Chad Alexander was promoted to the team’s assistant director of pro personnel in 2009, following six years as an area scout covering three regions of the country for the Ravens. He works closely with director of pro personnel Vincent Newsome in evaluating NFL talent, providing advance scouting reports on upcoming opponents for the coaching staff, and assisting with free agent workouts. For eight years, Chad annually represented the Ravens at the NFL Draft in New York.

I would like to once again reiterate that had the Jets fired Maccagnan in January, there's simply no way their front office looks as solid on paper as it does today. Probably looks more like toilet paper.

Lucky >>>>> Good

This is the post of the year.  Forget the week.  If they did this in January then they would not have any of this FO.  Props to CJ and Gase and Woody.

There's just the slight issue with the fact that it's a completely baseless claim. The idea that the Jets wouldn't have been able to hire the guy that no one else ever offered the job to 4 months earlier is absurd. Or is the assertion that the guy who has been out of the NFL for years wouldn't have come back at that time? Or perhaps that these same teams would have blocked guys from taking promotions then? The last one is the only option with the slightest bit of possibility to it, strictly as a matter of timing, which also happens to be the reason you often see new GMs restructure their front offices after their first draft, just as Douglas could have. Bottom line, none of it in any way justifies what was still a mind-numbingly stupid decision to retain the known failure of Maccagnan in January.

Can't we just be pleased with the current circumstances without needing to resort to ridiculous revisionist history that's desperate to make even the most idiotic decisions look like a hidden brilliance? CJ himself has openly admitted that it only happened this way because of how far he had his head up his ass while supposedly "running" things these last 2 years. That merits no praise.

Not in any way, shape, or form trying to turn the move into some sort of "hidden brilliance." Said more than once that it's better to be lucky than good. But there's no way the Jets front office looks this good, with this much potential synergy, if Johnson is hiring both a GM and head coach back in January. In fact, CJ has since said that he didn't fire Mac at the same time as Bowles, at least in part, because it would've been too daunting to hire both positions at once.

Douglas is here largely because Gase is here. Maybe only because Gase is here. Even if the Jets hire Gase first in January, are they already taking his input for the new GM the next day? Or do they hire the GM first (as most of us would've wanted), and who would've been on CJ's list without the coach's input?

Whether this new front office/coaching staff works remains to be seen, but the only way it comes together is CJ developing a comfort level with (and maybe a bit of a man-crush on) the alpha Adam Gase, and accepting Gase's vision of what the Jets front office should look like and executing that vision (for an unusually large amount of money for this franchise). There's just no way this comes together against the clock with other teams looking for head coaches and GMs at the same time in January.

It cost the team one extra off season with Maccagnan. An imperfect off season, but one where I think we can all agree the team looks better on paper. And for that cost, they've put together a front office of well-respected, top-tier candidates who, for the first time since Tanny/Sub-Genius, are actually 100% on the same page.

No. No way that could've happened in January.

The Eagles already stated that if they were asked in January then they would not have granted him permission to interview.  Also the guys we hired would not have been allowed to leave in January, onlyafter the draft.

As of January 14th, there would have been literally nothing the Eagles could have done to stop it, as their season was then over.  There's literally nothing that would have stopped Savage, considering he didn't have a job in the NFL.  Your assertions about Alexander and Hogan are pure assumption and, even if we were to make such an assumption, they could've just as easily been hired in April after the draft, while still giving the new GM the FA period and draft in the meantime.  There was absolutely no brilliance behind how this plan was executed in the slightest.  I absolutely hope it works out, and will beyond thrilled if it does, but the fictional storytelling going on about it is getting a bit ridiculous.

Fair enough, and I know your assertion was better lucky than good, which is why I actually didn't respond to you, but rather to the response that came after, which was suggesting great praise deserved for CJ because of this.  You're right that it's entirely possible that Douglas wouldn't have been the choice if not for the sequence of events, but if true, that only makes CJ even more of a bumbling idiot.  The hire was absolutely theoretically possible back in January, so my point is simply it not happening then isn't actually a good thing on anyone's resume.

If this all works out in the end, the extra offseason will still be obnoxious, but I would agree ultimately worth it.  That still doesn't mean we have to actually gleefully support such a mess being necessary just to make up for the overall incompetence of those running this team.

Gleefully support? No. Accept? Yeah, probably.

But this hire feels like the first one in a long time where the team wasn't choosing from the group of lesser candidates even willing to talk to this franchise. So there's that. Hopefully these guys live up to somewhere close to the hype, and the incompetent ones learn to stay out of their way.

If this process ends up in failure i’m at least happy that the Jets are finally investing heavily into building out a front office staff and coaching staff that are filled with talented and competent people.

A poor culture, skimping on the foundation of an organization, and meddling owners have been the real plague on this franchise for decades. At least i feel like we have a chance at sustainable success now.

A month ago we were the circus of the NFL. :)

The rest of the world couldn't recognize some genius moves that were happening right in front of their faces.  It confused them.  It's not until the plan comes together that they say, "Oh, wow....now I get it.  This actually looks good."

Whether CJ has evolved into some kind of football genius or remains an incompetent dolt will be determined as he is asked to manage the obvious conflicts that will arise between the coaches and front office along the way.  It's kumbaya time now, but it is almost 100% certain that there will be issues with this "dream team" that CJ will have to mediate and/or decide on...

Pretty easy really.   If it has to do with personnel, side with Douglas.  if it has to deal with the team on the field, or discipline of players , Gase.

Only gray area is if Gase doesn't want to coach a guy at all, guys gone.

As far as CJ evolving in a football genius goes, rocket league ball GIF

Know little about the guy, but generally speaking the Ravens guys have been pretty well regarded.

Although between this hire and the report on a Savage hire, it's seeming more likely that any plans for Champ Kelly may have fell through.

Nice to see we have contingency plans and have been able to execute them quickly.  Whether people are pro, con or neutral on Douglas at this stage, it seems pretty clear at bare minimum that he's pretty well connected in league circles.

He's definitely a dolt and always has been, but at least there seem to be some adults in the room now after the dust has cleared.  The less CJ is involved, the better.  Let the bickering be handled by the adults.

Owners write checks, front offices run football teams.  This especially needs to be true when the owner has no idea how to run things.  Keep CJ on his yacht banging Russian hookers.  Keep Woody in London for as long as possible.  Let Douglas and Gase run things and see what happens.

Yep.  At this stage, I don't want to hear from CJ nor Woody again until the next time (hopefully never) we're looking for someone to be fired.

I see your point.  However he has chosen to put himself right in the middle of football operations by having his GM and HC report directly to him as equals.  So he has to manage all the egos in the room and make smart football decisions when there are conflicts...

I wish I shared your optimism.  Let's see what happens when Gase gets a boner for a FA and Douglas loses him to another team...
