How about Matt McGloin?

I'd rather take McGloin over Hoyer - he has room to grow as a qb. Plus the McGroin references here would be non-stop.

I'm a PSU fan, watched him play a ton. He has no room to grow as a QB. It's amazing that he has managed to become a serviceable backup QB in the NFL. His best case scenario is a Ryan Fitzpatrick type of career.

With that said, Mcgloin or Hoyer, it's all the same.

He has some starts but really not too many so you really don't know how well he would do if he's a starter. But it's a good option to consider. If the Jets signed a Cutler and wanted an experienced backup over Petty he could be no. 2 Qb with Hack as no. 3. It would all depend on how the Jets evaluate Petty and Hack.

Agreed. It was amazing what O'Brien did for him, but that is all that is there

Keep sleeping on Hoyer.  Matt McGloin is something like 1-6 as a starter 11/11 TD/INT and never had a 300 yard game.  Hoyer had like 9 300 yard games, 44/26 TD/INT and I believe he has a winning record as a starter.  Hoyer is way bigger and I think he just has more tools.  Negatives on Hoyer are that he is not a franchise guy, won't go 0-16/2-14 and that playoff game he had against KC.  Ouch. Postive is that he should be cheap and a value for the money.

I'd welcome him as a backup.

The point of the thread was more of an esoteric commentary on arguing trash vs. trash.

Well that isn't happening Hoyer to the 9ers on a multi year deal. This other guy may be looked at along with every other QB that is left.

I mean, we're splitting hairs over backups around the league.... Glennon, Hoyer... McGloin is a guy I'd rather add to the QB room over Hoyer.

Matt McGloin didn't even come to my mind as a possible option. Very low ceiling, and I'm not in the mood to see Ryan Fitzpatrick 2.0 this season. However, are we that against geno? I'm very intrigued to pit him, petty, and hack against each other this preseason and allow competition to grant the position to whoever earns it. Realistically we are not a team that is contending for the Super Bowl or even the playoffs really next year, there's a lot of unproven players (which I definitely see some potential in though). Why not let the young guys compete and see what happens? Worse case scenario we end up with a high draft pick next year AKA Sam Darnold.
