That doesn’t change the fact Gase is still likely coaching for his job every week. And if Gase is going to stay in New York beyond 2020, he’ll need to overcome a historically bad start to do so. The Jets, who lost to the Cardinals, 30-10, on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, are now 0-5 for the third time ever. They started 0-5 in 1980 and finished 4-12. They started 0-8 in 1996 under Rich Kotite, and went 1-15. In two seasons under Gase, the Jets are 1-12 during the first half of the schedule. Kotite went 2-14 during the first half of his two seasons in New York, including 0-8 in his second (and final) season in 1996. In Gase’s nine losses in 2019, the Jets' margin of defeat was 17.1 points. Following a 20-point loss on Sunday, their average margin of defeat is 17.2 points in five losses in 2020. In Kotite’s two seasons, losses came by an average of 12.8 points. Sunday marked the sixth time he Jets have lost by 20 or more points since the start of 2019, which is the most in the NFL during that span. So as Jets CEO and acting own Christopher Johnson continues to evaluate the state of the team, will he ultimately decide Gase isn’t the head coach to lead the group? Here are reasons why Johnson should make that decision right now, plus the one reason Gase might stick around. Why they should: The play calling is still terrible The Jets actually scored a touchdown on a trip to the red zone on Sunday. Jamison Crowder converted on an 11-yard pass from Joe Flacco. But it took the offense three trips to the red zone before they finally got in the end zone. On their first visit, they failed to convert on consecutive third-and-1 and fourth-and-1 plays before turning the ball over on downs. On the second, following an interception by linebacker Avery Williamson that put them at the Arizona 10-yard line, the Jets couldn’t find any open passing options on three plays before kicking a field goal. Gase’s offense punted on fourth-and-1 twice within the first five minutes of the game. With the Jets trailing by 14 points early in the fourth quarter, Gase called a running play to Frank Gore on second-and-26. He lost a yard. The Jets punted two plays later and the Cardinals iced the game with a touchdown on their ensuing drive. When Gase actually got a little creative with a wide receiver reverse in the fourth quarter, Braxton Berrios ran for 13 yards. One play later, Gase called for a wide receiver pass, and it ended as a 16-yard sack. Why they should: The Jets are getting gashed by opposing offenses While Gase’s offense has been an issue, the Jets' defense hasn’t been any better. Opposing teams — specifically quarterbacks — are tearing them to shreds. Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen set a career high with 312 passing yards in a Week 1 win over the Jets, and he added another 57 rushing yards. Cardinals QB Kyler Murray threw for a career-high 375 yards in Sunday’s win. In Week 4, Denver Broncos third-string quarterback Brett Rypien tossed for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Some of those failures fall of the shoulders of defensive coordinator Gregg Williams — he’s the one calling those plays after all — but Gase still has responsibility there. Why they should: Don’t repeat the Maccagnan mistake Johnson has admitted he waited too long in firing of former GM Mike Maccagnan. Johnson fired him following the 2019 NFL Draft, with the bulk of the offseason work already done, and the acting owner has said that was a mistake. Firing Gase now rather than at the end of the season likely won’t have any impact on the 2021 Jets. But the point remains the same: if Johnson knows a change needs to be made, make it. There’s no benefit in delaying the inevitable, especially is a season that clearly isn’t going anywhere. Why they should: It worked for the Texans The Texans pulled the plug on Bill O’Brien following an 0-4 start, and in their first game under Romeo Crennel on Sunday, they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 30-14, for their first victory of 2020. Are the Jets as talented as the Texans? Of course not. And the Texans lost games to the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings before O’Brien was sent packing. But sometimes that change just needs to be made. Why they shouldn’t: A coaching change isn’t altering the reality of the Jets' season And that brings us to the one thing going for Gase. Nothing the Jets do right now will change the reality of 2020: they’re a bad football team. Due to years of poor drafting during the Maccagnan era and the lack of any successful additions big-name players in recent seasons, the Jets are still a long way from being competitive. GM Joe Douglas needs another full offseason (and then some) to continue overhauling the roster. It doesn’t matter if Gase or defensive coordinator Gregg Williams or any other interim coach steering this ship right now. The Jets are still several difference-making players at multiple positions away from being a serious contender. Gase is now officially worse than Kotite. "Trip to the End Zone", lol. In the last 2 weeks, I've met 2 separate guys that work for the Jets (1 in security and 1 that provides mental health services to some of their players). They are in constant search of the perfection that can only be seen on a film review. They are not making “plays”. They are not playing loose. A real football coach would have identified by now what makes his players tick, and he’d be leaning on it. Literally every player on the Jets has regressed under Gase which makes it so hard to evaluate how good our talent is. To me this indicates a total lack of trust and confidence in the schemes/techniques that they're being taught. joewilly12 Posted October 12, 2020 Author Share Posted October 12, 2020 It was confusing why Gase was hired so quickly by the Jets after back-to-back losing seasons with the Miami Dolphins. His ballyhooed offense wasn’t very good in Miami, and the players weren’t big fans of his leadership style. Then his offense didn’t look very good with the Jets and his players don’t seem to be big fans of his leadership style. All the while, players like Ryan Tannehill, Kenyan Drake and DeVante Parker thrived once they were away from Gase. Maybe Sam Darnold takes a big leap, the Jets look like they’re turning a corner and New York’s move to hire him looks great. Photo credit (Bobby Ellis/Getty Images) Sam Darnold The Jets are 0-5, with a league-worst -86 point differential. Will they manage to win a game or two in 2020? Probably, but there's a very real chance that they'll have one of the top two picks in the 2021 NFL Draft. Anyone that secures the top pick in next year's draft will certainly take Lawrence, who is viewed as one of the top five quarterback prospects in the last 25 years. Things could get a little more interesting if the Jets end up with the No. 2 pick, and are faced with the choice of drafting Fields or trading back and moving forward with Darnold. If the Jets choose to go in another direction at quarterback, Darnold, the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, could be an interesting trade candidate for the 49ers. He seemingly hasn't gotten a fair shake because of the instability and incompetence of the Jets organization. It would be interesting to see if Shanahan and a more stable organization could allow Darnold to reach his ceiling. The only issue with the idea of trading for Darnold is that if acquired, the 49ers would have to make a decision on his fifth-year option before he ever played a game with the team. If they picked it up, they'd be on the hook for paying a hefty salary in 2022, even if things don't work out as anticipated in 2021. If not, the 49ers would either have to place the franchise tag on Darnold or let him test free agency after just one season with the team.
