Is it too Early for Jets to Start Worrying About Abysmal Performance From High Priced O-Lineman?

Yes, the NFL season is a long 17 games with its share of ups and downs for just about every team, player and coach.  That’s why it’s almost never a good idea to get too high or too low after just one game.  Almost never.

For the Jets, there had to be at least a handful of folks at 1 Jets drive who worried about what they saw in week 1 from Laken Tomlinson.  The left guard who was brought in to solidify the offensive line after an outstanding career with the 49ers was, and there’s no other way to say it…abysmal.  Well, there are a few other words, but none of them suitable for this space.

If Jets didn’t know any better, they may have thought the team retained the departed Greg Van Roten and moved him to the left side.  When all was said and done, Tomlinson allowed a whopping EIGHT quarterback pressures en route to a PFF grade of 35.2.  It was Tomlinson’s worst grade since his 35.2 back in 2019.

Laken Tomlinson's week 1 PFF grade of 38.6 is his worst since week 11 of the 2019 season when he earned a 35.2. Somewhat alarming for a proven veteran who is familiar with the system the Jets are running.

It showed up on film time and again.  One play after another, be it run or pass, Tomlinson was repeatedly manhandled.  Whether it was a defender blowing past him right off the snap, putting him on skates with a bull rush, or just brushing him aside when Tomlinson was able to engage.

The Jets will hope like crazy that this was an opening day aberration for Tomlinson and he’ll return to form in week two.  But if you watched every Tomlinson snap from week 1, nobody could blame you for being at least a little bit concerned.

Way too early.  I was pissed at the oline too but we have to give them some time to gel.  Plus injuries and flipping guys around didn’t help.  Plus going against that Ravens pass rush didn’t help either

Let's face it.  The NFL is  shell of what it use to be.   It's pretty sh*tty entertainment with stupid rules/penalties that decide games more than talent.

Way too early. also Fant was screwed by shifting back to LT last min following Duan Brown’s shoulder injury. Give them some time to gel, actually just enough time until Zack is back

It's too early. I think they'll improve each week but I don't see this lineup being a top 10 unit. Also Elijah Moore blocked better than Conklin this week. If they want to run two TE sets, he needs to get way better.

I think the interior line is now worse than it was at end of last season and I would not be surprised if he gets pulled within next few games (or gets "injured") and those assholes on that "One Jets Drive" videos or picked him over the other choices better pack their bags too.

It's too late to start worrying about whether it's too early to start worrying.

Pretty much all OLs suck at the beginning of the season due to the CBA restrictions for practice time etc.

But nothing should be "too soon to worry" with the good old NYJ, until they change that narrative by consistently winning.

There is much more to OL play than meets the eye. These guys have to build the OL as a unit and that takes a little time. If this is happening after game 4 I would start to worry. FWIW they did play better after that first quarter and most of what happened after that was Joe holding the damn football too long when he needed to be getting it out quick. 

Flacco did not have a good feel for this game or his own team, he was terrible and some plays were just well beyond his ability. He's always been immobile and that's one of the reasons he was pushed aside by the Ravens.

His play action handoff with no one in the backfield was hilarious WTF was that all about.

It wasnt just 1 week - they were getting beat in preseason by the other team's #2s

Not to worried. I believe things will start get better as they get used to playing with one another. Takes time but Laken is better than that and that was a piss poor performance.
