2014 NFL draft re-draft (If Idzik knew then what he knows now)

I've been reading a lot about how Idzik sucked balls this past draft, so I thought I'd take a look at the players he could have drafted instead, and this is what I came up with. Overall, it sucks.

Rd. 1: Kelvin Benjamin (28) [instead of Calvin Pryor (18)]:

Stats:

Benjamin-- 21 receptions, 329 yards, 15.7 YPC, 15.7 avg, 82 YPGA

Pryor: 17 total tackles, 0 INTs, 0 FFs, .5 sacks, 2 PD

Pre-draft Scuttlebutt: The "draft guru" opinion had Benjamin falling into Rd. 2 because of a supposed inability to separate and poor hands. While Benjamin has dropped his share of passes, he has shown athleticism and size that is impossible to teach, and looks to be a nightmare match-up moving forward. Pryor has been as advertised--a guy who will help out in the box, but has been awful in coverage.

Who Tom Wanted: Teddy Bridgewater (32), to give an alternative to Geno. Currently, Bridgewater has the Minnesota Vikings coaches and fan base all pumped up over his potential after leading the team to a victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Geno has Jets fans all atwitter to give the awful Mike Vick a starting job.

Alternate pick: Darqueze Dennard (24)--Currently playing part-time for the Bengals defense; has 4 tackles and 1 sack. Marvin Lewis called him the "best rookie corner [he] ever coached."

Verdict: Awful-- The early returns suggest it's a huge miss so far. Pryor has been made to look silly by the Packers and Lions, and targeting him in coverage only figures to become a more convenient tactic for opposing QBs. Meanwhile, Benjamin's size and leaping ability could have served as a nice complement on the outside to the efficient Eric Decker and the shifty Jeremy Kerley.

Rd. 2: Jimmy Garoppolo (62) [instead of Jace Amaro (49)]:

Stats:

Garoppolo: 6/7, 70 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, 147.9 QBr

Amaro: 11 receptions, 125 yds, 0 TDs

Pre-draft Scuttlebutt: The "draft guru" opinion was that Garoppolo was deficient in too many areas (weird release, size, arm strength, funky collegiate system) to be considered before the third round (despite early buzz). Amaro was also from a funky system where, like Garoppolo, was prolific, but he wasn't asked to block and was considered something of a project. Several mocks had Amaro in the first round.

Who Tom wanted: DeAnthony Thomas, RB/WR/KR, Oregon. I thought Thomas could be that dynamic, versatile LeShon McCoy-type back that could complement Ivory and Powell, while keeping the ineffective Jeremy Kerley away from kick and punt returns. Currently, Thomas is injured, but showed flashes in preseasons on punt returns.

Alternate pick: Jarvis Landry (63)-- Landry currently has a modest 12 catches for 111 yards, with no TDs. He recently took over as the Dolphins primary slot receiver.

Other alternative: Trade up for Jordan Matthews (42), 15 receptions, 141 yards, 2 TDs. Playing in Chip Kelly's high-octane passing attack, Matthews has looked nice.

Verdict: The Right Pick-- Amaro has started slow, but has shown some flashes of late while playing in an otherwise destitute offense. As his playing time increases (at the expense of the ineffective Jeff Cumberland), Amaro will have the chance to show the form that led him to catch over 100 passes last season at Texas Tech.

Rd 3: Gabe Jackson (81) [over Dexter McDougle (80)]:

Stats:

Jackson/McDougle: Nil,  but Jackson starts for the Raiders.

Pre-draft scuttlebutt: There wasn't much buzz regarding McDougle, as he was injured for most of his senior year. Jackson was considered the 1st- or 2nd-ranked guard prospect in the draft, citing his road-grader ability.

Alternate pick: John Brown (WR, Cardinals, 91)-- Burned the Niners for two TD catches and has 9/109/3 TDs on the season. Literally zero Jets fans knew who John Brown was before two weeks ago, so GFYs.

Verdict: Looks Shltty-- Jackson looks like a ten-year starter for Oakland, while we may never actually see McDougle take a substantive snap for the Jets due to his knee injury.

Rd 4: Bruce Ellington (106) [over Jalen Saunders (104)];

Stats:

Saunders--puke

Ellington--Meh

Pre-draft Scuttlebutt: While Ellington was a productive, exciting player at South Carolina, Saunders was a dwarf who bounced between Oklahoma and USC, and whose highlight reel consisted of him showing oodles of grit while run-blocking.

Verdict: Brutal-- Ellington has yet to carve out a niche in the 49ers offense, but returns kicks and punts for them. Saunders, meanwhile, was an outright disaster of a pick from the start--from crashing his car in the midst of a mysterious seizure to muffing two punts before getting mercifully waived last week. If/when John Idzik is fired, this pick will be mentioned in his career eulogy.

Rd. 4 DeAnthony Thomas (124) [over Shaq Evans (115)]:

Stats:

Thomas: He's been out with a hamstring, but...

Evans: IR after a preseason where he couldn't catch or pick up the offense, so much so that they effectively redshirted him on IR.

Pre-draft Scuttlebutt: Thomas was an enigma--too small, didn't put up great triangle numbers at the Combine, and didn;t throw up a blazing 40 time, but the tape on him was filthy. Evans was a JAG prospect all the way, who may some day develop into a WR3.

Verdict: Incomplete-- It remains to be seen if either of these players can stay healthy, and what they can ultimately contribute.

Rd. 4 Aaron Lynch (150) [over Dakota Dozier (137)]:

Stats:

Lynch: 2 tackles and a blocked punt in part-time duty.

Dozier: Nil

Pre-draft Scuttlebutt: Lynch is a psychopath who got tossed from Notre Dame and ended up in South Florida's pre-penitentiary program; a physical marvel with a ten-cent brain. Dozier is a strong dude who needs seasoning.

Verdict: Incomplete-- If Lynch can keep it together, he looks like he can be a disruptive freak on the outside who could eventually make Aldon Smith expendable. Dozier, meanwhile, can't get playing time behind two of the NFL's worst guards and looks to be getting a redshirt year.

Rd. 5 Caraun Reid (158) [over Jeremiah George (154)]:

Stats:

Reid: 2 tackles

George: Nil

Pre-draft scuttlebutt: Reid was considered talented, if undersized (at 6'2), while George was a supermystery.

Verdict: Awful-- Reid played well in the preseason, and will likely take over Donkey Kong Suh's position when Detroit loses him this offseason. Meanwhile, George was snapped up off the practice squad by Jacksonville, which makes you think there's a Seahawks connection regarding his scouting (Idzik and Jags HC Gus Bradley both former Seahawks).

Rd. 6 Seantrel Henderson (237) over Brandon Dixon (195), Quincy Enunwa (209), IK Enkempali (210) Tajh Boyd (213), Trevor Reilly (233)

Stats:

Henderson--Starts for the Bills

Dixon, Enunwa, Enkempali, Boyd, Reilly-- Bupkus, except for Reilly's 4 special teams tackles

Pre-draft Scuttlebutt: Henderson was considered a moody, petulant, uncoachable douche at Miami with first-round talent but UDFA heart. Enunwa was an intriguing size/speed developmental prospect; Enkempali was who knows; Boyd was Seth Ryan's roomie; Reilly was a productive outside rusher in a sh*t conference.

Verdict: Whatever--Considering that no player actually gets pushed at Club Rex, it's doubtful that Henderson would have received the hard coaching as a Jet that he clearly needed. Reilly has been a scrappy special teamer and has been progressively stealing more defensive snaps from the invisible Calvin Pace and Coples the Friendly Ghost LB. Enunwa may well serve a suspension for domestic violence. Enkempali showed good pass rush technique in preseason, but needs some seasoning on the practice squad. Boyd was an embarrassment of a pick by a halfwit head coach who treats the draft like he's recruiting fresh pledges for his personal frat, and is the poster-boy for the Jets organizational dysfunction.

Once again, like the guy from Walter Football said:

"It doesn't appear as though the Jets understand the value aspect of the draft. They see players they like, and they take them, completely ignoring the fact that they can obtain better prospects at earlier picks all while still securing the players they covet much later."

Even if Pryor and Amaro bust, at least they were taken at the approximate spots they should have been. My bigger problem lies with taking UDFA types in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Some of those were complete head scratchers. I'd have much preferred to grab Moncrief and Ellington with our 3rd and early 4th than an injury prone CB nobody ever heard of, and a 150 lb scrub who we cut in the first quarter of the season. We then could have used our second 4th rounder on a talented project CB with upside, like a Keith McGill or Pierre Desir type. I also would have used some of our later picks to shore up positions of need (like CB) with talented guys who dropped due to character issues, like Purifoy or Roberson from UF.

I'm far from the smartest guy in the room, but I genuinely believe the Jets would have a much brighter future if they just handed the keys to the franchise over to me, if the alternative is to have the current clown regime running the show.

Denard - Garapolo and Jackson - those were my first 3 picks

We didn't need a safety> Allen was playing fine and progressing nicely. What we needed desperately was a CB.

Garapolo was there for the taking in Round 2 . He is light years a better prospect than the scrub we have. Garapolo falls into the Pats hands and will punish the Jets for years to come.

Jackson is a monster man. After Winters was man handled last year, how could Idziot be so stupid to let Jackson slip right through his fingers.

Idziot will set this team back for years with his horrific drafting.  Besides Milliner, Richardson and trading for Ivory, his drafting of players has been pathetic.

With a few good drafts, this team could have been on its way. Now its just a mediocre, lack of talent, low depth team that is never going to seriously compete

with the upper echelon of the NFL.

But for every draft pick cut think of the cap savings!

Not if he has to catch him first

Pryor can't cover anyone.

meh...covering is for non defensive genious amateurs, only a defensive mastermind would figure out the best way to use a playmaking safety is to put him at the line of scrimmage every play to pad all important run defense stats

i liked our 1st 2nd,dozier,and our 7th, Reilly will be a good player I think he will be like AA give him a  year or two  he will be good aside from those 4 players we wasted picks we could have taken much better WR and still taken Mc in the 4th this scout team needs a lot of work to do.

When you swing and miss on two drafts in a row, it sets your organization back by 5 years. Idzik needs to be canned ASAP. If we can gather that a 4th rounder is sh*tty and cut bait with them only 4 months after drafting them, why can't we realize the same with our GM and fire him two years after hiring him?

Tackles and such-overrated. Also, pass defense and passing the ball-not a big deal. If you can stop the rush and run the ball you can win 6 games, little luck push that to 8 or 9, voila keep your job and Woody Johnson's Mostly Nonplayoff Happy Holiday Camp. You can even have a cool pizza party in the lockerroom week 17 with jumping around like sugared up preteen  girls at a One Direction show and stuff.
