If I was an owner of a NFL team in today's NFL, I would NEVER hire a HC, OC or DC that had a "system".  I would have a coach that builds a system around the players they have (like the CHeatriots) Just too much turnover, CAP issues and lack of NFL preparation in college to realistically build a team around a specific system like the WC offense or the bear defense. Even if you are a "Tampa 2" guy at heart you really can't play that system until you have the mike and will so you need to incorporate some of those philosophies in a system that works for the players you have,

Baltimore with Jackson is the poster child for this. Their offense is built entirely around his skill set and the backups are like mini-Jacksons. However, as impressive as it can be. it has not been shown that you can sustain success with this style as the QB eventually gets beaten down, loses a step and then they are just mediocre pocket QBs like Newton and Kapernick and RGIII became.

One of the things I hate about the NFL is that it is rife with buddy-buddy and nepotism situations.  So you virtually always get these guys who are married to their System and are part of “The Club” and there just might be and probably are some brilliant football minds who are right now on the outside looking in, and might always will be.

Gase was praised as a “genius” by Nick Saban when it’s now obvious that all he did for Saban was probably kiss his a** all day long, coupled with good back stabbing tendencies being the sc*mbag that he really seems to be is the way Gase was able to improbably climb the NFL ladder having never even personally played football at above the High School level.  Then you had another sc*mbag Peyton Manning pick up the phone and vouch for his buddy Gase to the most clueless, idiot now “Owner” in the NFL, that’s when his brother is not around, Chris Johnson...who took the bait hook line and sinker.  Why anyone in the Jet Organization would ever listen to Peyton Manning after what he did to them...I don’t know.

Another example is Todd Bowles.  I was going off on what a nightmare train wreck of a “coach” he was and that the ONLY way he could ever be hired at a level higher than a lowly assistant (which he was for OVER 20 YEARS) would be if his good friend Arlans hooked him up.  That was obvious, the guy couldn’t make 1 adjustment.  I said that the only reason his D in AZ performed well was because Bowles had about 9 All Pros on it.  I think I was actually called a “racist” by one of the posters on here for daring to say what a terrible coach Bowles is.

I just heard a stat today...Todd Bowles D in Tampa is ranked 31st in Points Allowed.  Next to LAST in the NFL.  Exactly as I thought would happen and posted that thought long ago.  How’d he get the job?  Who is the head coach in Tampa again?

You want to know how bad I feel the Jets situation right now is?

I’d take Todd Bowles to replace Adam Gase in the next second.

Also Jets fan: SEVEN GAMES IS ENOUGH. FIRE UP THE “FIRE THIS COACH” GOFUNDME PAGE

You're onto something, however good teams are good not because they don't fire failures but because they don't hire said failures in the first place.

Jackson is fun to watch and he'll win games but his style of play is not sustainable. Look at Cam. A freak that won with his athleticism and after a few too many hits it's all over.

Can you believe Cam just turned 30 in May? Seems like he's been around 15 years.

Ravens are the best run organization in the nfl

They don’t get the help from the refs the patriots do every week

Keep hearing people say this over and over

A player like Lamar you have a 4-5 year window

Can I get a 4-5 year window where the jets are good?

Until this year, Cam has had 8 NFL seasons and just 6 missed games. Sam missed how many for mono? Come on now. Bring some facts.

You have a 4-5 year window with every good QB unless you can find a way to pay him under the table to keep his cap number below $20m after his rookie deal.

In a way the 4-5 year window is a good thing because you can instead of having to pay him $130 million you can move on to a successor

The chiefs are gonna get killed by the Mahomes contract

Problem with a growing salary cap is whenever they raise it by $10m like 7.5 of it goes to QBs lol

Not to toot my horn, but before the draft last year I did not like Darnold (I'm behind him now as our QB). Jackson was my guy. I was all for taking him at #6. I don't care what the draftniks say. I don't care about rankings and all of that bullsh*t. If you believe strongly in a QB, you take him as soon as you can.

That's why I never faulted the Giants for the Daniel Jones pick this year. I respect the guts that took.

me too. but we sold the farm on a limited guy with limitd experience and all the excuses for his performance that it comes with. he was never extraordinary in any way. LJ on the other hand is obviously extraordianry. you just had to watch for ten minutes to see it,

and while the team decided to choose him its obvious that you had to run teh offense to get most out of him. we tried running wildcat when falk was in cos he sucked balls. we ran wildcat with brad smith and it was effective. LJ doesnt have extraordinary players around him. he has a competent OL, yes. otherwise...   nothing extraordinarly at all.

he is the stick that stirs that drink. period. HE MAKES THE WHOLE TEAM BETTER.

Sam is an excuse meme generator.

While Sam is a nightmare to watch 3/4 of the time and his style of play gives the other team the ball and the advantage.

Cam ran like a FB. LJ makes guys miss and takes mostly glancing hits and often runs OOB.

The Ravens are one of the most solid outfits in the NFL the past 20+ years. Annually they've been in the playoffs or in the hunt.

Now it could be Jackson is better than Mayfield, Darnold and Allen - the 2018 QBs drafted before him. At the moment that's case closed. But let's wait 5 years before we put him or any of the other '18 QBs in Canton or the bust scrap heap.

But I don't think I'm going out on a limb here, and this is taking nothing away from his Jackson's special, exciting skills: his success is in no small measure a result of being in a rock solid, functional NFL organization. Ya know, the antithesis of our Johnson-owned Jets. And Hess before him.

Put Darnold in Baltimore where they'd tailor their offense around him as they have with Jackson: I'm guessing he'd be faring a bit better than he is with this currently inept outfit known as the NY Jets.

Not only that. The Ravens have added players on OL when they’ve needed to. They also added Mark Ingram via FA and Hollywood Brown via draft to bolster their offense. I’ve always liked the Ravens. They’ve always been a tough minded team. The silver lining here is that our new GM was brought up in the Ozzie Newsome school of building a team. Hopefully he can get the job done.

These are the current Jets positions on offense where we have players starting who would likely not start on 90% of other NFL teams...

WR1, WR2, LT, C, RG, RT, TE1 (maybe).  That's 7 players and leaves only Bell, Crowder, Darnold and maybe Alex Lewis at RG.  Robby would be a WR3 on another team.  Ryan Griffin likely doesn't start anywhere else in the AFC except maybe Cleveland (with Njoku hurt) and Jax with Seth DeValve.

Am I way off with this?

Is Darnold currently playing with any more than 3 or 4 other guys on offense who should be legit NFL starters?

Exactly! Watch a Chiefs game like I did Sunday & you see Hill diving for a ball thrown too far by Moore & it goes for 40 yards. Hill, Watkins, Kelse, it's ridiculous the difference in quality offensive players & Olines. That Ravens Oline punched the Pats right in the mouth! Must have been a shock after playing the Jets & Dolphins sh*tshows. The Browns are 2-6 which is much worse than the Jets 1-7 because Mayfield has ObJ & Landry and Chubb. Since they lost Njoku he's struggled, Darnold hasn't had his TE Herndon all year, Griffin was just allowed to WALK away from the Texans, what does that tell you about his talent? Obrien has this team pointed to the playoffs & you just let a TE walk? The Jets are a horrible mix of misfits.

Yea, they think their defense sucks now? Wait until they see it when Mahomes gets his blockbuster contract! It's gonna be mind blowing what his agent demands.

Also, credit to Harbaugh for having the guts to commit to a non-traditional offense for Jackson and making it work. It wasn’t too long ago that Harbaugh’s job security was up in the air, but he still had the balls to stick with Lamar.

In retrospect, I would've traded last year's #1 pick (Quinnen) for John Harbaugh.  Oh well.

For the record, I did want us to bring Harbaugh in (though not for #3 overall) and I did think Lamar Jackson was a wildcard who could be really good.

Give him the rest of this season then fire the bum.  Let Joe D (who worked for the Ravens and the Eagles) make the football decisions going forward.  Let CJ hang out with Gase (since they're both alphas) and chat about things unrelated to football.

Cam takes a lot of hits.  Lamar makes his living avoiding contact.  I agree that running is inherently dangerous; a lot of torn ACL's come on non-contact injuries.  But this is how Lamar is going to play.  The Ravens will sink or swim with that at least as long as he's on his rookie deal.

It goes back to 2009.  Baltimore wouldn’t give REX the HC job. They gave it to a DB coach. They knew REX.  they drafted Flacco. They surrounded him with what he needed to succeed. We traded away all of Sanchez’s weapon of 2010.

They have been so better run than the Jets and it’s not even close.

Correct!  In order to sign one Santonio Holmes, we got rid of more than half the offensive roster, including several multiple pro bowlers.  Holmes never played another meaningful season and the Jets have been in a tailspin since!

L Jackson isnt better than the other QBs listed.  Hes different and on a much more talented and better coached team is winning more games.  He isnt a better QB than Baker, Darnold etc.  He still isnt a good passer of the ball but makes up for it with his legs and all around team

For all the Ravens hero worship going on here, it’s worth mentioning that they added the #2 ranked QB via QBase to a team that was already a playoff team.  A little different than adding a QB at the top of the draft to a dumpster fire.  Doesn’t help when you also trade 4 picks for that QB who, ultimately, is also a dumpster fire.

Cheatriots are the best because they value versatility over specialised superstars.

They'd take a guy who does five things well over another that does one or two exceptionally. Injuries are inevitable but how you perform in spite of them is not luck.

Except when they sign Moss or AB or Gordon or 86 or Hainsworth or........?
