Pennington could barely spoon food into his mouth at that point & they spent more time with Cutler than they did with any other prospect. Also, we were even having discussions to move up to #2 for Reggie Bush as late as draft day. Absolutely no one knew what the Jets' intentions were. bitonti
Sorry FT, but if McFadden is drafted by the Jets my "toon" will only change in one way. I will no longer think that Tannenbaum is a draft genius. That is the only thing that will be changing in my head. The Jets would be making a big, big mistake. if the Jets take DMC it will be a miracle of good luck. Even if DMC doesn't pan out they have to at least try. 11 minute drives that end in a field goal don't exactly cut it.
BleedinGreenNC
Yeah but we run the 3-4 and OLB's are the ones who pressure the QB, we dont run a 4-3 where DE's like Taylor, Freeney, Osi, and John Abe can all get to the QB. I really cant name one 3-4 DE that gets over 10 sacks per year So do you think that Gholston is worth it? Or should we look at Harvey?
DieHardJetsFan
So do you think that Gholston is worth it? Or should we look at Harvey? Yeah because Gholston could make a Merriman/Ware type of 3-4 OLB

Jedi_Jet1121
I would think he is in the trading block. I dont think the Jets woul have two starters in there team. Iceman88
So for those who like to claim that McFadden is strong even though his legs are the size of twigs and claim he has upperbody strength check out his workout numbers. From ESPN's report on McFaddens pro day... McFadden did, however, fill in the blanks in the short shuttle (4.05), three-cone drill (6.90) and bench press (13). http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft08/insider/columns/story?columnist=mcshay_todd&id=3311410 Yeah he's strong as hell. I will admit the short shuttle time is pretty damn legit though.

He's on the team. Because he protects the QB and he is good for 1000 yards a season. He can pound the rock. Someone would throw a 3rd round for Jones. Lions need a RB since Kevin Jones been released so why not them
Sperm Edwards
"the average reps for backs at the combine this year was 21 and several people recently witnessed McFadden put up 20 reps recently." WE paid a 3rd rounder a year earlier, coming off a (statistically) solid season when he was 28. So with him turning 30 at the end of August, coming off a crap season, someone's now going to give us the same thing we paid? And 1000 yards sucks unless he's carrying the ball only 200-225x. Sperm Edwards
Hm last time i remember were the team that gave up a 2nd rounder to get Jones...... Then your memory is lousy. We swapped 2rd round picks; we didn't trade ours away with only Jones as the compensation. Dropping from #37 or wherever we were down to #63 is the value of a high 3rd round pick. If the trade was purely a 2nd rounder to Chicago for Jones, we wouldn't have received their 2nd rounder in addition to Jones. You think he has the same value as when we traded for him? At the time, I remember reading delusional people here posting that he was a top-10 RB. Even if they were correct, how many people think Thomas Jones is a top-10 RB now; a year older and coming off a down season? Enough people that there is no shortage of fans that think we'll draft a RB in round 1 this year.

Sperm Edwards
I never said that sperm, not do I use it in any argument i've made about McFadden. His accomplishments stand on their own. lol - I'm messing with you. I just don't like drafting a RB with such a high pick at all. Has nothing to do with any "hatred" for McFadden, who is clearly talented. Simply, I don't think a RB is worth mega cap space. I'd rather dump that into the lines (which we've done) & defense and QB (if he's worth the money, unlike Chad). RB to me - if your line is that good, you just need someone with a little power who has some speed (or a trio of specialists) & your running game can be quite tough to stop. That, and I don't think these draftnicks know half as much as they think they do. What is it, like 50% of first round picks are still busts? I bet Chicago would like their Cedric Benson pick back from '05 & would be happy with a RB over 100 picks later like Barber or Jacobs. But they didn't have Benson's "elite" status on draft day. Bad character, possibly stupid, weak bench press at his pro day (and upper body strength is supposedly where he's strongest), runs upright, didn't show tackle-breaking ability against college-level defenders, and one of the NCAA's great fumblers. This kid may very well go onto the HOF someday. But that's a lot of baggage for the 6th overall pick who you're going to give a $20M lump of money to before his 21st birthday & throw him into the Manhattan night scene. I see all your points and as usual they are coherent unlike most of the people around here who are against drafting McFadden. My only argument is that I feel that the Jets just don't have that major gamebreaking player on their offense that they will need to get to the next level and McFadden has a CHANCE to be that kind of player. There is no one else in this draft that does. Thats why I feel this is a chance worth taking.

There is no one else in this draft that does. Thats why I feel this is a chance worth taking. See this is where I disagree with all the "men" who gush at McFadden's talent. You have no way of knowing if this is true. On draft day, no one thought Willie Parker was a gamebreaking player & so not one team felt he was even worth a 7th round pick. Put him behind a (previously) strong Pittsburgh OL, and he was racking up yards in 20+ yard clumps. Reggie Bush, while a totally different type of runner, was clearly thought to be a "gamebreaker" at the time. Meanwhile because of something stupid like height dropped Jones-Drew from a top-15 prospect to the end of the second round. I would definitely classify him as a "gamebreaker" for Jax. Same with Brian Westbrook at the end of round 3 when Willis McGahee was the top RB taken. Westbrook is clearly the more "gamebreaking" player. You simply don't know these things until after the draft. An next year or the year after, there will be yet another RB who people will call as a sure-fire HOF'er. Man, our own Thomas Jones was drafted like 7th in the country and he was not at considered a reach when Arizona took him that high. In 3 years we may find that the biggest gamebreaker from this draft was Mendenhall...or Jamaal Charles or Chad Simpson for all anyone knows. The whole "you gotta take a shot on him if he's there" makes me cringe. I'd agree with that if it's a QB. But a RB with so many red flags? If they like him, fine - draft him. But if they interviewed & tested him for hours & he came across as a ****y, stupid jackoff, they should pass on him & not worry about what people will say. Just like the Texans passing on Bush - they were killed for it back then, but now it's looked at as one of the smartest moves, made even smarter because of the public opinion at the time to the contrary. Sperm Edwards
Neither you nor I know how their meeting with him went or what they really think of him... No we don't. But if they don't meet with him a couple of times, then they're not keeping their options open. Someone this productive in college, this highly-touted, and who may be there at #6; you have to really find out if you like him. Work him out; talk to him; try to throw gameplan stuff at him; all of the above.
