Yep. They paid him like a mid-level number one wide receiver, which is what you wanted and seems fair. Not sure it will truly reset the market for other tight ends because the only ones even arguably in his class are Kelce and Ertz

In a previous thread I mentioned that Jarvis Landry makes $15.1M per (# 11 for WRs) and Kittle, who of course operates out of the slot a ton, should be getting about that much, too.

Good on the 49ers for making that deal.  I'm sure Jimmy Graham and Travis Kelce are both weeping right now, but the top-end TE salaries needed this kick in the pants.  Great news for elite under-30 guys like Mark Andrews, Evan Engram and Darren Waller.

Big boost to the TE position.  It's what Adams expects (boost over present #1).  Good luck with that Seattle.

Mark Andrews is a top 5 guy.  24 years old.

Andrews is very good. But he's not anywhere near in Kittle's class. Not anywhere near as good of a blocker, and not as threatening a receiver.

No, but last year was only his 2nd season in the league.  He's going to get better.

He won't get Kittle money.  But he won't just have to fall in line with what the previous top TEs were making, like Travis Kelce did.  He'll probably be able to command something like $12-13M per.

How he fares against Kittle twice this year will probably help to decide that matter.

Good thing the Jets passed on him like 11 times when they desperately needed a TE as this board would freak out over the contract.

I'd be more than happy to be paying George Kittle $15M per right now.

This idea that Jets fans don't want anybody to get paid is a complete myth.  The problem is the Jets never have anybody worth getting paid, particularly at premium positions (not since Revis, 10 years ago, at least - which Jets fans were in full support of when it happened).  And when guys DO get paid to stay or come here, it tends to end up being a situation like Muhammad Wilkerson or Trumaine Johnson.

If Darnold has even a top-20 QB season next year, just about everyone here will be clamoring for an extension.  The same would be true if Chris Herndon demonstrates he's a top 15 TE.

Hardly. The guy lives on IR.

Positional value gets fisted again lol

No one ever argued that a premier TE isn't a premium player.  Just like a pass-rushing DT is a premium player but a run-stuffing DT is not.

Only now are the top-end TEs going to start to get paid like they should have been all along.

Here's a question that I know I will regret asking, but what the hell.  Straight up, would you have rather had Kittle or Adams on the team for the next 5 years at $15MM/year?  Not that Adams would even consider that, but money aside, which of them would be more valuable to this team?

Kittle a million times over.  This would be a day of celebration on JN if Kittle was a Jet and just got signed to this exact same extension.

Kittle is essentially like a top 15 WR who is also an elite run-blocking TE.  That's a premium talent.  Best at his position, one which has a far more tangible impact than SS.

Chiefs closing in on signing Travis Kelce to long-term extension

It's Tight Ends Day in the NFL.

After George Kittle agreed to a massive five-year, $75 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers, it's Travis Kelce's turn to dive into the money pit.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Kansas City Chiefs are closing in on signing Kelce to a four-year extension keeping him in K.C. for the next six seasons, per sources informed of the situation.

Turning 31 in October, Kelce has two years left on his contract with salary cap figures of $11.2 million in 2020 and $9 million in 2021. The extension would take him well into the back half of his 30s.

Averaging $9.53 million on his five-year extension signed in 2016, the new deal is expected to pay the star tight end closer in line to his worth.

It will be interesting to see how close Kelce gets to Kittle's $15 million-per-year mark, given the five-year age difference between the two TEs. Rapoport noted on Inside Training Camp Live on NFL Network that while the average per year could be close between Kittle and Kelce, the structures of the deals are expected to be different.

Given that the tight end market has been woefully behind the worth of the top players at the position -- thanks largely to Rob Gronkowski taking a below-market deal early on in his career -- Kelce getting a deserved leap in payment is a positive development for the entire position group. Expect Zach Ertz in Philly to be the next TE in line for a big extension.

The Chiefs, during a pandemic, continue to lock down key starters after signing Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones to massive long-term deals.

A key target for Mahomes, Kelce is a pass-catching tight end who can box out corners and safeties and outrun linebackers. The five-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro player has generated four straight seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards. In two years with Mahomes at the helm, Kelce has generated 2,565 receiving yards and 15 TDs. These are wide receiver numbers.

Now Mahomes will have one of his favorite targets to throw to for years to come.

I don't know if I'd be paying a lot for a 31 year old TE when I got a qb like Mahomes back there.

Hopefully we'll add Herndon to the list soon enough, if he can stay on the field.
