities.  Herndon and Wesco (as a rookie) seem to locks to make the team.  But how many of Tomlinson, Griffin and Hodges will be kept?
